Urgent….Chicken defrosting !

It's a bit late now, but it may help in the future to know that many Hymers are wired so that the fridge works from the leisure battery if switched to 12V when the engine isn't running. However you need to fit a fuse to enable that function. It's usually a 15A fuse, labelled something like 'AES/Kompressor Kuhlschrank'.

Note that the fridge will flatten the average leisure battery in a few hours, so probably not a good idea to leave it on for 7 hours. However you could leave it on for the time you are in the Hymer, during loading and unloading.
Very interesting…I had no idea and have had a Hymer for 25 years ! Mind you probably not worth it if itflattens battery after 2 hours !

Poke chicken on arrival. Still hard? all good with the world.
Chicken not hard? Re freeze it or put in fridge and eat within a couple of days.

Don’t want the headache? Don’t take food needing fridge or freezer. Buy in a continental supermarket, they just as common there as in UK (though you may be surprised by the price of fresh chicken )

Yes you can get fresh milk. You can even get passable bacon, if you know where to look.

Baked beans can be an issue, but thankfully they don’t need a fridge.

For me, the issue has always been sausages. You don’t realise how lucky we are in UK with the sheer choice until you try to find decent sausages on the continent :) - there’s nothing better than Brit sausages and even my French wife admits that.

Thankfully, sausages and bacon keep for ages even in just in a fridge (y)

Lastly, even if your chicken is defrosted and you freeze it again, it ain’t going to hurt u when you eventually come to eat it as long as u cook it properly. Worst case it might taste a bit funny.
Lot to digest there ……literally.

Stop fretting over trivial stuff.

Trivial !!! Trivial !!! £7.50 of Waitrose Organic Chicken

Life is too short.

Could be shorter if I eat the chicken

Have you tried eating 2kg of Chicken in a couple of days

More expensive even than Waitrose and looks like road kill…except Bresse Chicken and that’s more expensive than Harrods Food Hall !

Depends what you mean by passable

Can get those if you know where to look….€8 a tin !….keep mine in MH safe

Is that a euphemism ?

I keep mine in the footwell

I’ll let you know

I probably overstated the flattening thing, I think 3-way fridges use about 7A average, so that's 49Amp-hours over 7 hours. For a 100Ah battery that's almost all the usable capacity, so you get off the ferry with a depleted battery. That may be OK for some, especially if you intend a long drive that might fill them up again, or go onto an aire/campsite with hookup available.

But it's very easy to leave the fridge on leisure battery power accidentally, and overnight it will definitely flatten the batteries. However it's worth considering as an option for a ferry crossing.

what do you think ;)

Well, finally got round to cooking the Chicken…a Jalfrazi…and it was Yum….chicken here in Spain doesn’t look so good as my Waitrose breasts….but that could just be the look of it. I have to say the sausages aren’t as good either…can’t have everything…it’s sunny and 24°C 😊….

Just bought £7.50 worth of chicken breasts….frozen them. Just going on a 5.45 hour ferry plus 1.15 loading so call it 7 hours. Will my chicken defrost or should I put fridge on gas. Not even sure if you are allowed to leave gas on on a ferry 😥
Probably too late, but a good tip is to fill any free space in the freezer with freezer blocks , another is to put things in a cool bag before putting it in the freezer, both will delay defrosting a bit.

Will bear it in mind for next time…although don’t think they’ll be a next time…. I’ve learnt my lesson…nearly £7.50 down the drain 😥

The best advice?

The beens "Haricot Blanc avec sauce tomate" in french lidl aren't bad, perk them up a little with some ketchup.

Also if you ever see a NOZ, Which is a bit of a random store that sells all sorts of end of line stuff, it often has bacon in the freezer section

Ever wondered why uncooked chicken in a supermarket chiller cabinet has a use by date.
It'll be fine up to (and beyond within reason) thawed out.
The use by date is to cover the producers arse.....it doesn't mean it'll be rotten the next day.

I freeze bottles of milk which makes better use of the space than freezer blocks which are just...........umm...........freezer blocks.
How much milk do you drink ❗

Welll, the gas is definitely supposed to be turned off but nobody checks only the tunnel, so it's up to you, not that you're supposed to be taking meat with you in any case.....Just sayin.....
On the very odd occasion I have ‘forgotten’ to turn the gas off I have also ‘forgotten’ to lock the gas locker ;-)

Saw 'Urgent' from Mar 6th so decided waste of time to answer other than this.
I must admit it’s not quite so urgent now…although 2 portions of the Jalfrazi are now in the freezer so it could all resurrect itself and become urgent again…will keep you posted.

IMHO mercadona chicken breasts are superior to any we buy in UK although we can't afford to shop in Waitrose (or m&s).

They always look too big to me which smacks to me of farmed and force fed….but perhaps they are just healthy robust giant chickens…
