Tunnel or ferry?

Yes, I do - thanks.
If thats a current photo on your avatar, you havent had enough stress in your life !!!!

Without dog our preference (even being a nipper) is Newhaven DIeppe now.
Used to be tunnel when they had frequent traveller
Used Calais last month on ferry and will be using it in June as now going to Austria but this month it is Newhaven and must book Newhaven for September soon to get a cheaper price as the one we wanted in June wasnt available now.

Dog makes tunnel a bit of a no brainer

When you use the ferry with a dog the first waves sets the car alarms off and stresses up the dogs, that why we always used the tunnel. We travel out end of May 240 pounds ferry 399 pounds tunnel return . This time we are using ferry for first time in 9 years.
Don't have a dog but fail to understand how you can hear alarms on a ferry

Ha! No, it’s not a recent photo, I should update it.

Our first trip week Monday, tunnel as we have a dog and used some Tesco vouchers.

DFDS only give discount to one person either the driver or a disabled passenger but not both

Another vote for Irish Ferries (Dover/Calais); they were significantly cheaper than DFDS & P&O last autumn.
Also for Newhaven/Dieppe with over 60's discount (need to book by telephone); a longer crossing (4hrs) but much more relaxed at Newhaven & Dieppe harbours than Dover and Calais

Off to France, late May to early July - Bailey m/h, 2 people, one dog. It looks as though the ferry (Dover-Calais) would cost about £310 (with refundable option), and the tunnel about £400 (ditto). Tunnel strikes me as the easier option, but I’ve not done either before. Which would you do?
Tunnel. It works. Turn up, get on, get off. Easy.

Personally speaking we would always choose the tunnel as travelling with dogs is not always easy on Ferries as you either need dog friendly cabins or have to leave them in the van? Which on the short crossing to Calais is acceptable however for longer crossings we have never been able to even book a dog friendly cabin due to demand Also they will be extra expense?
tunnel so easy and stress free 40 minutes and your done😊

We have never had a problem with DFDS at Dover and Dunkirk is a doddle, with no migrants when we have travelled.

Two of us and the mutt.
Tunnel, and when you get there-Europe-get an EU pet passport, no more expensive AHCs!

We used Poole cherbourg last year and going Newhaven dieppe this. A lot will depend where you are looking to end up, if going down west side its better to cross nearer to Bristol if going east then drive to Dover is maybe better for the cheaper costs.

Do you really need the flexible option, if you're sure of travelling then economy is fine, you can change dates if needed albeit sometimes a small charge applied?

Hi.
Tunnel. Roll on,windows down a bit, side door open, dog getting a pat now and again through the door as people pass on the way to the loo. Us,sandwich, flask, roll off the other end and used to head for " Buchy " free aire, as the first stop coming home .
We stopped using Ferries when they started to charge for " Individual " Baked beans on the breakfast, plus the eggs and bacon, fried slice etc. :ROFLMAO: Instead of just loading up the plate, leaving you with just enough room on the edge of the plate for you to carry it to the table at a set price. Job was a good 'un.
Tea Bag.
PS. There were other reasons we abandoned the ferries.............

If cost does not matter, there is only the tunnel to consider. If time is important, again the tunnel canot be beaten. I am retired so cost is important, more so than time. Driving towards Spain I choose a more westerly route to Dieppe, missing out the journey from Calais to Rouen which is fine but adds to driving time and fuel cost. So with pensioners discount I think Newhaven has to be my choice.

could you explain why you say overrated Tunnel?🤔
Over rated by us.

It’s too expensive.
It’s a pain to get to for many.
It’s too far away.
Can be difficult to access when operation stack is put into place.
Not great for truckers.
Poor customer service

me ,I use dunkirk >dover. Personal choice i never use calais too many migrants about. I've used the tunnel twice only because the wife wanted to & only going from the Uk. After second time & kids frightening the wife running up & down the train. dog is far dearer using tunnel than ferry. + they lie about the reason. Tunnel is wholly french owned & seriously under funded. Prices used to be extrotionate before covid now they are ridiculous. ferry is cheaper+ I get a rest.
Ferry every time! (I use Dover-Calais Irish Ferries)

Cheaper.
I only ever use dunkirk
Not if they are on a P&O ferry they are in the dog lounge. Did you not see the photos I published?
that is why you are paying more.

That's another load I'd never use after the staff sackings.

Never mind cost and time, some people have no soul: dropping the lines on a ferry setting out with the wind in one's hair, gentle roll/pitch of the ship and the sight of the White Cliffs dropping astern, or coming into sight on the return.

If you do not have a soul for that why have a MH? ::bigsmile:

My comment referred to the time of pre dog lounges even as far back as seafrance ferries. We have not used ferries for nine or ten years. There was one ferry you could look over the railings at the stern and see the cars on the car deck. This why we changed to using the tunnel . Sadly the dog has now passed away.

DFDS still use them & what I prefer as in an emergency I can get down to get the dog out.You wouldn't leave the kids to drown & a dog is no different. & in sealed deck boats that is what could happen.

Very smooth crossing last night Hull to Rotterdam. Lovely supper and then a great night’s sleep. Arrived in Rotterdam at 08:30. Short queue at customs and onto A15 then A16 from Rotterdam, direction Breda, then Antwerp, Brussels, Charleroi and then a break for coffee near Rocroi.
After 6 hours, have arrived in Auxerre where we had a lovely meal. Great place. Stopped for the night.
