A photo of the day thread

Thursday's stopover was Uphill Marina near Weston Super Mare. Not cheap @£25 a night but very picturesque :)

No, I don't have a camera drone - there's a very big hill with a church on top that I went to explore :)
Try the Italian restaurant by the pub just opposite, had a fantastic meal there last year!

County Durham at the weekend .....

Loch Venachar near Callander, Scotland... using one of the new Loch Lomond & The Trossochs National Park wild camping permits for the first time. If you can get one, great idea - you can wild camp and you know you've got a guaranteed spot. All motorhome slots were booked this weekend in this area of the Park but we were the only motorhome we saw... what a waste. It was 19deg and no wind - perfect for cycling along NCR7 where this picture was snapped.

Incidentally, for anyone who still worries about wild camping in Scotland - the National Park web site actually states it's OK to wild camp in a motorhome anywhere in the Park (but in a "camping management zone" you need a permit - basically alongside any major rode or the banks of Loch Lomond). There's still a vast un-managed area of the Park to explorer.

And this is what awaits if you manage to buy a permit in one of the camping management zones.

And this is what awaits if you manage to buy a permit in one of the camping management zones.

I see the permits are £3 a night, it looks like they need to put the price up a bit to ensure those who book them actually turn up!
The map on this page shows the motorhome areas - which are over quite a wide area, not just Loch Lomond. I bet there are some cracking spots amongst them. Looks like an opportunity for someone to go round and photograph and report on them all. :) http://www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/things-to-do/camping/get-a-permit/

There was a lot of opposition to the creation of the zones as wild camping here is very popular - putting the price up just makes it look like a very big camp site. However one issue I've fed back is that you can't obviously "return" a permit if you're not going to use it. Also, allowing booking up to two months in advance increases the risk that people subsequently have other plans. My suggestion was that they make it easy/obvious how you cancel your permit, and offer a refund if you do (up to x period before it's due) - and also reduce that two months substantially.

@Nigel L

Where are you parked for the night, I love coastal views!
Hi Cliffdale, it was Exmouth sea front (Queens drive).
Very busy over the weekend, as you would expect, but after all the day trippers had gone home, was very quiet, and with the roof vents open, just the sound of the sea/waves crashing against the beach. Dosen't get much better:)
Think we are going to stay again tonight.

Had a few days at this lovely Rustic Camp site on the river where you are allowed a fire if you want, they have no Elsan but toilets 24/7. £7 a night Tues/Thursday.

We packed up the 'van yesterday then found we'd got a flat tyre.

We had to unpack the kettle and wait for the very nice RAC man to come and help us. Tough life, innit? :-)

What you having made? (and don't say uke!) tell me the specifics, down to the last drop of mother of pearl!
Hand made mahogany soprano uke based on the one Cliff Edwards played - it's called an Ike after him. I've decided on rope binding instead of mother of pearl as I think it suits the uke better, but I'm having a fancy pattern around the sound hole. Liam, my funny little Luthier is going to use my uke as his first attempt at putting his 'marque' on the top of the fret board (very brave of me I think, but I will be the 'first' to have it done, thereby making it worth more when it comes on the Antiques Roadshow in 100 years time...) I'm having koa knobs and not sure of the strings yet - Acquila or Worth. Mother of Pearl fret spots on the neck though.

Basically I have a beautiful Ashbury tenor that sounds more like a guitar, and I was sitting near Alec, our uke jam leader and I overheard his - sounding absolutely beautiful, very round, sweet, old-fashioned and loud. He let me play it one night, and it resonated through me,and I fell in love!

Not that I'm totally besotted mind you - and it will probably sound crap with me playing it, but there ain't no pockets in a shroud.....

Not toooooo excited! If we hadn't joined MHF, gone to @haganap 's Bring and Buy meet three years ago, and met the Legends that are @Janine and Barrie, :notworthy2::notworthy2:I would not be half as happy as I am now....! :D

Fantastic, it's always nice having an instrument made for you, I am sure the pleasure it brings will more than compensate for any cost, enjoy(y)

Wow, Just listened to a wunderkammer Ike soprano on YouTube, what a fantastic sound, loud, full of sustain and sweet as a nut, well done.
