Where to put the Maxxair fan?

Connected electrics up at the convenient extractor supply over the kitchen and tidied everything up.

It looks great (y) Are you pleased with how it works?

Been testing it this evening, even on maximum it’s quite quiet and drops the temperature inside noticeably. Time will tell if it’s worth the cash which wasn’t cheap!

The current draw on maximum is very impressive at only 3 amps. If you are off hook up a lot like we are, I think it will be ideal.

Try using it with and without other openings. I really notice how much air it moves but it needs to replace that air.

Just to update, I have been in the van all afternoon.

Very impressed!

The van wasn’t hot when I went in as I left the fan on auto and it had kicked in. Even with all the windows just on vent and only the skylight open, the temperature inside was fine.

It was a lot of money but worth it.

Ours is still in its box while we try to fathom which roof light to replace it with. The sat dish is very close (fraction of inch) to the centre and rear heckies. The Maxair cover looks like it could catch as the Oyster moves. I'm going to try to make a mock up of the fan to test it before we start the job.
I think I'll get up a ladder and take a video of the dish going up, I've tried to look whilst standing on the bed with my top half jammed through a 40cm heikie, the word jammed was the correct word, I blame Covid for the extra weight , I should blame Lindt chocolate.

It’s arrived, sealant is coming, now I just need to decide where to put it.

First thought was above the beds at the back and replace the existing roof light.

However I can also put it in the middle between the chimney for the oven and the bathroom skylight.

Where has everyone else put theirs?

Electrics are no issues and I am happy sorting that as I am cutting new holes.

Will it weaken the roof though with too many openings?

Will the benefit be better with the fan over the beds at the back or in the middle? My worry is in the middle nobody will feel the benefit, at least at the back it will blow on the kids. We sleep at the front.

All opinions and help gratefully received.

Having read some of the comments I’m convinced! Maxair is the next purchase.
I presently rely on a number of small oscillating fans plus a repurposed computer fan in the roof vent over my bed. They work quite well but I think a proper setup may be best for my European tour next year ( Covid allowing🙄).

Well done on the install I got mine fitted in the back above the beds makes a huge difference in keeping it cool and when it's on no condensation on windows in the morning , just wish I had fitted it myself I got charged a huge amount to have it installed much more than the fan cost , so well done you .

We’ll done on the install.

I’m interested in fitting one. Anyone fitted a one in an 8 metre van? I’m considering replacing the cheap, plastic, very insecure rooflight in the kitchen area, which is forward of half-way along the roof. Is it likely to be effective towards the back in the bedroom or might I need two? Could put one in the bedroom at the back Instead, or perhaps fit two.

Ours is in the middle and you can feel it working front and back.

I would go for the middle and if not adequate, then get another.

Googlebot I realise you went for a central location for your install but given your experience with the airflow etc firsthand, I hope you don't mind me asking you something? We are considering a maxxfan as well, mainly for my daughter who really does suffer in the heat. We don't want aircon as we don't use sites enough to make it worthwhile. We were considering putting it over the rear beds, using the extract setting and then opening either the rear beds side window, or possible the front panoramic skylight, to get a pull-through effect and cooling the van this way. Given your experience with the unit, does that sound feasible to you?

Absolutely ours is above the beds in the back put it on low setting can't hear it but can feel the air getting taken out the van much better sleeping environment, wake up feeling fresh , not stuffy.

That’s what I do with mine , thermostatically controlled so cool all night but not too cold

Absolutely, what Trout bum said.

With it on full it actually sucks the door shut from an inch away. Over the rear beds you can clearly feel the airflow with it in the middle. Once it’s cooled down at night I expect this will be even better.

Agree with Scotch mist too, it only goes as fast as is needed to maintain a temperature. I set it yesterday and as it warmed up this morning, it switched itself on and kept the van cool.

Mine is a 7.2 meter van and it works very well, not needing to be above 30%

Imissed the start of this thread so didn’t offer my 2pennies worth, we have our fitted at the back over the lounge / bed area and if we open either a side window or the other roof light situated at the front of the fan, then we can get a really great flow of air from outside in the front , down the van and out the back. Great if you have been cooking fish or curry or if it is warm outside as it was over the last 3 days in mid wales. It worked a treat.

Didn't someone make a copy of one of these using a car radiator fan and an eBay controller, hooked onto the existing roof light? Just wondering how loud that route would be as the max Air seems very expensive.

I did think of making my own, but I can use this in the rain and it’s near silent on low speed and not that loud at full blast.

It May work but will always look like a bodge.

I have 2 new spare radiator fans. I fabricated a bracket for the last van so I could use one of them to keep the dog cool. It required 25A fused cigarette socket, modified to actually be able to maintain the current, & in a vehicle where the engine & general noise was deafening when travelling it drowned all that out.

Wow!

For comparison the Maxxair uses 3 amps.

Our motorhome is 7.5m long and we decided to put it at the back above the bed. It draws air from the large roof light at the front. I have to say it works very well and isn’t too noisy at all. As the op says they are not cheap but if you don’t have air con they are the next best thing.
