Got a tyre that the van system says is under inflated. I tried to get it to 80psi using a petrol station air service but it wouldn’t beep.

I also noticed some crazing on the tyre wall. Is this an MOT failure? See pic

That’s age/light damage.

I’d replace too.

And if you are running under inflated it will put extra stress on the sidewalls, making (instantaneous) failure even more likely.

Check all your tyres for age and any signs of damage

typical of many Michelin tyres

These are photos of Michelin Cross Climate / X Climate

Ours started cracking at 3,000 miles and 18 months old roughly.

Kwik Fit and Michelin Complaints dept are a waste of time. Didn't bother with pursuing the matter as I exported the car to Spain. Kick Fit wanted the car back with them and Michelin would only allow me to claim through Kwik Fit.

They would not doubt blame the pressures or storage. Even though it was in daily use at the time.

I switched to other brands but do Like the Michelin Alpin Winters

Buy a 12v inflator that can do that pressure

I use a Ring RAC 900.. not cheap but had it for years .. best there is

That tyre was made in the third week of 2018 so it’s had its time I’m afraid. Standing still for long periods and sunlight does them no favours.
compressor? I use one of these to check them at home.

Any idea where i could get 4x new tyres at reasonable cost?
Blackcircles usually fair prices and check the garage in your area

Protyre in my area are excellent and were formally celtic tyres

Wow, I had my last set of Michelin Camping Agilis on for 10 years and not a blemish on them, in fact the rear looked like new. Like you, used regularly and kept up to 80psi at all times and shaded from the sun when not in use.

Here’s an email from Michelin asking the same question…..

Dear Eddie,

Thank you for contacting Michelin Customer Service.

On August 25, 2023, You contacted our department about the recommended tyre pressure for your motorhome.

Tyre pressure for Michelin Camping (CP) tyres for motorhomes and camping vans that are fitted with metallic valves with a single axle on the back and no twin wheels:
  • Front axle: Follow the manufacturer's tyre pressure recommendation
  • Rear axle: 5.5 bars / 80 PSI

Tips on tyre pressure:
  • Always check the pressures when the vehicle tyres are cold.(We consider the tyres being cold if they haven’t been used for at least 2 hours of it they have rolled less than 4 km at low speed. If the tyres are not under these conditions they are considered to be hot.)
  • When the tyres are hot we should always add 0.3 bars to the manufacturer recommended pressure.
  • Remember: never deflate a hot tyre!

*Please note, for any other tyre pressure recommendation please contact the car manufacturer or your dealer.

CP tyres have been developed for camping vehicles such as mobile homes and have a reinforced sub structure; CP tyres therefore have a high load bearing capacity. Due to considerably higher air pressure, CP tyres have higher load bearing capacity and at the same time, greater protection from mechanical damage. This reinforcement is done over several layers and therefore protects the tyres during a long stationary period. According to the ETRTO (2019), CP tyres are the only tyres that are allowed to have a pressure of 5,5 Bar.

For additional advice/recommendations about tyres for motorhomes, please consult our web page:

80psi seems very high. Check your tyres on the Tyresafe website
its on a Bailey sticker inside the passenger door...

50 psi front and 80 psi rear.

What is the opinion on dropping it to 70 psi rear so its not as loud when we go over bumps. Assuming we change them unconditionaly after 5 years anyway?

Best thing to do is not fit camping tyres, van tyres give a far superior ride & grip and will save you £250 on a set of 4.
If you really want CP tyres Contenatal ones are far better than Michilen.

As already advised get that tyre and the others if they are the same age and condition changed asap.
We had a Burstner Elegance with Michelin CP tyres and they perished badly too.
I used to sell cars and it was common for the Michelins to be perished for some reason.
Our Carthago has Continental 4 seasons and there's no sign of perishing in 8 years but I'll change them next year just for the sake of it.
One thing I did notice though two years ago was that the valves perished and the extension pipes at the rear as well. That's another item to check regularly not just the tyres.
This year one of the rear inside tyres had gone flat on the drive and that again was due to the extension valve/pipe perishing again. I've bought new pipes again but not fitted them, just check my tyres and pressures every trip!

Worth reading regarding inflating to lower pressure…possible different advice from alternate manufacturers.

Extract…

Overloading

Motorhomes are limited in payload. The total weight of the loaded motorhome (GVW) must not exceed 3.5t (except for vehicles classified as heavy goods vehicles). This is stated in the vehicle documents and on the outside of the driver’s door.

Overloading of the vehicle or poor load distribution may jeopardise the safety of road users. For your information, a pressure of 5.5 bar on the rear drive axle corresponds to a maximum load per tyre of 1,120 kg for a Michelin Agilis Camping 225/70R15 CP tyre. Under-inflation can be dangerous: for example, an under-pressure of 0.5 bar for a Michelin Agilis Camping 225/70R15 CP is equivalent to an overload of approximately 100 kg!

Good to know: In the event of an infringement, overloading is punished by a fixed fine depending on the excess. If the excess exceeds 5% of the GVW, the vehicle may be impounded.

I run our rears (Michelin CP) at 70 PSI.
I would like to know why Michelin state 80PSI, as the text on the side wall states that the load capacity of 116 is reached at 69PSI (475KPa).

Asked Michelin same question, here’s the reply…

Dear Eddie,

Thank you for the quick reply.

The pressure information that on the sidewall is for the USA market/norms and is not for Europe.

Since 2003, the E.T.R.T.O. (European Tire and Rim Technical Organisation) recommends labelling tyres designed to fit motorhomes with the CP marking. As motorhomes have a high centre of gravity, large overhangs, long periods immobile, CP tyres are developed according to the specific load characteristics of these vehicles, in line with the recommendations of ETRTO.

The E.T.R.T.O. specifies that in the particular case of use on a rear axle (single assembly), a pressure of 5.5 bar (80 PSI)must be systematically used instead of the usual 4.75 bar.

  • Front axle: Follow the manufacturer's tyre pressure recommendation
  • Rear axle: 5.5 bars / 80 PSI

Another vote for ring, had a puncture in Spain and easily pumped from 20psi to 72.

Asked Michelin same question, here’s the reply
Sounds like a load of crap.
So you can run the same tyre at a lower pressure in USA?
They must have different air!
Continental are happy to specify a lower pressure in their CP tyres in Europe.
They must choose to ignore the E.T.R.T.O.

Thank you all again for your comments and advise.
One last question; Do the tyre people re-use the tyre pressure widget in the replacment valve or replace it at the same time as replacing the valve, or anything else?
