Advice please. We are of to france spain and portugal end of march and hopefully staying the max 🤞.
we are looking for personal travel insurance, any advice would be mucho appreciated. Thanks.

Try https://www.worldwideinsure.com/
We have used them for trips to the USA and Australia, and they would cover all my wifes medical conditions. And are happy that we are not uk residents.

I dont know how they compare on price.
Thanks - they don't do cruise cover with existing medical conditions. :(

I think we will have to accept no holiday for us for quite a while. When we go away in the motorhome or in the car we are still "on duty" as far as my family are concerned and we will get calls at anytime 24/7 for the most minor issues..... "I forgot to get milk, can you pop round and get some me?" "We are 200 miles away." "Yes, but that's only 4 hours and I need milk for my tea." Being a classic.

I am retired now but used to work in the travel insurance business providing assistance medical assistance to people who got sick/injured overseas. We have our travel insurance with LV who provide 90 days cover per trip on their annual 'Premier' policy.
They are a fair and reputable insurer and provide a good level of cover. This years premium for myself and my wife has just come through at £228 for the year and includes cover for some medical conditions (the list increases year by year!!).
Be very wary of cheap cover off the likes of Moneysupermarket. With travel insurance, you definitely get what you pay for! Most annual policies only provide cover for max 31 days per trip.

Thanks so much for your excellent advice. Can't beat expert knowledge. I think a lot of us will appreciate your help.

We have Nationwide Flex Plus cover and it, and its other benefits, are very good indeed. But the travel is limited to 30 days continuous. About 60 quid extended that to 60 days for 12 months. Good cover, good people and good company in my experience.

I too am covered by Staysure as have conditions for which I take medication. All declared and no problem getting cover and I consider at a good rate.
Watch out for renewal "offers". I thought new legislation said they had to offer renewals at the same rates as they are offering to new customers. Last year worldwide with Staysure was about £600 (kidney transplant + Blood pressure etc and over 80) which was pretty good including USA. Just got renewal "offer" at £1200 which compared well with others at £1800, but still thought it a bit of a hike. Made a new application with same conditions declared and just signed up for under £800. What a game they play!

Thats strange we have just insured through them for a cruise, but only a single trip, it might be worth giving them a ring, we ended up with the Voyager plus travel insurance, which had a suplimental charge of about £30 to cover my wifes medical conditions, we are sailing to several Mediterranean countries including Morocco.

Yes, I rang them. Two of my conditions are not on their list so they can't evaluate the risk so no dice. Same as Nationwide.

I tried StaySure but at £3,000 for a 5 day trip with exclusions I said "thanks but no thanks"

I believe that was for vehicle insurance, not sure if it applies to other types too.

I just renewed our annual policy and tried the NY20 code receiving 10% discount (as it’s annual)
I would have paid the full amount if I hadn’t seen this thread so thanks guys 🙏🏻

Paid £171 for the year but when I got a quote for a week in March to Gran Canaria it was £79 😮

hi was this in France ,,Spain ,,ect,,or in the uk ,,?
Hi,
It was in the UK, sixty miles from home (Newcastle upon Tyne). We were on our way to catch the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander last January. The water pump seized on my Fiat Ducato. I was transported back to my local garage in Hexham who had it fixed within a week. Trip was rearranged for a few weeks later.

We are with staysure and have multi trip worldwide cover excluding USA, Caribbean and a couple of other places. Only limiting factor is max trip of 50 days, the premium doubled to take it to 100 days, may look again next year when we will only take out European cover as no long haul planned. We also need to look at house insurance as that is 60 days max trip I think!

Is that world wide cover?

We use Nationwide flexiplus travel insurance. It states up to 31 days or contact them. Presumably for an upgrade quote.
Most house insurances are also only for 31 days or less as well.

I had a barney with a rep from the AA once, I had car insurance and breakdown cover, I got a reminder about the insurance (which you have to have), about a week before expiry, so anyone who had forgotten just renews as they dont have enough time to search for somthing new , but they started bugging me about renewing the breakdown cover (which isn't compulsory) about 3 months before expiry

Grateful to folk for comments on here - we got annual multi trip yesterday via LV online for little more than we paid elsewhere last year for a single trip cover.

Initially I thought Staysure would come in slightly cheaper, but then realised I'd selected the wrong option (Europe excluding Cyprus, Malta, Greece, Spain etc, rather than including those countries.). What I found puzzling, though, is that changing to include those countries made relatively little difference to the basic cost of the policy, but when you then selected the option to stay up to 100 days instead of the standard 35(?) day limit, the cost went up really dramatically - far more so than when you selected extended stay on the "Europe excluding Spain etc" option. Anyone know why this should be? (I wish now I'd screenshotted the actual figures.)

Obviously it's up to companies how they price their policies, and I guess certain destinations attract more long stays than others, which may affect the pricing, but LV include all of Europe plus Turkey & Egypt for the same cost. Just seemed a bit puzzling...

Longer you are out there the higher the risk

Yes, agreed, of course it is - but the extended stay supplement for Europe including Spain, Greece,Malta, Cyprus, etc is disproportionately high compared to the supplement for Europe excluding those countries, (by a factor of several times.)

Maybe because of b word there is no longer a free medical service, I'm making that up only thinking out loud

I doubt if that’s it - France has medical charges, so does Spain. And the old EHIC has been replaced by the Global (sic) HIC, similar cover. Good try though!

Things to look out for:
  • In France you are required to have repatriation insurance, this is not always standard
  • Check the number of days permissible for each stay abroad, some have limits of say 30 to 40 days per trip
  • Check the total number of days you're allowed to spend away in total over the year, again this can be restrictive
With Nationwide you customise the cover for your needs,,We pay for 82 days MULTI trip.
I am 77 better half 71 with minor medical problems,,we pay 12 x £13 for basic policy plus I think £60 for being over 70 plus over 30 day supplement ..Think it's roughly £300 a year. BUSBY.

Have used Staysure who are probably market leaders, but last time went on website ”paying too much.com”
More options but definitely cheaper

We tried Staysure for a quote, along with other so called market leaders in specialist cover but at over £800 for 90 days too expensive.
the problem being a chronic spinal condition that seemed to top trump any other, in terms of risk.
found that Eurotunnel provided cover for a total of £300 for 90 days with very little restrictions other than GP having no objection to travel. Note, you can only arrange this at the time of booking the tunnel journey, it cannot be added afterwards.
