50mph on the motorway.

You won’t experience it as you are happy to be doing the slower speed. I get it all the time. Even my father does it. It’s an old person thing.
No it's a safe driver thing.Standard of driving on our roads now by private and professional drivers is pathetic. Most drivers need a foot each side of their vehicle to get through a gap.BUSBY.

My daughter had 10 lessons over three months and did just over a 1000 miles over the same three months in her own car as practice with me. She had complete control over her car, steep hill starts, reversing etc were no problem by the end. Passed first time too.
I never ever had a lesson.Just picked it up by listening and watching my dad. Was driving at ten on our very quiet unmade road.BUSBY.

50mph M4? If its between the M25 and Reading that'll be the speed limit while the roadworks are in progress.

I often see motorhomes around the country blasting through 50mph roadworks oblivious to speed limits? So it goes both ways doesn't it?
That’s my manor. Now 60mph Reading J12 to Slough (J6?). Then it’s a 50mph stretch.
Thursday we left at M25 junction (M4a?). So don’t know the end of cameras.
Not sure when the switch away from 50mph happened. I first noticed the uplift early June.

Any motorway where they have to impose artificial speed limits ,lower than the mway limit, is short of capacity.

Just done Thurso to N Wales in 2 hits and averaged 50mph over the 600 odd miles. Trundled along happily at 60 - 65 at 3000rpm for hours on end with enough left over to [slowly] get to 70+ to overtake a line or two of slower vehicles. The old Transit 2.5 diesel might sound like a can of washers being shaken, but it certainly delivers.

Brilliant engine,,BUSBY.

It always amuses me that people quote “professional drivers” who are far from the best drivers on our roads.

There are places with short slip roads , some on the A1 , the bypass around Peterborough has some.
You're not wrong there! I was hacking down the A1 the other week, cant exactly remember where, just north of Newark I think? Anyway, Shell garage on the southbound side with a slip road probably 50ft long? This VW Touran was sat on the exit at 90° then slowly moved onto the slip. I'm doing 56mph, lorries up me jacksy, no space in lane 2 then just as I get up near the garage matey decides he's going to go for it to join the A1......I couldn't brake cause ill cause a pile up behind me and I wouldn't be able to stop anyway, couldn't pull out cause there was no space so I had to just go for it and keep going.

Matey decides that he's coming out and i think he thinks I should stop for him. At the end of the slip road he's halfway down the nearside of my trailer, lorries behind me too and I ain't slowing down cause I can't. Rather than him slowing, he carries on, mounts the grass verge, dust everywhere and literally inches away from my trailer...."here we go" I'm thinking, dash cam at the ready?

Anyway, I've got past him, the lorry behind swerves out and nearly takes out a people carrier and the domino effect starts with trucks and cars swerving.

Just past Newark the traffic slows and matey and his wife in the VW come alongside me and start hollering abuse up at me for not stopping. What chance do we stand with ignorance like that?

Me too, one of my brothers went back up the road recently, he's a diabolical driver... but he's got the digi card and some other tickets...

I found myself in a similar position on the A38 a few days ago, some people have no idea what that dotted line means. I did have to brake when the idiot eventually overtook me and pulled in front to jam his brakes on. As you say. “What chance do we stand with ignorance like that?”

One thing I've noticed is how other drivers treat you based on what you drive.

I'm one of those that drives at 30 in a 30 because it's utterly pointless going any faster, there's that many traffic lights you're going nowhere

in the smart car I get people 6ft behind me, or in the OS mirror I see a headlight sticking out towards the centre of the road trying to bully me into going faster

In the Touareg nobody is anywhere near me even though I'm driving at the same speed and the same manner

Do you think it’ll make 300?

I wonder what the record is?
Much higher! Word Association is on 32268! And others may be higher……….but I’ll leave it to you to check that out ;)

Haha, I'll have to start a 'what dodgy thing did you see on the motorway today' thread, that would rack up a few thousand in no time I reckon 😁

Why does it amuse you? BUSBY.

No one seems to be asking anyone to break the speed limit, just go along with, or a little faster than the heavies, surely it's not a big ask?
It is for some on here. Probably the same ones that down weight their motorhome to 3.5 t because they wouldn’t pass the medical. They’re probably just about managing to keep driving legally. I do hope that when I am no longer capable I will have the sense to give up driving.

From my experience the worst drivers are taxi drivers. Shocking standards of road use. After that car drivers that have never taken any further driver training. Particularly the ones travelling ten miles per hour below the speed limit because they think that’s safer. Maybe for them as they’re not very good at driving but for more trained/ better educated drivers it’s an accident waiting to happen.

The one I hate is running out of time about 15 minutes from the yard and to be legal sitting there for 45 minutes unpaid twiddling my thumbs watching the clock and waiting to drive off. When I could of been home relaxing for the next day. Try not to get caught out but it has happened.

Wonder how you tell if someone has had extra driver training? Went on an advanced HGV driver training course many years ago and one driver who was useless at the start (do not know how he ever passed his test) was just as useless at the end..Cracking course though with brilliant skid pads..and we stayed in a 5 star hotel.BUSBY.

Firm I once worked for sent us on training etc. One thing was to learn how to tie a dolly, which we knew but none of the trucks had any ropes only straps. Seemed a pointless exercise.

Can't see why fuel economy comes into any discussion on this, our Renault master just does 35 mpg all the time, 80 on mways or trundling at 50 on byways , never varies , tried it time after time for thousands of miles.
Whilst I agree that may be your perception.
Myself and the laws of physics would have to disagree.

I'd like to see this doing more than 40 let alone 50 but he still seems to be able to trade

What is that, a VW touran , I'm sure that's insured for carrying goods with a tachograph fitted and not overloaded at all
