Urgent….Chicken defrosting !

Corn fed, pampered, free range, organic, public school educated Chicken actuallly ❗

hope it will put on a good performance when you finally come to cook and eat it whilst watching some shakespeare, you cant let the chicken down..

.

I'm very cautious about chicken and wouldn't risk it for the sake of just a couple of quid's worth. I'd leave it in the freezer at home and buy some 'over there'.
A couple of quid ❗❗️. You obviously haven’t read the thread ❗️ £7.50 of Waitrose Chicken ❗️ I would rather eat it raw than do that. Besides I’ve already brought it with me.

Well that's just a couple of quid to me. (You're not from Yorkshire are you?).
Having experienced the consequences of dodgy food I'll never again eat anything with chicken or prawns at cold buffets.
Besides you can still have it when you come home.

ferry didn’t arrive until 9.30pm at Caen…arrived at Aire at 10pm…was t gonna start cooking Chicken then…besides it was still frozen. Nice little free Aire though in Hermanville in village square. Didn’t get to bed until 2am (1am for me) and church bells woke me up clanging at 7am (6am my time)….staggered over to boulangerie for a baguette…. knackered.

Hugoman ... are you still alive?

Lots of posts on Google state that providing chicken has thawed in a refrigerator it can be safely refrozen within 2 days or the sell by date.
If it comes out of the fridge, you should not refreeze it.

If the fridge was working, the freezer would be too.

I travel with a cold box and lots of freezer blocks, in the garage - even on long journeys everything stays frozen until I get on site and power up the freezer.

If you have a large enough battery, you could run the fridge on 12v while on ferry? (depends how yours is wired - ours will run off 12v, a lot of vans will only run when engine running)
It's a bit late now, but it may help in the future to know that many Hymers are wired so that the fridge works from the leisure battery if switched to 12V when the engine isn't running. However you need to fit a fuse to enable that function. It's usually a 15A fuse, labelled something like 'AES/Kompressor Kuhlschrank'.

Note that the fridge will flatten the average leisure battery in a few hours, so probably not a good idea to leave it on for 7 hours. However you could leave it on for the time you are in the Hymer, during loading and unloading.

The best advice?

Stop fretting over trivial stuff. Life is too short.

Poke chicken on arrival. Still hard? all good with the world.
Chicken not hard? Re freeze it or put in fridge and eat within a couple of days.

Don’t want the headache? Don’t take food needing fridge or freezer. Buy in a continental supermarket, they just as common there as in UK (though you may be surprised by the price of fresh chicken )

Yes you can get fresh milk. You can even get passable bacon, if you know where to look.

Baked beans can be an issue, but thankfully they don’t need a fridge.

For me, the issue has always been sausages. You don’t realise how lucky we are in UK with the sheer choice until you try to find decent sausages on the continent :) - there’s nothing better than Brit sausages and even my French wife admits that.

Thankfully, sausages and bacon keep for ages even in just in a fridge (y)

Lastly, even if your chicken is defrosted and you freeze it again, it ain’t going to hurt u when you eventually come to eat it as long as u cook it properly. Worst case it might taste a bit funny.

Just bought £7.50 worth of chicken breasts….frozen them. Just going on a 5.45 hour ferry plus 1.15 loading so call it 7 hours. Will my chicken defrost or should I put fridge on gas. Not even sure if you are allowed to leave gas on on a ferry 😥
Welll, the gas is definitely supposed to be turned off but nobody checks only the tunnel, so it's up to you, not that you're supposed to be taking meat with you in any case.....Just sayin.....

Those two statements are the polar opposite 🙄
