What’s been your best Motorhome?

1. What’s been your best Motorhome?
Our current Carthago C-Compactline i-138
2. Why is it the best?
It is fantastic quality and meets our (current) needs almost perfectly
3. How many did you have before it?
Let me think ... since 1995 we've had: Commer Autosleeper (campervan), home conversion based on an ex-ambulance, Elddis Autoquest 320 (coachbuilt), Swift Suntor 590RS (coachbuilt), Rapido 709F (coachbuilt), Rimor Sailer 645TC (coachbuilt), Chausson Flash 04 (coachbuilt), Autocruise Accent (PVC), Globecar Familyscout L (PVC), Globecar Campscout (PVC) ... so that's 10!
4. How much did it cost?
Suffice to say it was a LOT of money  although less than it could have been! :p

What’s been your best Motorhome? Our current Rapido 10 series bought from a fellow member
Why was it the best? build quality and all the toys
How many did you have before it? I used to buy and sell vans so no idea other than a lot. Sometimes I would buy a van, do it up, use it next weekend and sell it Sunday afternoon. Then go out and buy another to repeat
How much did it cost? this van cost 20x what my dad paid for the house I grew up in

BEST in all our 13 purchases was a Buccaneer. Built in Sutton near York.
It was the very first motorhome manufactured with a rear bathroom and the build quality was exceptional. I would bet it's still in use today and giving someone a lot of pleasure. We purchased this new from Lowdhams as they had just started selling motorhomes. After sales was excellent (Then).
I cannot believe it's 2020 and we are being presented with such total crap.

The best without any hesitation was my RMB Silver Star 760 and matching RMB Fitzel trailer although I love my old Tiffin Allegro for its classic looks.
The reason it was the best was that the build quality was second to none. The original RMBs were recognised by competitors as being in a class of there own that could never be matched in the day.
Possibly 20 or 30 had passed through my hands prior to my first RMB and maybe another 10 since then.
Have no idea how much I paid for it now, but I do know I sold it too cheap, but it did go to a very good home.

Horses for courses. The N and B flair when we got there, the Adria twin getting there, the Hymer classic because it was our first one, and the Hymer star line 630 was brilliant, if I’d have kept it , I would have put air suspension on it.
The Winnebago warrior became and is our surrogate home during the covid crisis, comfortable, juicy, but at 2 quid a gallon here in the USA does it matter.

My current van (as pictured)
The quality is another level compared to some I have owned. Huge payload, garage that takes a scooter and excellent fuel economy.
Quite expensive but when you consider the good times you have in it - priceless!
17 previous campers of every type of denomination

First one was most fun and cheapest by far (after 30+ years of caravanning). Merc base but poor payload, which was why we swapped for a bigger one after discovering that.

Frankia Platin 8400GD
Second to none build quality, payload, Mercedes chassis/engine/gearbox combo
4th, 1 x Knaus, 3 Frankias
Too much?

Burstner 695 t-star
Good quality finish and built on the merc 316 it pulled well
Cost £21500 got it cheap
Two before

What’s been your best Motorhome?
Hymer 584

Why was it the best?
Good solid van, best layout, reliable.

How much did it cost?
Less than you’d think!

My best motorhome was a Dethleffs T6611
It took us all over UK, Spain and France, no habitation issues and no chassis issues.
This was our first MoHo but we have had since then, a good Hymer a Swift, and now a very comfortable Hobby Van Exclusive TL 500 GESC. The quality of the Hymer and Hobby was great but none of them came up to the Dethleffs T6611
We paid around £26,000 for the Dethleffs. at 9 years old.
May look for another Dethleffs when this is all over.

1996 to 2019, A VW LT31 Florida, big brother to the California. Rarely seen in the UK as I believe was never exported, very ugly looking but 20 years ahead of its time in interior style ( no beige, just calming shades of grey) Imported from Germany at 2 years old and a very expensive DM equivalent of £22k.
My brand new van, a Malibu is great, but quality of build is incomparable to the Florida. This must have been the hayday for Volkswagen, cannot remember her ever not start first time. Following our final two month trip to Sweden in her last year, and pulling the back bench seats together every night to make the bed, we decided to "upgrade". No gripes with her replacement, just wish they still made them like the Florida

Managed to dig this photo out of my files.
I'd love to know how it's doing now.
Fantastic van. If anyone knows where it's at please let me know.

Our first motorhome was a self build using a 1965 VW mini bus that had stood for 5 years, we towed it home, renovated it fitted a lift up roof (cut out by hand saw on a Sunday afternoon )
when most of the miners around us were sleeping off their Sunday boozing , I was very popular, they were all cheering me on whilst waving at me from their bedroom windows
The most loved was a Hymer S700, couldn't pass a bicycle or a filling station but great old motor

It won't tell you where it is but if you go on the MOT check you can at least see if it's still being used.

Everyone has been the best at the time.

First one a Hymer Tramp Gold Edition.
It was the best equipped as standard came with Oyster sat, Subwoofer under the bed. Internal quality was better than newer vans. I bought RHD, wish it had been LHD.
Cost 47k, bought in Belgium so 10K cheaper than could get it for in the UK.

2nd one was a Hymer Exsis A Class.
A good van but a bit basic but it was a cheap way to get into an A class.
Cost 58K from Belgium of course, 15k cheaper than UK. Got only a few k short of what we paid for it on trade in after 3 years.

Current van a Hymer 678 Dynamic Line.
I think we like it the best but internal lightweight construction not on par with the Tramp, has a good payload with over 1350kg and a huge garage.
Cost 72k from Belgium (UK list 96k) but spent over 10k on it.

I never have understood why you sold that Tony.
Wanted something a little smaller a clou on the vario chassis but its still going strong now its hard to part with the sliding door 614 we did scoty with it and did a lot of wild camping as its narrow but still want a liner N B Vario or something off that build take care ps this was ours in 91

Best was a damon intruder
It was a time in my life when I was winning races and living the dream (young and spending money like brewster) with a good group of friends sleeping in the van
Had 3 small Van's before it
Didn't look, just imported it from the states using sponsor money

Wish I could go back and do it again, wouldn't change a thing

Only owned one but caravanned for 45 years so we changed to a EuraMobil Terrestra 570HS (alcove over cab) as we reckoned that at 76 we were getting a bit past it for all that tugging when we arrived on site. Why the best? Easy, the build quality is fantastic and there is huge underfloor storage with all the heating pipes and water tanks between the two floors. We had. Burst her caravan as our last caravan which convinced us of German build quality and a German friend of ours convinced us that EuraMobil was the way to go. The HS indicates a rear U shape lounge, center kitchen and overcab double bed which is huge. The snags are that the entry has two internal steps up, and a step up from cab to habitation area so not for those with mobility issues. Cost in 2018 was £30K from a dealer.

There was a vario based RMB on mobile.de recently but I see its not there now but I suspect a lot of people will be putting adverts on hold atm.

Hopefully our current one will be best, meant to pick it up next Saturday but obviously not happening. It’s a Knaus 650 MEG platinum.
All our vans have been ideal at the time we owned them as they suited or needs at that time.

I’m hoping it’s best as it’s meant to be a quality MH only time will tell.

had 3 previous so when we collect it our new one will be our 4th.

Our new one cost more than we planned on spending but after what’s happening in the world it reminds us how fragile we all are and having money in the bank won’t save you when your times up so may as well spend it .

Loved the Bedford CF I had in 87. Elevating roof. Didn’t cost a lot, 1 careful owner, a Vicars wife. :whistle2: When the cambelt went it was so easy to replace, no damage to the engine.
Since 2016 we have had 4 vans in quick secession, that’s why it is important to do your research. Each had a different problem.
The van I have now ticks all the boxes, in length, engine size and heating. Hopefully we will keep it more then a year this time.:wine::oops:
Dan and Jan - what do you have now?

My current N&B Arto coming up 9 years ownership, the price is a bit fuzzy because p ex was involved but about £75k at 1 year old.

I had 2 previous, another Arto 6 years (I think) and an Autotrail in the nineties for 1 year.
jongood - spotted this whilst searching one (we were after bunks for the kids, but I’m sure they won’t moan at this set up lol). Don’t know enough about them and it has no oven which is probs a deal breaker for the missus
I just found a great motorhome on Auto Trader:

1 Our current(and only) one, an N&B Arto 69GL(2003). Had it 10.5 years
2 Good quality, garage, panoramic view.
3 No others
4 £27,500 at 6 years old.

I reckon I got really lucky first time round.
nicholsong - defo lucky first time around, they’re about the same price now I think??
