A photo of the day thread

Not being able to obtain new supplies and only having “scrap ends” of wood left in my workshop I decided to use them up making planters for the garden.

At the back of the workshop I found an old cart wheel that we had bought at a Brocante in La Clayette, France, a few years ago. A quick clean up, leaving it distressed, and it makes a garden ornament and leaves additional space in the workshop. Win, win!

Are you going to have a go at re-caning the seat?

We had a similar chair to yours about 10 years ago and bought a kit that included instructions. Bit daunting initially but stuck to it and have done quite a few since.

This is one of our later chairs, bought as part of a job lot from an auction room for £1. Scraped back with a penknife, wirewooled and waxed.

I didn’t realise kits were available for re-caning ? Thanks for the heads up.
Still at the stage of applying paint stripper but it’s going to take a long while with all the various shoulders etc to clean up.
Unfortunately I’ve had to order the steel wool online which is a pain ☹️

That is a beautiful old chair and you have done an excellent job of restoring it. Well done. I’ll give you £2 for it.

Be aware that there are two ways to re-cane seats....

The modern way is to buy a sheet of ready woven cane and fit that to the chair....

The traditional way is to buy the bundles of pre split cane and weave it yourself.

Cant quite make out on your image but it looks like it is the traditional with pre-drilled holes on the frame of the seat at about 1cm centres.

There are videos on YouTube to give you some idea what is involved. Really Really satisfying when you finish.

Good Luck

Barry

Bought this probably about 14 years ago at an auction ? ever since it’s been on the “to do” list whilst in the shed.
Today I’ve separated all the joints luckily the old wood glue softened up with a bit of water so no damage done.
Probably take a lot longer to strip the gold paint off after all the joints have been cleaned up.View attachment 388038View attachment 388039
I find it’s so much easier to slide into the general black bin when stuff is broken down into small pieces, the bin men don’t really notice they are removing furniture that way. I see you follow the same plan!!

Well done Davy, taken between Glengoyne and Blanefield along the old railway line.
It's an area I love and miss very much, spent countless Sundays fishing for pike on Loch Lomond at Balmaha. Been here in Wales for over 18 years, it's nice but it's not Scotland :whistle2:

Derbyshire Police have reported that at 11am today (13th May) they have arrested a male for shooting the 2 Swans and 4 ducks at Turnerwood (the pound the swans lived in is called that) on the Chesterfield Canal at Hollingwood, Chesterfield
A final note. - Quote from the Swan rescue centre
On the right is the swan “Stocky” from Turnerwood, who was recently found shot with an air rifle.

On the left is a female swan - who came here covered in oil - who has taken quite a shine to him. They have their own honeymoon suite here at the sanctuary, including their own pond, and spend all day following one another around.

It is hoped they will bond whilst in our care, and can be released together when the time comes.

Our new gazebo without the canopy. There is a vine behind that should grow to create the canopy and currently being trained and nearly reached it. So come late August we should be sitting under grapesView attachment 388841
