Learn to crochet?

@Bernie8 Come on in - apart from my early attempts at explaining first steps, there are videos on YouTube which have proved helpful. Crochet for Absolute Beginners - Part 1 and Granny Squares by Bella Coco.

Our crochet experts are looking in so if you have any specific problems just shout.

Be warned it can be addictive - you might get hooked:LOL:

Thank you that would be wonderful. Are you going to Chester please? If not I will give you my address. ... starting to run out.
No not going to Chester but will get some posted to you just pm us where to post to and I'll get some posted at the weekend

Thank you. I will refund postage to you. :)

Whey hey.

I have been thinking over the last couple of months about learning to crochet.
Welcome to crochet corner:) as Pamela said watching the videos is a good way of learning as you can stop and start as you need to :)

I just made my first poppy. Not very happy with it, it has a hole in the middle and is only about two and half inches across. What pattern are you all using please. It must be better than the one I have. I dont have time to check all the 28 pages again looking for a link, to pattern or video. Can someone send me a link please.

has patterns. Use the patterns for ideas and then do your own thing to try out ideas :)

@Puddleduck I've heard of red poppies and white poppies but what do the other colours represent?

I am moving on to the cream granny squares today with not so many ends to weave in. Still estimating but think I may need 100.

The purple is for animals killed or injured during conflict and black is for people of colour caught up in conflict. Well those are the "official" colours but I think as long whoever has a flower of whatever colour and is sincere in their remembrance of creature (human or otherwise) who has been touched by the horror of war that is good enough.

100 squares to make a blanket sounds about right to me :)

Welcome Martin the more the merrier!! @Jim was supposed to be having a go but he is a bit busy making a croquet lawn:whistle:

I really do like the curly poppies @Aly1 I tried to watch the video but without sound it was hopeless. I don't know why I cannot get sound on videos.

Hi I am guessing you can follow crochet patterns as you are beloved leader in all things crochet so I looked up the pattern mentioned in the video and here it is via a screen shot as I can't create a link. If you google "crochet Asta Lott" there is a link to the pattern which when you click on it it downloads onto your computer.

Thank you @SueTayBon Couldn't resist having a go at the poppy but it is so big it would fit on the front of a car!!

Don't count this one Joy @movan I've a feeling this is going to end up on my black cloche hat. I will try a simpler pattern(y)

The colour is actually a rusty red mohair not like the pinky shade in the photo.

I think it looks lovely. I use DK, I use a 4mm for the black (otherwise I can't see my stitches), then I swap to 3.5mm for the red.

I’ve actually been doing a bit of knitting lately. Is there a pattern to follow for the poppies? What size diameter is everyone working at?

Lisa .. any diameter but most of us aiming at around two inches .. some slightly bigger .. some slightly smaller .. and all different depending on the gin. ;)

PS .. should add when you finish any .. deduct the number from the LAST total ... we are aiming for 50,000 !!!! Honest. :)

See my post above

I’ll have a little lookie tomorrow and see whether I can get some wool....I’ll look for a pattern. Found one but looked too intricate, there’s got be an easier one ;)

For a change from poppies, here's a quite simple pattern for using up odds and ends of yarn - although they do need to be a similar thickness.

https://atty-s.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/flower-scarf-pattern.html

I made it into a festival shawl using tapestry wool as I don't intend to wash it :)

Janine, just seen this and Joy knowing me pointed it out, love it will be asking you about it at Chester

Just in case you wonder why I've changed my ac
avatar it's so all the newbies will recognise me at Chester, lol . :D

@Lisa .. does Ven's post help until someone finds some more for you. X

@Lisa If you can go on the norfolk knitters and stitchers site you will find instructions for a knitted poppy. There must be a way of doing a link but I don't know how. The instructions are for 4ply or double knit.

I think I will be focusing on a simpler pattern if I'm to produce dozens of poppies (that is when I've finished my current project!!!!)
