Hi all, I have bought a new to me motorhome but its a four hour drive away. I have all the invoices etc from the dealer to prove my journey is legit.
With all the restrictions on travel due to the chinese flu, can anybody tell me if I can legally travel to collect it, as its a business transaction.
Thanks

I’ve just sold my motorhome back to the supplying dealer and they collected it. I told them it was taxed but they put trade plates on it anyway saying if they didn’t lorry drivers on the motorway waved ( ! ) at them and tried to drive them off the road. After my shocked reaction they said it was a common problem for them but the trade plates helped.
Having just lost a friend in his 50s to Covid-19, why don’t you just wait?

I think the acid test on the essential journey question is, if you were sat in a court room as a member of a jury, would you accept the long trip to collect a leisure vehicle, which you can't currently use for the intended purpose, to be reasonable?

I get the impression the OP has paid for the van, I hope not but if this is the case I wouldn't leave it there a day longer than nessecery as if the dealer goes bust he will have lost it.
If it has been paid for risking a £200 fine has got to be better than losing 10`s of thousands.

Burstner Nexxo Sovereign - not from Heart of England Motor homes is it? I was browsing/enquiring about one there and then next thing it was reserved. Odd because they told me they couldn't do anything until lockdown finishes.

Are you really buying without seeing/testing?

My dear old uncle who has just had his jab managed to justify a 40 mile round trip to Morrisons as Tesco and Asda that he lives nearly next door to doesn't sell Branston sauce

Apparently, that essential

I think you can only travel to collect a commercial vehicle as in you would need it for your work.
No. You can get your vehicle, in my case a Car, IF it's your primary mode of transport. Also if it's for business 'any vehicle' then it's classed as 'work' and so allowed.

A Burstner Nexxo Sovereign, I need to get it home as I have some extras like self levelling and a towbar etc to be put on it.
The dealer also wants it gone and the money in his bank. May wait until Feb 22nd when things may be a bit clearer.
Get it delivered, you’ll stand out like a “cobblers thumb“ on the roads and may get pulled over, not worth the risk.

There is zero Covid risk. He drives to the dealer, doesn't enter the premises, and doesn't come within 2m of anyone at any time. The discussion is purely about the legality of collecting a motorhome. I can drive to an electrical shop to collect a new TV. It's permitted. What's so different about a motorhome?

I too work in vehicle transport , driving all over the country delivering new cars from dealerships to customers with COVID safe contactless delivery. This is all perfectly legal . The car showrooms are closed except for click and collect ( which covers our operations ) AND servicing , still legal ( if you are an essential worker and you need your car then it’s legal to get it serviced / repaired )
As the showrooms are closed so are the toilets and we can’t go into peoples homes to use theirs so if you need to ‘ Go ‘ and are nowhere near a services then the hedge bottom or your own vehicle wheel is the only option !
Even my employer has closed the doors to all external workers ( Drivers like me ) so when I visit the premises and I need to go I will be doing it in their car park in view of the cctv. If I get challenged I will quote duty of care and human rights at them .

Ask the Dealer to deliver it, it may cost you, but they take the risk, or if you are desperate get the dealer to put it on a low loader but in this case you won't have a handover probably if it's a contractor ,as far as the law goes I doubt it's classed as necessary, If the dealer is in the same county ask the lawman/ get a email or letter to cover you

No Covid risk, incorrect.
Filling up with fuel, potential breakdown or accident, handover exchange with dealer, walk through the vehicle, waiting whilst tow bar and electrics are added. I know you can have most of these walking out of your front gate but there is a higher risk - certainly not no risk. Why would you want to drive to an electrical shop to buy a tv - is that an essential journey, the more people try and self justify their actions the more it impacts on others, me I just want the quickest way out of this as possible.

Filling up with fuel - automatic card machine pump, hand sanitiser, open air, no risk.
Potential breakdown - social distancing in the open air, no risk.
Handover exchange with dealer - easy to arrange social distancing in the open air, no risk.
Walk through vehicle - unnecessary anyway, but can be done by video call from outside the vehicle, so no risk.
Waiting whilst towbar and electrics added. No need to wait at dealer premises, sit in car or walk in the park, no risk.
Accident - emergency services are more aware than most of Covid risk, and less chance of accident anyway on less crowded roads, so no special Covid risk there.

When I go to the supermarket there's always some berks not wearing a mask properly, that's a lot more risk than any of the above.

As I see it, it's better for everyone if we carry on with very low risk activities to keep the economy going. No point in forgoing zero risk activities out of some misplaced solidarity with those whose livelihood has disappeared.

Anyone driving to collect anything that break covid19 lockdown rules (Unnecessary journey) is a pillock end of.

Sorry I paid £33000 for my moho on the 20th of last March lockdown was 23rd and so far used it 4 times and now its parked up catching dust.

I don't have an urge to drive it anywhere until its safe to do so.

But that's me.

So how has the dealer managed to sell it without being legally allowed to open? internet ,I suppose?
How can you physically collect it when he isn't allowed to open to actually allow you to collect it ?

They are working so are allowed. Otherwise technically nothing would be done by anyone anywhere.
Then if he is authorised to have his business open
he can deliver because he would be allowed to
as his business is authorised to function 🚐

Is this propaganda from the same HM Government that did hand-shaking with a ward of covid patients? And Cheltenham? And 'Eat out to help out'? And 'Back to work or lose your job'? And 'All be over by Christmas'? And Herd immunity? And Dido, Queen of Carnage? I'll sort out my own protection now, thanks all the same.

I’m desperate to collect a pair of reading glasses left in the van in error. The van is stored 5 miles away in a hanger in a car dealer’s premises. To get them would not entail my seeing or meeting with anyone and the dealer is open servicing vehicles.

I went right past the dealer today on the way to get my jab. Not having reading glasses is a right pain and makes ordinary but necessary tasks like paying bills on-line, ordering groceries for delivery that much harder. I’m minded to make an appointment to get them even though no one will need to meet with or even see me.

Yeh it’s early days and a learning curve of which their are still those that have the need and mindless mindset to fight the establishment and still think the world is flat.

Everyone is in the same boat currently sinking but if everyone starts bailing water the boat will not sink and soon land and hope will come.

Why would you want to drive to an electrical shop to buy a tv - is that an essential journey, the more people try and self justify their actions the more it impacts on others, me I just want the quickest way out of this as possible.

But it is perfectly legal, and hundreds of people are doing it daily. TV sales have gone up massively in lockdowns. I was reading one story in a paper that sales had increased by 60%. A lot of people stuck home watching TV I guess.

So why is that okay and legal but collecting a MH not?

You'll notice that I am not saying I think any of it is or is not right. But the question should be raised, why are TVs okay but not MHs?

It's not early days. Second wave and third lockdown...and counting. This crew ARE the establishment that produced this disaster. I'll take my advice from the WHO, epidemiologists and virologists, thanks.

And since you mention it, then yes, technically in spherical coordinates the world is locally flat.

Yes it is legit classed as essential same as having Sky installed. Tv specially these days is vital for information so buying a tv is allowed.

I can understand why there would be a large increase in TV sales but I would not on assume the increase is largely down to people actually visiting a store to browse - on-line possibly. And if in store only within a supermarket that has 'mixed retail' where your reason for the visit it to buy essential items - I do not believe a leaving your house to specifically buy a TV as a destination purchase is legal. So yes buying a motorhome within an ASDA would be fine whist you are doing your essential shop.

Opticians are open and collecting glasses from them is allowed. I think picking up needed reading glasses from a stored motorhome is reasonable. I keep my spare CPAP (sleep apnoea) in my motorhome and if I needed it I would feel justified in fetching it. However I fully agreed with my motorhome dealer that my warranty booking had to be postponed because it was not essential.

Then Curry's and PC world should not be allowed to operate click and collect TVs. But they are.
