Who has priority?

The purple car has priority as he has effectively entered the main road in advance of the red car who then must give way.

I can't either. :)
There doesn't seem to be a specific rule in the highway code, however rules 170 to 183 cover junctions so you could look at those, but as you can see from my previous post driving schools are teaching the same thing I learnt way back when I passed my test in 1975 :giggle:

No. They are both stopped at Give Way lines in the scenario. The car turning right gives way to the oncoming traffic, irrespective of where it's going next.

But there is no oncoming traffic until the purple car enters the main road therefore red gives way. We are ignoring the blue car and purple and red are turning to proceed in the same direction.

OK, work out the American 4 way STOP.
All roads have a STOP sign.... Who has priority

I think what driving schools are teaching as shown in one of my previous posts is pretty clear, the driver turning right across the flow of traffic gives way, unless the other driver indicates for him to go first.

I would say the red car has priority as the other one would be crossing its path by turning right.

That said, its a long time since I looked at the Highway Code.

Red car as the purple car needs to cross a lane of traffic.
Very straightforward, this is the correct answer.

I have a similar one on my way to work every morning and most people seem to get it but there are always some who think it's whoever gets there first.

After a couple of near misses at a road junction near my house, I posed this question on our local Facebook page. The answers were both varied and, in some cases, downright frightening!

At a crossroads, two cars have approached from opposite directions and stopped at the give way markings.

Edit: The red car is turning left, the purple car is turning right to travel in the same direction.
Edit #2: Ignore the blue car - it doesn’t exist 😀

Who has priority?
A. The one driving the biggest car.
B. The one who got to the junction first (by a nanosecond).
C. The one turning right.
D. The one turning left.
E. No-one. Quickest off the mark wins.

The red car is not positioned correctly to turn right 🙄

It is blue-red-purple.
As soon as the blue car passes the red car can turn left whereas the purple car cannot if they have traffic approaching from the right which they have to cross.

Neither car has priority. It’s a ‘known’ issue and new roads these days should be designed so that crossroads like this aren’t in play. They will have lights or be roundabouts....in theory. Motorists should approach and negotiate with caution. Meanwhile....back in reality......it’s a sit and wait to see who wants to go first! Me....if I was turning left I would expect to go first so red car turns first.

Whitevanman always has priority(y)

All you need to know about traffic signs!

The clue is in the wording 'Give Way', if there is nothing to give way to on the main road then the two opposing vehicles you mentioned have equal opportunity to set off, once one moves off then the 'give way' position exists again for the second vehicle. So first off wins the day!

The red car and purple car both stop in the middle of the major road to have a chat because they haven't seen each other in a while. The learner in the blue car has road rage because he is obstructed, while his driving instructor has a nervous breakdown.

Okay, lets take the blue car out of the equation.

If the red car is turning left and the purple car is turning right to travel in the same direction, who has priority?

The red car has priority. 👍
