VPN Renewal time again!

Don't run away with the idea that all VPNs are secure. Almost a third of the world’s top VPN providers are secretly owned by six Chinese companies, a lot are based in countries with lax or non-existence privacy laws and their governments could potentially access the data. They will mask your IP from your ISP but the server you are going through will have the potential to capture that information..

I downloaded a free vpn app from Apple but it appears to take about 10 mins to get itself into action, surely this isn’t right?

I use Nord VPN and am very happy with price versus performance.

For some reason the Beeb seems very keen on preventing UK licence payers who happen to be abroad from accessing the iPlayer but are happy to take requests/shoutouts from anyone living in foreign climes.

Anyway the relevance is that the BBC will block any IP address that comes on it's radar that it believes is Geo Blocking.
So my advice FWIW is to use a VPN service which has many servers around the world so if one is blocked, you have a chance to get online with another.

Another tip is to bookmark the iPlayer site, as it sometimes doesn't appear on the BBC site if using a vpn.

Its been said before but worth saying again. :) If you have a UK sourced sim card you haven't needed to use a VPN to watch BBC for the last couple of years.

You will of course still need a VPN if you try it using a campsite WiFi or the local McDonalds - if you can find a fast enough connection.

They used to be needed if you wanted to watch BBC on iPlayer outside the UK but if you use a UK purchased sim card this isn't needed any more. :)
Spot on ?

 I personally wouldn't know as I haven't tried to use iplayer outside the UK

But using my VPN, on a UK server, in the UK, using UK landline broadband has resulted in my iplayer being geo blocked on occasion

Also useful for online banking protection at any time or location, and when using open or public WiFi, such as provided at Wetherspoons, etc. I always use a VPN in those circumstances................when on WiFi.
None of that is true any more fortunately. Check the video above. Tom explains it all pretty well. Why you might want a VPN and why you may not even need one.

For a bunch of us on here, a valid reason is to pretend to be back in the UK. But security, not so much.

Very interesting Karl. :)

As well as for accessing the BBC outside the UK, and for my banking security online (as I thought anyway), a VPN also allows me access to the Patient Access website which blocks me when using a non UK IP address. This is handy should we need to make an appointment, or pre order meds for our return..................or.................provide medical history to a medical professional abroad.

Not VPN I know, but re the online banking security, I also use Trusteer Rapport on finance websites, as recommended by the majority of major banks. Even my access to FUN is protected by Trusteer Rapport.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I've just signed up to Nord, they've got 80% off the 3 year sub £120 and went through Quidco for a £60.98 cashback, so hopefully about £60 for 3 years.

The only problem is the 80% offer runs out today

They're like DFS, as one "sale" finishes, another one starts ;).

I use UK SIM for iPlayer overseas. Comes down to cost comparison between VPN subscription and network data cost based on level of usage. Surfshack current deal at £38.16 for 24 months looks like a good deal.

Nord vpn for me. I got the 3 year deal and went via TopCashBack which had a 70% discount offer on.

Do would I be right in saying,
I have unlimited data in uk.
I am capped at 15g abroad.
If I go through vpn, I'm back to unlimited abroad ?
Can I have vpn on all the time?

Apparently the advice (comparison link above) is not to use Nord if paying by PayPal - that would kill it for me.

Sorry Sue, but your network supplier will know you are using a foreign network.
Cheers

Faultless BBC in Portugal via...

vpnify

Available in Google Playstore

Easy peasy to use, completely and totally free.

It was recommended to me by Funster Lenny HB (see above)

Doesn't the advice, vpnmentor above, specifically say not to worry re Paypal, it's a non-issue? Was there another link I've missed?

I personally wouldn't touch NordVPN with a bargepole. They were hacked and hid it for months...

Google NordVPN hacked for info.

first article.

How will they know? I thought vpn hid that?
I can select uk as source if that helps?

Happy camping.

I believe that relates to the payment for the vpn via PayPal, and the article itself states that the payment would be made via Cloudvpn using PayPal. It's a strange article given it's made Nord their preferred vpn for a whole host of reasons, says that the PayPal issue is essentially a non-issue and then puts that comment in its summary page. I made a one-off payment for it, still have 743 days left and I'm very happy with it.

I just use my Vodaphone 100 gb when abroad,,can watch all free uk tv and catch up plus Amazon Prime..BUSBY.

No as the network will be aware the sim is connected to an overseas base station, the comms network knows you are roaming, tri-Polation means you will be identifies a few feet from the actual spot your van (or mobile device is).
