I have watched ‘The Duellists‘ directed by Ridley Scott with Keith Carridine and Harvey Keitel many times. I just love the scenes, shot with such care and skill, that each look like a painted tableau. The story, based on a Joseph Conrad novel, is about a duel between two officers in Napoleon’s army that can’t take place due to the fact that promotions prevent the duel. The duelling rules apparently prohibited officers of different ranks from duelling. The perceived slight, that leads to the challenge to duel, is almost forgotten so much time intervenes until they’re in a position to duel.
The scenes of rural France are so atmospheric that, at times in France, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the characters passed you in a village backstreet.
Ridley Scott’s first film as a director and, in my view, never bettered.
