Delayed 4 years because of Covid , family commitments and sale of a business and tomorrow we take off for 6 weeks or so thorough Belgium , france , Austria , Germany , Italy and god knows where . The planning and preparation has been much more effort than I thought it would be but I guess subsequent journeys will only get easier . Hope to see some of you in the road !!

We planned our first trip abroad 40 years ago. We haven't planned a trip since then. We go every year and find the freedom of not booking sites or return ferries makes it so relaxing. Wouldn't now do it any other way. Not everyone likes this but possibly most do. Enjoy your trip.

We haven’t planned the route too carefully - just a rough idea but the preparation of the van and documents seems “heavy”

We (I) have a list on a spreadsheet (geek) that lists in (his/her) columns, what to take, what to do before going, what documents are needed. Reduces the process time significantly.
You probably have a similar list now that you've done it once.

Well a pretty faultless drive to Ypres today , the tunnel was bang on time and no hold ups . Going through Ypres to get to the campsite was a little interesting ( my fault - poor driving. - I was tired :) ) and we got here , Camping Jeugdstadion which was full but we had pre booked and it’s a little cramped but as soon as we pulled up the heavens opened - not a great start , also no satellite signal (trees) so it’s brave the weather and then some Netflix on the fire stick - mifi works well

The sore part we stayed on is cramped. I think the campsite area has slightly more room. Best waffles ever in town though! And the last post though it’s on the bridge just now as the Menin Gateway is being renovated.

By way of an update now in Lunéville mid east of france , this is day 4 . Been an adventure already really though I forgot how tiring driving every day can be - anyway . 2 from Ypres down the bones shaking roads of belguim to Luxembourg at Bon Accueil campsite which was fine . Free transport all around Luxembourg in immaculate trams and buses took the edge of the price of eating out . Note sod all 3g 4g or anything in that area ! . Discovered satellite dish needs a retune and number one son has prepared a USB with the update in Italy for us . Then a non motorway trip down to Lunéville which had us confronted with a 2.5m bridge - no thank you . But other wise lovely sweeping roads and bugger all traffic . Warm here . Off to Guisham (south of combat tomorrow) to a campsite so we can do a wash and have a few bbqs IMG_1148.jpeg

Meersburg today , it’s 26 degrees and sticky and the town is full , as would be expected I guess . Had to get a spot at the overflow Stellplatz with no services (isn’t an issue ) but do have the ability to spread ourselves out and put the awning up and chairs out . No view unfortunately and main road noise in the back ground but tomorrow a campsite so we can decompress and wash everything .

2 hour jaunt along the Alpenstrasse heading east from lindau . Within 20 minutes navigated some lovely hairpins whilst on a climb but the view at the end was worth it . Then to Neuschwanstein Castle which was “ok” but like most tourist attractions designed
IMG_1180.jpeg
to blows the tourists - and there were thousands . Got a last minute booking at Campingplatz Bannwaldsee as we wanted a quiet night and need to wash our smalls and not so smalls . Raining today :-(

The Alpenstrasse was beautiful

Enjoy your trip. On the planning aspect - the easiest plan is to not bother. We just have a vague overview of where we want to go. Book a outgoing ferry to Calais a day or two before we leave and that's it!

Currently on a lovely trip through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and now Bosnia on that basis.

A glorious evening sky to watch fall behind the mountains , the temperature drops , back in the moho , silver screen on , diesel heating just taking the chill off as is the rum and Coke and watching a western. Doesn’t get much better imo

Zell am see today , with a. Couple of “firsts” conquered - vignette - tick , LPG abroad - tick . No issues and a cracking non motorway route down . Staying at panorama camp - it’s fine if no a touch pricey as we are not bothering with EHU but you can only see the lake from here if you walk to it . Good views of the mountains though . Weather is glorious .24 degrees and blue skies . Might have a swim in the lake

12th day on our trip so far and today we are 1300m in the hills above Bolzano . Last night the stars were crystal bright and today is sunny and warm . Staying at camping chalet salten which is very nice - well equipped . Ironically for an Italian site there’s no Italians here , all German and Dutch apart from us

Day off driving today and tomorrow Garda

Any recommendations for a nice site in Croatia for next summer preferably on a beach.

We're not really doing Croatia this time. Been there a couple of times but not in the motorhome. I will say though, Croatia is not cheap anymore. We did find a little carpark stop for 10 euros in the mountains but by the beach I think you'll be talking UK CAMC prices.

Probably the best campsite we have been to, everything is spotless and they have a good restaurant.
I booked up a frontline pitch 12 months before.

No good for me then. The most prep we did was book Dover Calais ferry the day before we left 😀

Same as, but to get a spot at the front you have to think ahead🤔🤔

We normally get up and while having breakfast decide where to head to but after just coming back from a trip down to Switzerland and back a lot of sites were full😳😳
Never had that in September on previous trips!!

Yes of course that will happen but it's all part of the fun of travelling. E.g. We arrived at a camp here in Bosnia at 6pm last night. It was full and raining like mad. The campsite staff said just park over there for free and you are welcome to use the toilets, showers. No charge! I guess we tend to think 2 or 3 days in advance but no pre booking.

We have done all our pre booked holidays in the last 30 years. Now we are retired and have time on our hands it's great just to go with the flow!

Well at Garda now in Green Camp Bridge site and tbh I’m feeling a little insignificant . There are on the 25 or plots , 20 motor homes are 250k each . I’ll give my opinion of the site when we’ve looked around
