Travel insurance, is it worth it?

Just before going on our annual trip we checked our policy to see if it covered breakdown (I thought they always did)
it didn’t! So I took independent breakdown cover for £120.
We broke down in Portugal/Spain and were stuck there for two weeks. Had great support from the insurance phone helpline and we were then told hotel would be paid for one week at 40 euros a day. After 2 weeks we were told it was 40euros each for a week, which was good.
After we got home we were told they would cover us for two weeks. Insurance paid out this week £840,

I think it is if you have health conditions that may need hospitalisation or need to be repatriated as that can be very expensive and the GHIC does not cover everything.

I'm a bit confused by the original post. The title says travel insurance but the post talks about breakdown cover. Perhaps a little clarity from rosalan ?

In many countries, unsurprisingly, it's compulsory for foreigners to have it on entry.
Even for a weekend in France you should do it

Just like fire extinguishers and I've never heard anyone moan that they've never needed to use theirs.

I did mention breakdown insurance as the context clarified. Time was as I mentioned that I think it was included in your travel insurance additional features.
