Learn to crochet?

With my other projects I’ve started (too many ha ha ) I’m targeting myself to do at least one poppy a day, these are mine so far :)

I’ve just watched the simply daisy film on YouTube. So I will open the kit I bought the other day and make a start whilst enjoying my snow day.

No crocheting here, but yesterday my friend and I knitted and constructed these flower sticks which we plan to ‘plant’ as part of our yarn bombing event in our village in May.

Wow Helen that is lovely:)
I’ve done another ten poppies this evening no buttons in yet though
Sorry about the light we only had the lamps on so it’s a bit dark

The poppies look fantastic. I have made some in fabric as well :)

My Elements square is much easier than it looks - if you can make a slipknot, do chain, slipstitch, double / treble crochet you can make them and the video is really clear. Easier to watch and follow along the video than use the pattern. It's more a question of where you stick the hook than anything else. I do love the texture :) I have two half balls of the yarn (about 200gm on each as they are the remnants of 400gm balls) left over from a pair of Aran sweaters I made for someone - I will use up what I have and I have put a request on Freecycle in case anyone locally has part balls they want rid of, but not the end of the world if I have to buy more as our local craftshop (in the garden centre) stocks it. Even if there is a slight colour change it doesn't matter.

We have snow here today but need to get some shopping as we are taking in a couple of homeless migrants for a short while...... Martin's sister and brother-in-law have sold their house, completed and got the cash and are waiting for the purchase of their new-to-them house in Italy to be finalised :) I made a sign for the door into their room (in Italian) that welcome's them to the hostel for the migrant homeless...... I think I might get a thump!!!

well I think I need to join in, that is a lot of poppies. I am not sure what pattern you are using, so if someone could let me know. I used to do a lot of crocheting, but not since I took up bobbin lace and tatting.

This was posted earlier in the thread and it's the one I'm following for now.

We start off using the patterns on the videos on this thread, Sue ...and end up doing our own thing ... well I do .. because I can't crochet. :) as long as they LOOK like poppies and our heart is in the right place. Welcome aboard lo ely lady. Xx

@Puddleduck

If we put a black button in the centre and @Jenben is prepared to share her daisy stick flower pattern with us .. could we use that as a poppy ...? Just so that when we need a change from poppies or doing squares we could try that beautiful flower. I have had some really unusual poppies from garden centres and some have looked like that.

I don't see why not. Some of my efforts don't look at all like the traditional poppy but this is ART and it would be so boring if every flower looked the same. I have even used a red/ivory/grey yarn to make some of mine and they look :sicker: as if they have mosaic virus but they will fill a space.....

I have decided (I think) to stick with the squares resulting from part one of the video :) The result at the end of part two are lovely but probably too big and heavy to work comfortably in Aran weight yarn. If I get offers of the same yarn in different colours I will have a multicolour blanket (but stick to ivory as the unifying colour) but if not I will play around with the placement of the French Navy as I am incapable of making the same thing exactly the same over and over!

I have a needlework frame in a cupboard that I got from a charity shop and have never used that I think might work for "blocking" the square and making it really square. I'll dig it out and see if I can get that to work.

Oops forgot the total, thanks Joy :)

I’ve made 2 more this morning so it’s now = 49,964

Every little helps ;)

@joy , the flowers are made using something called a flower loom , they look a bit odd and are made of plastic, we used it to make the flowers and then put some double sided sticky tape along garden canes and wrapped wool around . Yesterday my friend made this one, with black buttons sewn into the flower centres it does look like poppies.

I think if we put a little bit of crochet power onto the lovely @Indy259 Chris, she MAY join us. :)

If you have any of those foam interlocking floor tiles that they sell at the shows, they work well for blocking.

I spent yesterday afternoon and evening catching up with all 27 of this thread. What a fantastic achievement to have got some new people into crochet (I can see you all when you meet up, helping those who need a few tips to help them improve, apart from time and practice). You inspired me to hunt through my knitting wall. I found only one ball of red, but I should get a few out of that, but also found some white, black and some purple. I hunted through the info I read yesterday to check for colours. I have lots of size crochet hooks so going to see if I can work out from your images, how to make some of these to add to your collections. Last year the call went out around various groups to make and donate poppies to decorate Exeter Cathedral, I think they wanted 3000 and ended up with 30000. They were stunned, but people shared the thread and it spread, so knit and natter groups, individual people and womens groups made these. The effect was absolutely Stunning. Initially it was for the Devon and Exeter show, to demonstrate how many local men had died in WW1 but in the end they had the greater amount for the Cathedral.

What an amazing tribute. So I am off to see if I can encourage my brother (if he can still manage to work a crochet hook, after his stroke) and 2 sisters to make a few each. Cant guarantee them, but I will definitely make some. I needed some inspiration to do something and you have all given me some.

Don't forget to photo what you do, Sue and tell us the number so we can deduct. Yeah.

I think there may be some ladies earlier in the thread who have made some too with numbers to be deducted.

There are those who mocked our ambition but we are getting the number down slowly but surely. :)
