Adblue - what a major pain in the backside this stuff is. We took delivery of a brand new moho last November and it's the first vehicle I've had which is equipped with an adblue system.

So far we're only getting @ 1500 miles between the adblue light coming on. Our Fiat Ducato base has no gauge, just a light. The price of adblue seems to have doubled in recent days, I've just paid £20 for 10 litres, I can't find any of those £1 a litre deals.
A local garage has adblue pumps, £1.79 a litre, but the diesel there is not cheap, so do I drive from one fuel station to another? :)

Another absolute PITA is the addition of an adblue tank to the vehicle has reduced diesel capacity to 60 litres, meaning a fuel range of under 250 miles, a pita on long journeys.

Talking to friends who have cars with adblue, they're saying the never have to top it up. One handbook I've seen says the adblue is topped up at the annual service. Why am I having to top up on journeys?

What's your experience folks, how many miles are you doing between adblue top ups?

Mike

I thought the Fiat tanks were 19 litres? Or are there different sizes for different models? 🤷‍♂️

When my light came on (by then it was too late!), I put in 14 litres and still needed to be piggy backed to our local Fiat garage for the system to be reset.

Yep, I did follow the correct procedures as per the manual. (y)
I was told the tank is 17 or 19 litres!!

We have done a lot of miles for a 2020 MH (12000)

Recent trip to France was returning about 25mpg but put our foot down a little at times. Last weekends trip towing a very light training keeping around 60mph got 27mpg!

I’m hoping the mpg will increase now the engine is/should be well worn in!!

I’m not as confident adblue will increase. I need to chase my Fiat dealer as he was meant to email me a report so I can complain to Fiat!!

My PVC is a 2020 Peugeot 2.2, manual gearbox, 140 bhp, fully loaded weight is approx 3620kg. Averaging 3.41 litres adblue per 1000 miles over the last 4500 miles. Trip computer says average fuel consumption is 28.5 mpg.

My PVC 2020 Fiat 140bhp, manual gearbox, plated for 3500kgs, but not reaching that weight when fully loaded for touring. Probably near 3300kgs.

My Adblue consumption is about the same as yours, we’ve 7500 miles on the clock and averaging 31 mpg. (y)

Our van is plated at 4500 kg - miles at 4700 hope the engine is still loosening up and the mpg goes up a bit.

We do have a lot of clutter on the roof that will adversely affect mpg.
Wifi antenna, max fan, 2x 175w solar, midi heck, mini heck and roof rails.

I’m putting in between 3 and 3.5 litres per 1000 miles. (y)
It looks like you are doing better than us then. Since the next trip will be a long drive, decided to fill up last weekend whilst at a garage with a pump. We had done 1,305 miles since we collected our MH (coachbuild Fiat 140 auto) when the dealer filled the AdBlue tank up, and it took 6.34 litres. I *guess* that will put us in their estimated 2-3,000 miles per tank (judging by the tank size estimates above) range then.

You we’re lucky if the dealer filled the Adblue tank up, ours hadn’t, which ended up causing us a load of hassle……but that’s another story.

Now you know it’s full you’ll be able to judge better how much you’re using. We always carry a 5 litre container now. (y)

I have been watching this thread, and keeping an eye on my Adblue usage.
30/9/21 at 2165 miles from new 10lts added, I had previously filled the Adblue but had not kept a record.
5/3/22 at 3600 miles 9 lts
20/6/22 at 4980 miles 8.5 lts
so I reckon I am getting between 158 to 162 miles per litre of Adblue
this time I stopped at the first services after the light came on, which is a lot easier using the pump than lifting a 10 litre container and have it run down the side of the van when full.

So diesel cost works out to be ~30p per mile. Adblue is an additional ~1p per mile. Small, but not insignificant.

Has anyone noticed anymore issues with adblue?

I feel we are still using a lot and the warning light has come on more frequently during our trip to France but still fits in the normal range of Fiats estimations ie between 3 and 7 litres per 1000km this is very high compared to other makes of vans.

A merc van driver has told me he gets 4000 miles from his adblue- I’m not sure on his tank size though but still seems alot higher.

Maybe it’s just the over active warning system ??

How come the warning light comes on frequently? Surely once it comes on, you fill the tank and you are good for another 3,000 miles.

You’ll find loads of posts on various forums of people deleting the ad blue systems as they are too problematic and considered not fit for purpose.

The EU have created a serious problem in enforcing software that disables the vehicle from running if the ad blue system is not functioning correctly.
This coupled with lack of availability of replacement parts and what appears to be a weakness in the operability of the system so creating an increasing backlash from people.

I’m amazed the media haven’t picked up on this and run with it.

A very costly white elephant.

Not a white elephant, mostly down to user error from what I've seen.

Read up on it a bit more then.

Mostly instrument and software failures than to do with running tank level low.

Had two conversations with separate people recently.

One an independent Mercedes’ specialist who stated system not fit for purpose. Too many issues with pumps and NOX sensors

Similar comments with a van delivery person from a major supermarket. Always breaking down down to instruments failing.

Nothing to do with drivers error.

It’s a massive cash cow for the manufacturers.

10 ltrs every 1,000 miles 18 mpg Iveco 3.0 auto 205hp had it checked at Iveco they said ok! Blow that putting £30 worth distilled water and urea in every 1,000 miles for no reason🙁

That’s ridiculous usage rate 😳😳

Mine came up to refill on way back from collecting it from dealer.

Topped up and it took 10 litres. Checked in manual and it says 15 litre tank should last 7500 miles ish. 1st warning comes on with 1500mikes left, roughly.

Be interesting to see when warning to fill up comes on again.

Ours is 19ltrs so less than 2k miles the adblue might have to go 🤣

Our VW T6.1 Transporter registered 16,000 miles on adblue when we bought it last November, we’ve now done just under 3,000 miles in it and it’s still reading 15,000. I don’t know the adblue tank capacity though.

2022 X Demo 2.2 Euro 6 + 9 Speed Auto, registered and collected Jan 9th so so 4 months old, just covered nearly 1500 miles since, adBlue light just came on showing half full on gauge, so looking approx 3k on a tank !
Added approx 8 litres of a 10 litre drum which I buy from Euro Car Parts when on special offer @ £22.99 x 20 ltrs. Fill on drive easy enough, takes 10 mins with checking guage when showing full.
I can live with the adBlue usage but I am concerned about oil usage on a new engine @ half a litre every 600+miles, this is going to be expensive @ £15+Vat x 1 litre Petronas. I have just added 1x litre as well as adblue. Is this all Euro 6 2.2's as I have read this is normal 🙈 Has anyone taken this up with Fiat, and asked why is this normal, think they should supply the oil, as cost wise is £60 for 5 litres (Online) every 6k miles.

My VW Golf is very frugal with the Adblue whilst Chris Skoda with the same engine gulps it down, crazy.

My 2017 Elddis on Peugeot base and 2.0lit engine has 15lit adblue tank and has done about 600m/lit fairly consistently since new. First warning's apparently at 1500 miles/4lit (?), so should be about 6600m range on a tank. After reading this thread I'm now worried it's not using enough...

Our previous motorhome (Peugeot 2.0L) used considerably less than our current Fiat.

1500 miles is about £400 in diesel at the current prices. So adblue is costing a few percent on top.

I'm pretty sure there are still 90 litre tanks available for the Ducato. The issue is often that motorhome convertors use a 60 litre tank to try to keep the vehicle under 3.5t.
You may find that indeed the capacity on the Fiat Ducato based M/H is 60 litres BUT the physical tank will hold 90. There is a mod than can be done to the float etc bit that sits in the tank. Cant give you the technical details as I got someone more knowledgable about these things to do mine. Have a search on line.
