All the gear, and no idea!
Anyone on here with a Hymer Grand Canyon 4x4 Thoughts please…..
Asking for a friend👍

I've got a Canyon, Grand Canyon eBike back home and a Hymer MH here in Galicia... I'm the nearest answer so far...
I do like the look of the Hymer Grand Canyon...but I'd have to sell the apartment to buy it..
You thinking of buying one....I could test it for you....we don't live too far away from where that Hymer 4x4 turned over last year...🤔🥴

Not sure why 4x4 for a MoHo is attractive just a personal view, but given the relative fragility of MoHo’s who is going off road with them in the same way as an off road vehicle. It’s a Van so unless your going caravan racing and planning in 4 wheel drifts I’m not sure how useful 4x4 is.

Not sure 4x4 is the best solution for campervans. If in a muddy field anti slip mats under all wheels when parking up, and deep section all weather tyres helps a lot
4WD wont hurt but the extra cost and weight for those rare moments - feels a little like marketing BS for most

From memory, its also no flyweight - I think running under a 3,500kg limit is almost impossible given payload challenges - fine if thats not important though

Didn't someone write on fun a while back about this style of van lacking comfort, and useful storage, compared to a normal Road suitable Hymer..
I think I took that on board and decided not to bother...🤨

Friend wants to spend time in the Sahara, see the northern lights in the Nordic winter, and go to the eastern borders of turkey with Syria, Iran Iraq Azerbaijan and go to Georgia! He says it might be easier with a 4x4👍

Owned a Grand Canyon 4x4.

Pros and cons.

I had a 2WD GCS for 20,000 odd miles inc a Morocco trip.

Very easy to drive and park. Bit basic inside but If you use every inch of space you can make it work.

I now have the MLT on the same but 4WD chassis.

I’m sure the GCS 4WD would be a right proper van to have. The mechanicals are really good, it’s whether the space would work would be the question. A Poptop add space but kills the internal light and ventilation, and you can feel the weight of it above you.

We sold ours after Morocco as we ran out of comfort on a long trip, we replaced it with a superb A Class Carthago - very comfortable but not rock and roll enough for Mrs ABGS… hence the MLt.!

Check out my 2022 - 2023 posts.

If it was just for me I’d likely have another, but 4WD GCS or the equivalent LaStrada model.

He’d need to add insulation .. shocking little from the factory.

I notice my old GCS is still for sale with the dealer I traded it to 26 months ago!

Can anyone who’s been towed out of a muddy field answer that??😉🤣🤣🤣🤣
It like dragging a load of weight about for not a lot of reason high Center of gravity poor ride and use more fuel, a bit like most 4x4 drivers of these type of vehicles only time they go off road is in supermarket car parks 🤣

Do you kit it out with top notch sound system, I know you’re into that kind of stuff, I bet it’s great when it’s done but it fries my brain doing all the trim removal👍😁😁

Do you still have it?

What are the cons?
Sadly no! But that’s another story.

Would I have another, absolutely.

I have had several 6m vans, but had the 7m Grand Canyon S. The extras space is very noticeable, easier to organise things with the extra storage.

Will the next van be a Mercedes Sprinter 4x4? I would like to think so.

Does the extra height of the vehicle affect handling? Not at all during normal driving, the Mercedes chassis is well sorted.
Poor ride? Definitely not, the ride in the Mercedes is pretty compliant, especially when laden. Definitely better than several vans I have owned.
They may use more fuel than a comparable 2wd Sprinter, but better than other vans I have owned. High 20s MPG is quite achievable.
The reasons for owning a 4wd van will depend on what you want to use it for. The latest 4wd Sprinters are in fact AWD.

As long as it suits your type of use, I’ve had a few 4x4 vans years back Transits etc Broughton and some trucks, but to be fair never any real modern stuff 👍

My MLt has averaged 25mpg over 14000 miles. The 2WD GCS averaged 28.5 over 20,000 miles.

I have owned and driven 4wd vehicles since the 1970s. Things have moved on a lot.

A Reynolds Broughton, that is something I have never driven! An interesting vehicle.

I just bought a copy of this for my next trip.

Not really off road, more gravel road driving. That’s the environment these Sprinters are best in.
