First introduction to moving water
After shooting the rapids a wee play in a friendly stopper

Fantastic view!
Is that a miniature table and chair set - or large teddies? :D
A bit of both really. They were placed to advertise the bar at the midway point of the chair lifts.

Skye Highland Games

We had a lovely sunny day, all day today! Massive crowds, incredibly good sport. The competitions are run on a traditional basis - for example, the high jump is done 'grass-to-grass' (ie with no landing mats) and the only accepted technique is scissors - no 'Fosbury Flop' allowed here!

Have you watched a traditional Throwing the Hammer contest as done in Highland Games? The competitors stand still, swing the hammer (a 22lb ball on the end of a 4 foot shaft) and throw it over their shoulder as far as they can. Ever wondered how they maintain their stability with all that force going on? Here's the trick: they anchor themselves to the ground with a pair of evil-looking blades attached to the soles of their shoes!

Heavy Field events

Consists of a lot of big men throwing heavy stuff around - Hammer, ball-and-chain, stone...

... and this one, a 56lb / 4 stone weight, from a stand, one-handed, vertically over a bar. Today they got to FIFTEEN FEET!!!!! How high does 15 feet look? - this high!

and this is the World Champion from Poland (came second today) you can just see the weight at the level of the bar

Tossing the Caber

The Caber at 22 feet is a mighty piece of wood.

How many stewards does it take to carry a caber to the thrower? - this many:

then the competitor steadies it ready to pick it up

balances himself with the caber

runs a few steps and aims to throw it end-over-end

The first caber used today defeated all-comers, it was so heavy (remember these guys were professional international competitors); so a second one was brought out.

I had a great day!

One of my special memories is of a weekend spent at Balmoral, with the Queen in attendance yet all so relaxed, so I could immerse myself in your picture, looked as if you had a really good day.

Stunning Photos! And what a lovely setting and weather. We saw one at Killin a few years back but it was grey and wet but still enjoyable to watch.
