Where to put an external LPG filler

My filler in the door (already in there when I bought) is on the opposite side to my fuel which as mentioned by some others can be a right pain. I normally pop in or get the OH to to reassure the fuel attendant that I'm not doing a runner if they see me moving!

Filling point in the door is definitely not recommended by Gaslow and is in our opinion not a great idea.
Sometimes it is pretty much the only option but be careful as the stainless steel hoses seem to harden over time especially when they are repeatedly subjected to being flexed.
We advise changing the hose regularly if it’s installed in the door .
Personally I would prefer a filler mounted on a bracket inside the locker if no other suitable position is available.
Dealers are a nightmare for choosing the easiest option.

VanBitz are suitably qualified.
Same set up as you.
It's fitted in the door.
AshVanBitz

They fitted top left so that the hose gets minimal movement every time the door is opened.

Other consideration of filler position.
Ideally, it should be on the same side as your fuel inlet.
The hight should be between knee and shoulder, ideally about waist height.
I've seen inlets fitted into the skirting, which other than he obvious issues with LPG pipes close to the ground means that to fill the tanks you need to on your knees on a filthy garage forecourt.

Don't be tempted to fit the filler point inside a locker, as I've seen attendants rush out to stop 'in locker' filling.
Gas vapour in enclosed spaces, and you are obviously not running the engine on LPG but using it for cooking.

In most countries (including the UK), LPG for domestic purposes (heating/cooking), is taxed at a different rate to LPG for vehicles.

Whilst the difference is not much, it means that technically a vehicle fuel station should not be selling LPG from a pump for domestic purposes. Hence we all 'should' be buying LPG from yacht marinas, builders yards and campsites. ;)
I am unaware of any qualification for gas instalation in a Motorhome. Can you give me a link please to the qualifications.

I have a standard Gas installation certificate, supplied by VanBitz and pinned to the inside of the gas locker.
Home or motorhome, no difference, same certificate.

I understood there are none required for a Motorhome for private use.

That's where mine is - it's a very neat installation done before I acquired the van.

It may not be a legal requirement for private use, but that does not mean you should have any gas work done without a certificate (home or motorhome)

If a gas installer is not prepared to issue a certificate then they are not installing gas in anything I own.

I run a number of properties, all of which have gas installations, we legally have to get gas certificates every year for every property and every gas item in every property.

We do the same for our own home as well.

Do you recon this one had a gas cert ?

I wouldn't be digging holes in the side of my van or in a door for that matter.

Either in the skirt or just below with the small black cover. on it.

Fitted mine in the skirt and never have to kneel on the ground.

I put ours in the skirt and don't have to kneel on the ground to attach the hose, I just bend over ... I always do it as hubby has his 'spare tyre' in the way which makes bending difficult! 😄

The older versions of my moho had the LPG in the garage so you could put the filler in the outside wall. I think Hymer changed the design to make it easier to access the cylinders.
Yes, access to the gas cylinders is better, but on balance I think I would have chosen the large garage door - as on the previous Exsis-i

Either way, I do not see any real need for an external filler with our Safefill bottles - certainly not with bottles coming out on the new Hymer Exsis--i slideout

When my new bottles were fitted it was pointed out the vent was under the original bottles, pointless

I fitted mine in the skirt on the opposite side to the diesel filler
I've never needed to fill both at the same visit to a garage 😁

I think you are over worrying, the fill hoses are very heavy.
Just remembered in my current van my pipe comes down in front of the bottles.

I'll take some pics later being dragged out around a German town now.
The new fill hoses supplied are only 12mm thick plastic pipe. Nothing like the hoses going from bottle to regulator.

Where are these lot of places? Most of the ones I've used don't leave the office to take a look.
Bristol gas he told me make sure there an external fitting before I changed mine. And the one I filled at I Telford last week only fills external not bottles
The van I have currently had bottles fitted 12 years ago and the filler is inside the locker. No sign of one being anywhere else so I'm assuming they got filled without issues. I've rarely had anyone come out a station and fill my lpg for me on any of my previous vans so I'm inclined to.leave well enough alone and continue to use the internal filler.

Although these days it makes no difference whether inside or not as now they supply valves to fill ordinary calor bottles with an external filler. ...like this

So any attendant wouldn't know the difference.

So to be honest having the door open to fill could be a good thing ...they'd see then it was a proper refillable bottle.

They really shouldn't be allowed to sell them.

When some clown blows a huge crater in a garage forecourt killing themselves and many around them, there will be a belated hysteria and rush for new legislation, probably outlawing ALL self filling gas operations.
Mike.

Mines inside the locker. Never been refused in over 5 years.
Ours is the same, we filled up at Asda ,in Derby on the Derby road, no issues ,but had to pay for the gas before we filled up with deisel, gas ,72.9p and diesel £152.9.
.in Spain now and the Spanish attendant ,fitted my adaptor inside the locker and filled up the lpg with no issues. Also filled my deisel and adblue. Diesel at 171.9 euros and adblue ,97 cents. (y)
