A photo of the day thread

Well the Cardiff tourist ‘social’ season is just about over for 2016, so I will try to feed you a little of Cardiff’s lesser known history. Much is rooted in the Industrial Revolution era but some is more modern.

Cardiff Docks has a great history, in modern times commercially it is much less busy than in the past, but the commercial area still handles cargoes of scrap steel, milled and rolled steel, oil and gas, a small container dock and this year Cardiff has attracted a number of smaller cruise ships which is another area that Cardiff is keen to develop. From my sofa I can watch these shipping movements. The commercial dock links to the tourist dock and some historical docks through a couple of narrow channels that are wide enough to admit quite large vessels so we get to see many visiting warships, regularly Tall Ships pass through for a visit and to make crew exchanges and the rare visit of some billionaire’s luxury yacht.

At last year’s NATO Conference the Roath Basin was packed with warships from many nations.

Separated from this are many pleasure craft marinas who have their own lock gates to access the sea.

Here is what is locally known as the Scott Harbour;

This comes as Captain Scott's ship,, used to sail down to the Antartic for his ill fated expedition to the South Pole, provisioned and fuelled at this dock before the journey south. Scott honoured Cardiff as his departure point because of the immense amount of funds and goods raised in the area, without which the expedition may well have not taken place.

Scott sails. Penarth church on the headland and the way to sea open as this was long before the Cardiff Bay Barrage had been built!

There are more memorials to Scott in the Bay;

There are othe memorials to Scott around Cardiff, possible the prettiest is in the Roath Park Lake, the Scott Memorial;

Personally I feel an affinity to the Scott Expedition and Motorhome travels, I feel it would make a great Bumper Sticker.

According to Scott's diary, before Titus Oates exited the tent and walked to his death, he uttered the words;

"I am just going outside and may be some time."

Sort of summs up my trips :)

Thank you Anthea.

When I left London and moved to the Brecon Beacons area I never believed that I could live in a city again. That was until I discovered Cardiff and especially Cardiff Bay.

Here it is like living in a small village and has both the benefits and good points of both a village and a city. Withing 10 minutes I can be cycling along the Coastal Path, through the countryside, visiting a multiplex cinema, a choice of theatres and concert halls, swimming in an Olympic sized pool, gliding (on my face mostly) on an ice rink, white water canoeing, horse riding and a wide choice of restaurants covering just about any cuisine you can think imagine.

I know all my neighbours, every morning as I take my five minute walk to the coffee shop I am met and greeted by many local people and office workers. In the coffee shop, everyone knows everybody, if you're going on holiday you must remember to let the staff know! Two days abscence without notice, you'll be listed as missing and people will be contacting you to check that all is well! Even in Tescos if you are short of cash you'll be put 'on the slate' and you can pay when you next visit. To balance the till the staff settle your bill from their 'tip' box!

Wow that sounds just like village life from old. I think sheffield is trying this too but so many of the apartments in the centre are buy to let or student so very transient. Having the wharfs must make a difference ,keep enjoying !

My brothers NorVin"on it's maiden run. He's built it from a Vincent engine that was a box of bits and a Norton Featherbed frame. He's made it electric starter, 12V, dual twin leading shoe Fontani front brake, Triumph conical hub rear, modified swinging arm to take a wider tyre. He's done all the machining, made the seat and painted it. I wish I was half the engineer he is. It's taken him 6 years to complete it.

You are never to old to learn and today I learned something about slime moulds. Here is a slime mould photographed today in a local wood. It caught my eye because it was a bright canary yellow.

Now I would have thought it was something like a funghi, a single organism, but it isn't. These slime moulds* are made up of individual amoeba like organisms which wander about at a gentle pace - (up to 1mm an hour apparently) but at times they come together and start producing fruiting bodies which are each about pinhead size. You can just about see these in the picture.

I haven't really identified this one - there are several yellow slime moulds including one with the name of "dog vomit slime mould". :)

*Yes, they really are called slime moulds! :)
