Billy the motorhome settled for the night. A great overnight layby just two miles north of Shap. Mind you we haven't seen much sunshine since getting to the west coast of Scotland.

Ask a local why they call it Shap and they'll tell you that they couldn't decide whether to call it $hit or Crap. :)

I spoke to a local who said exactly that. Although they did point out the chippy there is very good.

Shap chippy is indeed very good. If we're heading north on the M6 on our way home, we come off at jct 39 and it's 5 minutes to the chippy, another 5 minutes further on is a layby to eat them, with views across the fells, and if you stay on the A6, you can rejoin the M6 at jct 40 at Penrith. There's a couple of small sites in Shap, and of course the layby, but it is one long village if you want to have a stroll in to the pubs.
When we travel back north, if the weather is indifferent, you can guarantee the rain will start as you climb Shap Fell.

Today at Goodwood Revival. I'm not showing the side view as we've just driven out of the campsite which is knee deep in mud. Pitched up next to Austrians who have put up a party tent to service their individual tents. Guesss which side they put their very noisy generator! At 4 am we had had enough when eventually it ran out of fuel but after a brief moment of peace they had refilled and restarted it. We had to go and have words. It was then we found out the music was still on too!

Todays trip.
Portscatho, then to a mill between visiting Carne beach.

Wow, Melinsey's changed a bit since I used to live just up the road! Used to take the horses down that road or onto Carne Beach, or out around Portscatho, almost every day before work (even in the dark in winter). Not sure that Carne beach even belonged to the NT then...

For many years, we kept our boat on the Percuil so know the area well. Melinsey is quite a hidden gem. Very narrow for a motor home but is do-able. expect to get your roof brushed though! ( Carne could be a sneaky stop over in the NT car park.)
