All the gear, and no idea!
Anyone on here with a Hymer Grand Canyon 4x4 Thoughts please…..
Asking for a friend👍

I have owned and driven 4wd vehicles since the 1970s. Things have moved on a lot.

A Reynolds Broughton, that is something I have never driven! An interesting vehicle.
🤣 as you say things have moved on probably more than I realised the years creep up very quickly🤣 enjoy your travels 👍

Friend wants to spend time in the Sahara, see the northern lights in the Nordic winter, and go to the eastern borders of turkey with Syria, Iran Iraq Azerbaijan and go to Georgia! He says it might be easier with a 4x4👍
That's a lot for a summer holiday.

Only the Syrian border and I don’t think anyone wants a holiday there. Georgia and Armenian crossings are fine. Armenia -> Azerbaijan is not possible. Didn’t Northernraider go to Georgia just last year?

WESTY66 when we were looking for a new van we did a lot of research into the Grand Canyon and other 4x4 vans. The biggest problem that stopped us was the sprinter body making them a bit more cramped than a Ducato and specifically: you can’t get 4x4 + PVC + longitudinal beds. So we ended up slightly bigger. Your friend should definitely look at a used Hymer 580 MLT. I’m sure CaptainPaul will be selling his soon.

I think my friend was talking Gaziantep (food capital of turkiye) Sianlurfa and Mardin, not literally up to the border fence👍

I’m sure CaptainPaul will want more than 70k for his Hymer🤣🤣🤣🤣
My friend is a short arse like me and can sleep across a sprinter. He’s wanting the nimbleness of a 6m van for parking and off-road 👍

That does seem to be a good price first impression, a very good price.

Check the "forehead" area inner roof thoroughly for moisture. Originally the Grand Canyon had no insulation there, which could result in lots of condensation and in worst cases dripped down to the control unit placed at the front and ruined it. Hymer later added cabin insulation as an optional extra that should also fix this problem, but best to check anyway. If you have one that does not have insulation, it might be worth it to insulate the area yourself. Some Armaflex for example will ibe a big improvement.
Sliding door and rear door insulation is meager at best (or non existant in older models), many re-inforce or replace it themselves.

If your friend can afford a van of that price, why doesn't he join FUN...
Or is he a member already? Asking for a friend...that is..🤔

If he’s serious and it’s the layout/spec he wants then I would move quick on that, it won’t be for sale long even in the current market
My only reservation is it’s your mates first Motorhome I presume? So he doesn’t know exactly what suits him yet?

Nevertheless it looks a steal, normal GCs 2021 sell for more than that, without the AWD

No it will be his 4th but his Mrs isn’t sure, coming from a luxury motorhome to a camper van isn’t her idea of a good time but he wants to off-road and explore a bit more🤷‍♂️👍👍

Tell your mate to tell his Mrs that it must be better than a converted mobile toilet/shower block ;)

We looked at several at Düsseldorf shows.

A bit cramped for us.

We had a La Strada Nova M, 3 litre V6 RWD. We didn’t like the bed in the roof, felt like a coffin.

I think the better option, unless you really want a PVC, would be the Hymer MLT.

With rear wheel drive a good all-season or winter tyres, you won’t need 4x4. As mentioned above, it’s more 4-Matic AWD.

Pity he couldn't come up a bit more £££
I know of an absolute stunner of a MLT 580 4X4 coming up, would keep SWMBO happy, it's a January 2025 fully loaded with every extra for 30+k less than new price.....

That's just not true. As stated above, it is just the border with Syria....it leaves a massive country open for exploring. (I'm following a young man who is cycling round the world, he has spent 2-3 weeks cycling across Turkey and loved every mile whilst meeting hundreds of very welcoming locals)

I've got a ML-580 4x4 and can vouch for the 4WD abilities. With low range, have managed some slopes in Alps and Pyrenees that I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. High clearance is a game changer too. And yes, good for muddy fields too!
