3 weeks ago my starter battery failed.
It was 13 months old and had a 3 year warranty.
I had to buy a new one.
I contacted the motor factors it came from to see about claiming under the warranty.
They wanted me to take the battery back to them but they are 480 miles away.
I offered to take the battery to a local Yuasa supplier or Yuasa themselves, 25 miles away.
Both these suggestions were refused.
The factors then asked me to send them a copy of the report and proof of purchase which I did.
I have chased up the motor factors today and been told that I must return the battery to their suppliers as that is who my warranty is with.
Their suppliers are over 400 miles away from me.
Where do I stand as I would have thought my contract is with the factors who sold me the battery.
Neither the factors or their suppliers are willing to pay for me to post it to them.

Update.
The shop I bought the battery from will not refund me.
They won't refund me because their supplier won't refund them.
The supplier won't refund the shop because Yuasa won't refund them.
Yuasa won't refund the supplier because Yuasa only actually warranty their batteries for 12 months and my battery failed after 13 months.
I have spoken to Yuasa themselves who confirmed the above and stated that any warranty offered over 12 months is not a manufacturer warranty but a retailer warranty.
They, Yuasa, suggested I take the shop to the small claims court.

Last time I did it it cost £30 to start a small claim.

Many thanks for flagging up not to buy a Yuasa product as they only JUST outlast their warranty.
I would post your experience up on every social media site that's liable to have contributors who might equally make the same mistake. Then tell Yuasa what you're about.

It's not Yuasa's fault, in fact it is nothing to do with them.
The problem is 100% the fact that the shop won't honour the warranty.
Yuasa don't supply the shop they supply a factors or other party who have then supplied the shop.
Yuasa informed me that they check that the companies they supply maintain their batteries correctly ie keep them charged and rotate their stock.
However what state the shop kept the battery in and how long they had had it is anyone's guess.
The battery may well have been damaged before I even bought it.

Your contract is with the shop who supplied to you. End of story. Who can claim from whom down the line me is not your problem and just an excuse. I would just go straight to small claims now, they have had their opportunity to put things right. The chances are you will get your money back plus court fees.

I have a Yuasa starter battery it's been in the van 2 years working fine. It's a Yuasa 5000 which is their 5 year guaranteed one. Bought it from Halfords so pretty save if it does die.

For several yrs i was useing Yuasa leisure Batteries as a good friend at Colchester fuel injection worked there.
I had them faulty on 3 different lots i concluded i would never buy another. I was never out of pocket but fed up with having to change them over the yrs. Just my experience.

Pleased after 2 years?

My last engine battery was 16 years when it failed, but they built them better then.

I have no problem having another Yuasa battery just not from that shop.

Your contract is with the shop were you bought it, and they will claim, had you been prepared, at your expense, to return it where you bought it from, I'm sure they would have replaced it.
You were not prepared to do this so, how can they replace it?

If you take it to the Small Claims court, in my opinion (and I've been there a few times), you will lose and incur even more expense.
I would write it off as experience but it's up to you?

It's a bit like insurance, we have to have it but they don't want to pay up in the event of a claim. Same as warranties they're not worth the paper they are written on. We had an Indesit washing machine that died 12 months and 2 weeks after purchasing, shop wasn't interested, would have cost too much to repair so skipped it ! After 12 months guarantee is over " forget it "

My Yuasa battery failed just after 2.5 years and I was told the same thing, sorry it’s out of warranty
I wouldn’t buy another one

I would suggest you get them to agree to pay for a courier to collect to return to them.
I do believe that the point of sale is responsible however I think that I would take it to Yuasa and ask them. If not then courier it to them (COD)

I've posted that I've offered to pay to have it couriered back to the shop. The shop don't want it.
Yuasa have said that the shop should accept the battery report I sent them without needing the battery returned anyway.

You might have thought Yuasa would like to know why their battery has only lasted the almost minimum warranty. I'd assume they would be able to run some sophisticated test on the battery and determine the reason for the battery's demise.

I don't think I would give myself so much stress about a relatively small loss.I know its a matter of principle for some but I would just write it off. Batteries are easily misused and it's hard to prove you haven't overdischarged it at some time.
I'm not stressed, I've given up.
The replacement starter battery is a Lucas with a 3 year warranty fitted by my local garage.
They got the battery from an ATS across the road from them (I actually watched them walk across the road and carry my new battery back).
I asked what would happen if I had a problem with it in warranty and was told they would just take it back across the road to ATS and get another.
They said they'd never had a problem with ATS returning a battery in warranty.

For the last 12 years or so I have purchased my batteries from Tayna. All good apart from one that quite early on started to drop its charge. I contacted Tayna and discussed how to proceed they immediately offered to replace it but I offered to give it some time on charge it off the vehicle and see what happened. It still dropped its charge so they just sent me a new one, no arguments and no hassle. When I asked about returning the defective unit they said no need, just dispose of it as you wish. Guess who will continue to get my business ;). Incidentally the replacement is fine.
I've had the opposite with Tayna replaced my battery approx 18 months ago with a yuasa battery from Tayna which I've just had to change again as it wouldn't hold a charge, the battery had 3 year guarantee but Tayna needed battery back, so return via courier cost of about £17 only for Tayna to say battery had been allowed to discharge and wouldn't be covered under warrantee, while at home vehicle is on permanently EHU with Sargent EC450 looking after batteries, so I also don't have faith in Battery warrantees.

I hate to tell you this but, in the past (in Birmingham), there was a connection between Lucas and Yuasa.
(put into Bing 'Where are Lucas batteries made')

The lesson we can all gain from this is, get your battery checked often, do it near home so you can buy a new battery, local.

I just googled that and according to this report Yuasa stopped making batteries for Lucas in 2006.
Lucas batteries are now part of Ecobat and the batteries are Numax.

I did say, 'in the past' :giggle: But I think it was Yuasa that severed the relationship due to poor working reports or so I read.
