Hi All

I really don't want this to go off on a tangent about rights and wrongs of the TV Licence. Just wondering if anyone cancels when they are out of the country and renews when they get back? Thanks

your welcome home will be a very large pile of letters from the licencing authority asking why you haven't got a current licence. Their systems can't cope with the idea of a temporary period of a house being unoccupied. My soon to be ex partner has been experiencing this with really run down house she bought and is gradually making habitable. She doesnt live there but gets a regular stream of letters about the water supply and the TV licence. Even calling them on the phone and explaining it's unoccupied does not stop them printing and posting more letters for long.

They can send as many letters as they please :)

And of course you will not be watching any uk tv, streaming, downloaded or via satellite during that time?😁

They even send uniformed enforcement officers to your door and question you under caution. They have the authority to issue you a court summons if you don't answer correctly . You don't have to say anything to them but can't be a pleasant experience.

I had 2 alleged enforcement officers at my door once many years ago , asked if I had a licence I simply stated I had no interest in what they were selling and no interest in answering their questions , closed the door and never saw them again. Every so often I'd get a letter which I just binned . I was in my last house nearly 6 years and never had a licence.

I'd drive into the nearest hedge if I had no option but to listen to all the adverts on commercial radio whilst driving...

At the risk of being lambasted again….

If it goes beyond letters…Visits threats etc

Then after you have made your occupancy situation clear, the licensing authority may well fall foul of harassment

S1. Prohibition of harassment Act 1970

(1)A person must not pursue a course of conduct—

(a)which amounts to harassment of another, and

(b)which he knows or ought to know amounts to harassment of the other.

(1A)A person must not pursue a course of conduct
(a)which involves harassment of two or more persons, and

(b)which he knows or ought to know involves harassment of those persons, and

(c)by which he intends to persuade any person (whether or not one of those mentioned above)—

(i)not to do something that he is entitled or required to do, or

(ii)to do something that he is not under any obligation to do.]

(2)For the purposes of this section, the person whose course of conduct is in question ought to know that it amounts to harassment of another if a reasonable person in possession of the same information would think the course of conduct amounted to harassment of the other.

Wrong.
The 'enforcement' officer is just a civilian with a badge in everyday clothes.
They have no authority to issue anything, let alone a court summons.
Just tell them to go away

As Tam Northernraider did if they come to your door ,say nothing and just close it ,it amounts to bullying and scare tactics.
It is an antiquated system and should be binned .

Deleted double post🙈

Fifteen years without one and they still send me letters. Threatening in tone and quite unpleasant, but you can simply ignore them. No one has ever been round (and they'd be welcome to as I don't watch anything that requires a licence)
