50mph on the motorway.

""My works transit will happily do 80mph fully loaded so why so slow?"" - And that is safe i who's eye's ? I understood non car based vans eg transits are supposed to be 60mph ? Maybe the people are driving at what they consider to be a safe speed?
70 on motorways.

Probably because the driver is not used to the size of the vehicle, it takes a while to get a feel for where your corners are.
My good lady loves driving ours.
Cruise control, 65mph around 500-600 mile range on a tank of juice.

Same reason as my Dad, now in his 80's drives like a snail everywhere. Nothing to do and all day to do it.
He forgets when he was working and travelled 100 mile round trip most days at warp speed. Now everyone is in a hurry, according to him and drives like a loon. Just like he used to, he never admits it though.
I find it even worse on A roads when some MH drivers thing their MH's wont go round a corner without toppling over. Especially if I'm working and need to be somewhere for a certain time.

I try and stick to 60-65 on the motorway to keep out of the way of trucks and not cause a convoy behind us.
I don’t think 50 on the autobahns would be too popular. I find trucks seem to get very close before pulling past.

That's fine on some dual carriageways, not so good when it's the only way north from the biggest container port in Europe (was), someone dawdling at 50mph forces the artics into lane 2. It is frustrating for me, and my truck doesn't do fast.
You mean you can’t pull the fuse, haha

I don’t mind that they are doing 50 so much, it’s when they speed up when I get along side and can’t go any faster as am already on the limiter.
What he said except my limiter is set higher!!

Had a middle lane « 70 is plenty » road warrior do it to me three times on M5 yesterday.

I think a lot of people cant even drive cars safely so god help us if you give them something any bigger, last weekend on the way home I was in the middle Lane at 70 and the old guy in the inside Lane decided to pull out for no reason at 38😳😳

Running in was when engine machining was pretty basic so stuff had to wear to fit basically. With todays tech and ultra fine machining its not really needed

Actually with modern engines, the best running in is (and it has to be done in the first 20 miles or so or it won't work), completely ragging it flat out. Best technique is to put in in 3rd at slow speed and floor it to the red-line and then decellerate to low revs and repeat three times. This will result in the piston rings bedding in properly. After that, revert to normal reduced low revs for the next 500 miles.

Of course, manufacturers could never advise you to do such a thing, as the unusual speed profile would be somewhat suspicious (and, in fact, downright illegal) on public roads. However, you'll end up with an engine with half the oil consumption and get a good 1-2mpg better over the lifetime of the vehicle.

🤪if you’re choosing 50mph cos you’re not in a hurry, choose the A roads and stop off at the interesting sights you’ll see more of.
Choosing a speed lower than the lorries with a capped mix speed creates sub optimal traffic conditions.
That’s true, I read it here

This moan is a non starter to me. So long as vehicles are doing AT LEAST 50mph on a motorway how can anyone complain? Safer, steadier, economic, easier control in wind, easier to avoid obstructions.... So what if other vehicles want to go 60, 65 or 70? I am bored of the nob heads that consider 80 to 90 the norm because "modern brakes are better" and other twoddle....

I latch onto the first lorry I come up upon. I follow this lorry until a lorry overtakes then I follow that one.
The idea is that I am following the fastest lorry on the motorway.

The principle behind this is that slipstreaming even from a safe distance increases your fuel economy, and as I am following the fastest lorry I am not slowing myself down too much whilst also avoiding drifting up in speed and breaking the 60mph speed limit.

A little more difficult in the uk but certainly on the continent I latch on to the fastest waggon in the group up to about 62-63 any faster than that I back off, put the cruise control on sit back and relax. ;)

The ones that really really pi$$ me off are the ones who think the middle lane at 60 miles an hour is a perfectly acceptable place to be even though there is a perfectly good inside lane with virtually nothing in it, and God knows there's enough of e'm.

sorry what does it matter what others prefer to travel at speeds PROVIDING they sit in the inside lane.

Life is about the journey NOT the destination, hence no real rush to get there.

No offense given just our point of view.

Our speed largely depends on the need/time constraints to be somewhere. These days unless a specific reason wander down the motorways at 56-60 mph. As over 3.5T quite happy to roll along at 50-60-70 mph when appropriate/needed.

Chill enjoy the fabulous UK countryside.
If you learnt to drive and successfully passed your test the following would have applied to making good progress.

What your examiner is looking for

The examiner is expecting you to

  1. Drive up to the speed limit if road, weather and traffic conditions permit or at a realistic speed if not
  2. Approach hazards at a safe controlled speed without being over cautious or interfering with the progress of other traffic
  3. Emerge from junctions without stopping at give way lines if it is safe to do so or emerge at the first safe opportunity to proceed.
Driving faults recorded
20 Progress

Appropriate speed:

  • Crawls along at slow speeds on clear roads.
  • Makes no attempt to achieve maximum speeds for the road when safe to do so.
  • Reduces speed excessively when the conditions do not merit doing so.
  • Makes slow progress through the gears in normal driving.
Undue hesitancy:

  • Makes unnecessary stops at junctions and other hazards.
  • Waits unnecessarily when it is safe to proceed at junctions.
  • Waits for green light at pedestrian crossings when clear on flashing amber.
  • Waits for other drivers, who are clearly giving way.

Dawdling on the inside lane on a motorway forces speed limit traffic that is making "good progress within the road or vehicle type limit" to move into the middle lane. In turn traffic is then forced into the outside lane and we end up with a long stream of vehicle in the outside lane. Lorries cannot move into the outside lane so get stuck in the middle lane causing even more congestion:

Slow moving vehicles such as mobile cranes have orange flashing lights on to warn vehicles behind they are slow moving.

If you can’t keep a reasonable speed on a motorway, quite simply, don’t use them.

Can't see why fuel economy comes into any discussion on this, our Renault master just does 35 mpg all the time, 80 on mways or trundling at 50 on byways , never varies , tried it time after time for thousands of miles.

A consistant 25mpg at a steady 50mph, sinking faster than the Titanic at 50+. Ducato, diesel, Adria Hi Roof Coral.

It is important to me as I live on a tight budget, every £10 saved is another day away.

I can get 22+ at 55 and 15 at 70. Sometimes not about fuel economy, it’s about going much longer between fill ups 😀

Love it.

65 mph is enough for my PVC. Noise alone is unacceptable above that and I don’t need to see the fuel gauge needle moving (enough of a shock putting I’ve £90 of fuel in on a 1/4 full tank as it is.

it can be an offence to go too slow if you are causing an obstruction

+1

I tend to cruise between 60-70 depending on what I'm feeling like that's genuine speed not Fiat speed. Being over 3.5t most countries I'm limited to 100 to 110kph anyway..
Cant see the point of worrying about fuel consumption after spending getting on gor 100k on a van.

Vans have the same speed limit on a motorway as a car, and 80 on the speedo is just over 70 actual speed, my last Transit would do much more if I let it.
