If you have declared that you have an alarm to the insurer, and therefore received a discount to your premium, you are then obligated to set the alarm every time the vehicle is left unattended.

& if on your house you insure without an alarm then install one without notifying & are then burgled they won't pay out as they consider installing an alarm would encourage more thefts as it indicates that there is "something worth stealing" inside.

My renewal is £225 fully comp on a BMW R1250gs full no claims etc, I paid £160 last year, I insure through the IAM with an advanced rider qualification which I believe only makes a small difference, maybe it’s down to value of bike or postcode ? It definitely seems insurance costs are rising giving us less cover for our money

My motorcycle insurance cover is the same and has been for a few years now, it states I’m not covered on my own drive at anytime only in a locked garage, I suppose a bike on the drive may indicate a bike is stored there ? If I had to leave it out the front I could put it on the neighbours drive, Insurance companies seem to be a law upon to themselves these days

Yes it’s in a garage behind a garage but the insurance don’t know that, the car is in the garage Attached to the house but I don’t tell the insurance as they wanted more money to insure in the garage in case ladders or tins of paint fell on it, I did tell them I had no ladders or paint but made no difference so it’s insured on the drive, the motorhome lives on the drive with a security post, alarm, steering lock etc etc all insisted upon by insurance company, I don’t put it in storage as we hope to be away at least 6 months of the year until our 3 lads leave home but until then they pay all the bills

My husband has to get his motorcycle out if the internal garage, leave it on the drive ( no keys in it obviously ) then come back inside to lock up. Apparently if someone was to pinch it in those few minutes he would probably not be able to make a claim as it is only insured whilst in the garage…..how does that work??

My similar policy on my sports says the car must be in the garage between 10pm and 6am....if parked at home. So a similar situation if I left it on the drive....but only at night.

The stupid thing is if it is more than half a mile from home then it is covered, even if left on the street. So if the garage was not available I'd have to drive down the road and leave it there rather than leave it on my drive!

That's interesting and I can see their point. I have noticed in France that many people allow the outside of their houses to look a little unkept and not particularly attractive whilst the insides, when I have seen them, are really very nice. Perhaps that's why they do it.

Third party claim will be paid, your own damage won't.

I am not sure about that, I have always driven my motorhome in my pj's, sometimes drinking cocoa, sometimes tea and biscuits.
This of course is one of the main reason I have a motorhome, so relaxing

If you are in the house and someone nips in without you looking and nicks the keys to your van then surely they will pay up.

It could happen to any of us, how many people keep the doors house locked all day, whilst they are on the bog, in the shower etc.

If you leave the keys in the unlocked van yes I can see that.

No doubt your House Insurer will pay for a new set of keys!

But for the subsequent theft of van?

I can hear the sucking of cheeks as they separate the two incidents and deny your claim.

As an aside to the OP, we take both sets of keys when we're away but we take both of them with us when leaving the van for an excursion etc.

I have three sets of ignition keys, one set with a blind un-chipped ignition key that will open the van, but won't start it. My two working sets are unmarked as to what type vehicle they are used for. I also keep the secondary locking keys in two separate bunches.
After having given this some thought I have just added a key tag to all the separate key bunches. The tag merely contains my phone number with the U.K. + 44 dialling code, and our UK postcode. It is hoped this will be enough information to have the keys returned to us in the event we mislaid/ lost a bunch of keys subsequently found by some good Samaritan or authority figure, but not enough information to be of any use to any finder with other intentions. Not perfect, but

My son had a bike stolen from his garage. The thieves removed the back wall of the garage and two fences on properties adjoining my son's house. During the day when everyone was at work.

Daft thing is they took the fancy looking bike that had been pretty much stripped of all mechanics for parts and left the dull looking but expensive bike.

I was told by a friendly PC a few years ago that even in your PJ's, you can still be charged with 'being in CHARGE of a motor vehicle ' .

You attach a fob to your keys, it offers a £10 reward to return the keys to them.
From the serial number they can return them to you.
Costs about £20 a year from memory
