A photo of the day thread

I probably should know where this is, but I don’t. Who’s the geezer on the ‘oss? I’m assuming he died in battle as the horses front legs are both in the air.
I’m also of the understanding that both front legs in the air the rider died in battle, one front leg in the air the the rider died as a result of wounds acquired in battle. Both front legs on the ground the rider died of other causes. Can anyone confirm or deny this please?

PS it could be the Black Prince statue in Leeds.

I think there was an episode of QI where Allan Davies espoused this scenario, but it was roundly pulled to bits by the "QI Elves" as just a myth ?

Wildbill Bill thank you for sharing the photos of you and the cadets, what a nice idea to dress down and let the youngsters shine, you did look very smart though.

Eugene of Savoy

  • CountryAustria
  • Town:Vienna
  • Year of creation:1865
  • Rider(s):Eugene of Savoy
(1663–1736), one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history, rose to the highest offices of state at the imperial court in Vienna. Born in Paris to aristocratic Italian parents, Eugene grew up around the French court of King Louis XIV, who rejected him for service in the French army. Eugene moved to Austria and transferred his loyalty to the Habsburg Monarchy. He secured his European-wide fame with a decisive victory against the Ottomans at the Battle of Zenta in 1697. Not only did he break the westward thrust of the Ottomans, liberating central Europe after a century and a half of Turkish occupation, but he also helped to save the Habsburg Empire from French conquest.

It’s the same on my iPad. There are days when it’s at its normal performance and then days when I have to close and try to reopen. It’s like the server has slowed down for some reason 🤷🏼‍♂️❤️❤️

It’s the whitebaiting season in NZ. Hours and hours are spent wading in icy cold rivers to catch these tiny fish that are considered a delicacy when made into fritters. Whitebait sells for about 40 pounds per kilo. Not to me it doesn’t.
I prefer to spend the time watching the birds, including Royal Spoonbills and Shags (cormorants).

One of the ugliest ships that I have seen....
Virgin Voyages cruise liner.
What you can’t see clearly from the photo is the amount of smoke coming from the funnel. It is whitish in colour so perhaps not as environmentally damaging as the sooty black normally emitted by some.
