If there is a 30 speed limit painted on the road of a country lane twice, no more than 30 metres apart but halfway between them there is a small sign saying 20mph then approaching the 20mph sign what is the limit 30 or 20 ?
Asking for a friend

The council near us have put up 20 red ringed signs anywhere they fancy. Some have gateway signage some don’t. It’s a pain when you have to prove your innocence for their incompetence.

very true but in the uk it is the continual loss of points in addition to a fine that is the problem.here after 2 years they modified the laws so that you just pay a fine, reduced by 50% for being resident,
That’s fair. 🤔
Fine the visitor more than a local resident who should / would know better maybe being from that area.

If you tell us where it is, there may be someone local who can look for you. Or we can look on google streetmaps for you.
Please tell us the location :)
A4118 coming from Port Eynon towards Knelston Service Station.
On the left just before the Service Station is a school set back from the road up a short lane.

30 as I was photographed before I reached the 20 sign.
If the 20mph roadside sign was only 300mm diameter it was a repeater and there needed to be a terminal sign of at least 450mm diameter where the 30mph limit dropped to 20mph. You need to get back to the scene of your heinous crime to see what roadside signs there were and whether the small repeaters were spaced at 200m apart.
If it was classed as a '20mph zone' then all bets are off

Definitely worth appealing, how can you possible be charged for speeding before entering the 20MPH zone, Where the policeman was positioned tells me its just a cruel money making scam, if they cared enough about the safety of children, they would stop mums parking on either side of the road, blocking it to most 2 way traffic, its a real pain arround here, and they let the kids out much earlier these days.
Good luck with the appeal.

PS: The image capture date is 2016 so unless they have redone the road markings since then to add confusion??????

Where is that in relation to the school ?
That road sign is obscured by a tree.
Click the link you can navigate it yourself. That sign is not a speed limit sign it is a triangle school warning sign..

headlight I am sorry to say but I think they got you fair and square and you were in fact actually speeding past a school and it appears there was plenty of warnings. :(

You passed the double one in my last image alongside the road marking.

You then passed this single sign.

I was going to mention that there were no further repeater signs and that may be a thing you could use in your defence. But apparently this requirement was removed in 2016.

It shows the image capture as September 2016. Things could've changed since then.

I did state that. But do you honestly think they would have redone the speed circles on the road with a higher speed limit, left the signs in place just to confuse?

I also suspect but do not know for certain that the speed van will do a quick visual check that any speed limit signs are in place and not obscured before setting up to prevent a wasted session and a bollocking from the boss?

I agree with you entirely. I was just pointing it out. It's unlikely they've done that...but you never know :)

From what I've seen on Google Earth the road through the whole of Knelston is a 20mph limit. There are large 20mph gateway signs at both ends of the village.

Bugger, I'm sure it didn't look like that last week.
I'll have to hope I have better luck contesting the 138mph speeding ticket I got for the motorhome a couple of weeks ago.
For which there was another letter waiting for me today stating that I had to confirm that I was the driver or give the details of who was driving if it was not me.

You're not paranoid - they really are persecuting you.

I hope your luck changes for the better.

I've already told them that the supplied picture of my motorhome allegedly doing 138mph shows a Honda Civic and not a coach built motorhome.
Therefore I have no idea who the driver was as I don't own a Honda Civic.

If, well I suppose when I get points for speeding, the 26mph not 138mph, do I have to inform my insurers immediately or not until I renew ?
I've never had points before.

You may get the option to go on a course? Others will know better. I haven't been done for speeding since this option came in.

I've just written them another letter stating that I don't own and never have owned a Honda Civic so don't understand why they are sending me speeding fine letters for a Honda Civic.

Don't know if this helps.
Pic 1 shows the signs when entering Knelston going towards Port Eynon.
Pic 2 shows the signs when entering Knelston coming from Port Eynon.
Pic 3 shows the signs when entering Knelston when coming from Port Eynon taken a few metres nearer but mysteriously the signs have disappeared. In fact in pic 2 the signs look as if they have been photoshopped in especially when they seem to be at an angle to the road.

That image is from 6 years ago, I didn't see those 20mph gateway signs last Thursday or this morning.
Certainly not that I remember anyway.

I’d go back again and take pictures, even walk it if I had to.

If that hedge has over grown the signs I think you would have a good defence.

I’m not a solicitor but common sense says 😊

Coming from port Eynon there is a 30mph zone before you enter the 20mph zone starting just before the sharp right hand bend.
