We have a 2010 Autotrail frontier navajo.
Thinking of getting a car to tow.
What cars do you tow?

Fiat 500 is a lovely tow car for 2 or 4 people. We have a tow bar to tow car version and hardly notice it behind the MH.

Before looking for a car check your train weight.
That's the weight of both van and car combined.
If it's withing the train weight then ok.
If it's more it's not legal.
Can you explain the train weight please, and how I find it for my motorhome?
Thanks.

The VIN plate has this information .. usually in the engine bay

example plate
..
The first weight is the MAM .. 3300kg .. (Max Authorised Mass)
The second is the Train weight 5300 kg

subtract the MAM from the Train gives the max towing weight

in this example that is 2000kg

the other two weights are front and rear axle weights

I tow a VW Up. Nice little 4 door car with decent boot, comfortable and nice to drive. Tows well unlike it’s predecessor a Smart which often misbehaved.

If I did want to take a tow car I'd use my VX220. :giggle: (It would need to be trailered though)

if you plan to go abroad that is a good plan.. A frames being illegal in most EU countries..

downside is the extra space required on a pitch for the trailer and the car.. not a problem on most UK sites, but not so easy on busy aires in France .. but not a deal breaker.. quite often see trailers on aires , I had a large USRV 36ft plus a box trailer and used lots of aires... toured al of Europe and Morocco

19 month year 18000 miles UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Italy. Campsites and off Grid.

Thank you

I would really like to get a towbar and trailer on my motorhome as I often take the VX220 down through France for Trackdays and often worry about the consequences breaking down or damage but sadly not enough room on my drive for a motorhome, trailer plus the everyday car.

I had one of these to tow.

Would have another

Low kerb weight
Big payload
4 passengers with luggage space
Doubles as a great run around van

Downside for me was it attracted too much attention.

Buyer had three dogs in two cages in the back

Available in manual, auto and AWD in both .

Hi Another for the Toyota Aygo which was our Towed Car an which we towed for about 3000 miles plus. One point to note that whilst ours was an Automatic Aygo I believe you cannot tow the Toyota IQ Automatic as the gearboxes are very different in design. In effect the Toyota Aygo has an automatic clutch rather than an automatic gearbox so you need to consider whether some Automatic Cars are suitable.

Tell me more about your MX5 Please! We have an MX5 mk2.5 Phoenix, I’d read that you can’t tow them as it buggers up the gearbox and differential. Did you have any issues? We currently tow Kathryn’s Aygo but when the Samoyeds pass away we’ll only have Rosie the Yorkshire Terrorist with us and she loves the ‘5. (The Samoyeds and the Terrorist can’t all fit in the ‘5 if I take SHWMBO as well)

Cheers!

I tow with a VW up. We tried various small cars and found the Up to have more room, smoother gear box and bigger boot. Free tax, excellent mpg and a great little run around.

I’d be more concerned with which company you are going to use (if not already on car) for adapting the car and supplying the frame. We had a frightening experience with Towtal and then got the work rectified at TAF, Chesterfield. Would never recommend Towtal but TAF were brilliant and safe!

I was told by two companies that there is nothing at the front that would be suitable to hang an A frame onto so we went for a trailer. Having had a rummage around under the bonnet I can understand what they were talking about. The first substantial is the crossmember way back from the front. Everything from the nosecone are just panels and plastic.
