truck sat nav

Used ours for the first time today, at the same time as using our TomTom. The new machine took us away from two roads that TomTom would have taken us down. One we have been down before so know it is OK but the other one is very narrow and twisty. It seems like the machine does its job

Does this sat nav have the facility to plot a route using motorway junction numbers?

This could be very useful at times, the only one I know of that does it at the moment is the Snooper.

Mike

I can't answer your question Mike, but if that option wasn't available, but it was important to me to be leaving at a particular motorway junction number, I'd be programming that junction in as a coordinate, in my route planning.

Cheers,

Jock.

U Turns

There have been a number of posts about U turns the primo manual say the following in respect of Lorry routing rules:

U-turns are excluded from routes (turning back on a divided road is not
considered as a U-turn).

So if you use the lorry vehicle type for your motorhome u turns will not be part of any routing or recalculation.

John

Thanks for clarifying that John. :thumb:

Cheers for now,

Jock.

I think some people having set up their motorhome parameters as a truck during set up are not understanding how to change to car bicycle pedestrian etc? Go to route settings to change vehicle type and select car

In navigation select MORE
In MORE select SETTINGS
In SETTINGS select ROUTE SETTINGS
In ROUTE SETTINGS select VEHICLE
In VEHICLE select mode of transport and set up a profile

Any time you want to change your vehicle you must go into route settings again

We returned from Skipton today and deliberately ignored one routing instruction. We have used Otley Road, Killinghall (between the A59 and A61) previously in the van so knew it was OK. I did notice, though, that there is a 7.5 tonne limit on the road so perhaps that is why the sat nav routed us round it, even though the set-up is for 3.5 tonne maximum. Something for me to look into more closely.

Now that we have proved to our satisfaction that we can trust the device I'll put some more time into setting up the screen display properly.

I was also unable to select a destination by postal code. For Skipton it allows me to input BD23 1 but would not allow BD23 1UD which I wanted. Luckily I knew the street name or I should have been stuck. More research needed there as well

I have just put BD23 1UD into mine it came up with Gargave Road, Skipton. Is that right?

John

If you pess the space bar after BD23 it will then allow 1UD

Brilliant, that allows me to enter it :thumb::thumb:

Close but not quite a coconut  It's actually the Auction Mart in Ling Fields, off Gargrave Road. TomTom finds it correctly, as does Google Maps, so it looks like the post code data isn't quite up to date (I have the latest 2012.Q3 maps).

Next question. I loaded a number of sets of User POIs. I created a Userdata folder with POI and Usericon sub-folders as per instructions in a previous post. The POI sub-folder contains .kix and .kns filed for each set in addition yo the .kml file I copied across and the Usericon sub-folder contains a 2Kb .bmp file for each set. The POIs show up on the map but have a generic icon not the ones in the Usericon sub-folder. What am I doing daft that's wrong?

According to postcode finder Auction Mart Ling Fields post code is BD23 1UX and the sat nav finds it ok.

Very strange

1UD and 1UX both find places on the Auction Mart site in Google Maps. Looking on the Royal Mail web site, several businesses on the Auction Mart site have the 1UD post code and three have the 1UX post code. Flamin' Royal Mail :Laughing:

You should also have a .kst file in the POI sub-folder. Try deleting the .kix & .kns files and restarting the sat nav.

Thanks John. I've sorted it now. I hadn't included the metadata &c coding properly. I found the post which gave the details and it's OK now :thumb:

All I have to do is sort out the rest of the .kml files

That's the problem I highlighted on previous posts Graham. When in Truck or Bus mode, (default or new profile), it doesn't seem to matter what weight you programme in, the route will avoid anything at 7.5T and under. Once set as a car profile (as someone else suggested) but with Motorhome weights and parameters programmed in, it will take those routes with lower weight restrictions.
I wasn't happy about being diverted 8 x miles out of my way, to access a location 1 x mile away, because of a weight restriction which didn't apply to me.

Cheers for now,

Jock.

Maps

Can anyone let me know if maps of Romania & Bulgaria come loaded on this satnav ?

Thanks

Hi Beemer,

Yes they are on the satnav as delivered, or they were on mine.

Thanks Jock. I missed that post. I'll change the profile and see what happens to a particular route I know where there is no such restriction but it avoided when I was first testing it.

I tried changing to a car but, as I feared, it then routed me down a road I know to be unsuitable for large vehicles even though some large vehicles do use it - usually lorries whose drivers don't care or are following ordinary sat navs blindly

I've updated all the .kml files but the only bitmap image that is treated properly is my own Motorhome Parking one which I obviously created myself initially.

I have deleted and replaced the files a couple of time without it making any difference.

More experimenting required

Cracked it. The .kml and .bmp file names looked the same in Windows Explorer but were different case in some parts. I changed the names of both to ensue they were the same and it worked.

Graham, did you use the default car profile, or did you add a new one using the MH parameters as a car?

Today, I used two profiles whilstout on my deliveries. One was a new profile named Motorhome - Car, and had all the MH weights and dimensions loaded into it. That took me evrywhere I would be happy to take the MH, (L 8 x W 2.2 x H 3mtrs @ 5 Tonnes).

I then used the default Truck profile, but extended the dimensions to L 15 x W 2.5 x H 4.3mtrs @ 44 Tonnes. That tried it's best to avoid hazards and weight restrictions which I intentionally headed for on my round. It kept advising me to come back on myself at the next roundabout. In the absence of a roundabout, it twice took me into an industrial estate to turn round, approximately about a hundred metres or so before the low overhead railway bridge. At about 50 metres to go, up came a black warning sign, telling me how far I was from the bridge, along with other warning info. :thumb:

Tomorrow, I'll be using a new Truck profile named Motorhome -Truck, loaded with the same MH weights and dimensions. So far, the route planned, wants to take me over that 7.5T bridge near us, whereas last time, it didn't.

Maybe I haven't found the options yet, but I can't seem to enter different warning sounds for different hazards. And, although I know they are on the SD card, I can't seem to find my added POIs, ie, Aires and Stellplatz, etc. No doubt it's down to pilot error, ie, me, but happy to be guided by those that know the unit better than I.

Cheers for now,

Jock.

I dont think you can have different sounds for different hazards but to give an audible warning its "settings" - "Sounds and Warnings" - "Alert Point Settings" - "Audio Warning" (the 2nd one the same label)

And, although I know they are on the SD card, I can't seem to find my added POIs, ie, Aires and Stellplatz, etc. No doubt it's down to pilot error, ie, me, but happy to be guided by those that know the unit better than I

Navigate "Find Places" - "Custom Search" - select where you want to search - you will then see all the categories to search.

Hope this is clear

John

Edit - I have just looked at the sys.txt file for your setup jock. There are different spoken warnings for different alert types so if you switch them on you should get the warnings.

For those of you using TTS (Text to speech) to turn on spoken alert points as well as the instruction above in "Settings" - "Sounds and Warnings" - "TTS Pro" you need to select "Read out Alert Points"

If you turn this on tap the arrow next to the ticked box and you can listen to the individual warning messages.

There are a number of other TTS options there that may be set.

Graham, did you use the default car profile, or did you add a new one using the MH parameters as a car?(snip)
I created a new profile Jock, based on the default car but with dimensions and weight of the motorhome plus Flammable Gas freight (same settings as when it is based on the lorry profile).

The road it takes me down when based on the car but not on the lorry is the B6105, just north of Glossop in Derbyshire. That is the route we would use travelling from Middlesbrough to Glossop in the car but in a larger vehicle the sensible route is to remain on the A628 until reaching the A57 and going in that way.

The B6105 is narrow and twisting in places, some of which can be a bit hairy if you are in a car and meet a car coming the other way. I would hate to be in a large vehicle and meet another similar vehicle

I did expect some compromises depending on how the software was written but it's a little disappointing that it appears to apply the 7.5t restriction despite an actual maximum weight being lower. Of the two, I would rather avoid the Devil's Elbow and similar roads

I've just had a butchers at that road on google maps and it looks like a nice route to me, plenty of room especially for a B road.

Some parts are OK, it's just that there are some awkward spots especially on sharp bends. Add in the idiotic driving of some other road users and rather you than me in a large vehicle  I've nearly been caught head on in a car a few times by somebody coming round a blind bend on my side of the road  Just take note of the number of gaps in the stone walls where people have crashed

TTS is, I think, the only thing I can't get working so far. Does it only work if you run the unit from an SD card?

It does on mine :thumb: but you have to have the right software.
