Transit chassis recall received today

See post #26, purchased new at end of June 24. Transit MK8
Our Auto Trail is on the transit chassis, ordered spring 2023 and collected from dealers in November 2023.
I understand Auto Trail confirmed chassis availability late spring/early summer but it did not reach production line until after/just before their summer shutdown.

For other reasons I have just looked at the software in the XZENT head unit, software is version 4.1 and maps are August 2023.

We have not had a recall letter or heard from the dealers however I will check the Ford system given the info above.

Just checked mine on Ford system,

No recalls and confirmed it is a 2023 chassis (2019 model)

Interesting when the chassis were manufactured
We bought a very low mileage hobby m/h on a transit chassis first registered 13 plate the chassis left the ford factory 2007 when we found this out we got rid asap who knows where that had stood for so many years

I have put my vin no into the Ford recall system and mine says no recall
I received a recall letter, if I scan the QR code on the letter and against my vin Number it says no recalls, I rang the number on the letter and a very helpful lady from Ford said did not understand why it did not show as recall required on the Ford website, but my vehicle was on the list to be checked. Therefore to be sure I would ring the Ford number, 03456 000 006. My vehicle goes in next week
Geoff

To my untrained eye, that looks very repairable with some plates welded over the top.

For those who have invested in extras for their motorhome, that might be cheaper.

It does suck though. :-(

I thought mine was tardy! 😅

My van was registered in 2020. But it's a 2017 build.

Just rang that number. No recall. Gvt website and Ford sites also say no recall.

Does anyone have any thoughts on notifying the insurance if the chassis gets repaired/replaced? I'm guessing any recall repairs are notifiable, but I've never been in this position before.

Has anyone else had a recall notice on their Transit? Ours is a 2024 mk8 and has a recall for a skeletal chassis inspection. The letter states that Ford are aware of a small number of Transits that may have damage to the chassis. Fingers crossed ours isn't one of the affected ones.

Just a quick question do they tell you were to take the van for inspection

No, a main Ford dealer of your choice. As for remedial work, we don't know yet where that will be done. The dealership we used only appears to be a service centre, not a major/bodywork repair site.

I agree that it's a logical solution. But Ford will have to have tested an approved solution. Anything that affects the structure might have crash safety implications. I don't think Ford would be able to get anything that involves welding by hand through. Especially as they can't guarantee every fix would be done equally well.

But equally, I'm not sure how they'd replace the chassis frame. It's not a body on frame type build like you'd find on a truck. It's nearer a unibody construction. That would require spot welding in some very awkward locations.

I've no idea what the solution is going to be. Maybe a bolt on gusset or sleeve? Something that can be attached with some drilling and rivnuts? I certainly hope it's both a neat and simple solution. Or it's going to be more economical for Ford to buy people's motorhomes back.

It would be worth discussing the situation with your insurer direct because dependent omn the position they may want to categorise it as though it had been in an accident as an 'S' but repairable,This means that you would be stuck with this on the records for the life of the van & it would seriously affect the value.

Depending on what the insurers say I might be wanting them to buy it back at the price paid.

Perhaps the solution will just be to leave it as it is.
If the problem was a defect caused during manufacture, it may never cause a problem.
If however it has developed due to stress, that would be a different matter.
Realistically, replacing the chassis won't be an option.

For mine, which is part of the recall as I've had the letter from Ford, the Ford website says there are no recalls but there is a customer satisfaction program item 24B64 "Transit Skeletal Chassis Inspection", which is what the letter referred to. The website states "A CSP provides an upgrade to a specific component or perhaps a new module software update. These programs usually have a time limitation which is typically 5 years from CSP launch. Ford Motor Company will conduct repairs specifically designated in a customer satisfaction program at no cost to the owner.".

For recalls it states "A recall is an action by the Company to remedy a vehicle that has a safety-related defect or that does not meet a regulatory requirement. It may require that you return your vehicle to the dealer for service" and says that they have no time limit.

The government website says that 24B64 is a safety recall that could require Ford to buy back the vehicle. I really hope that this isn't the case as I've seen stories for other recalls from various manufacturers where people have been left out of pocket due the manufacturer only paying the market value at the time.

This is our letter

The recall note and photos suggests that the sheet metal has been kinked and folded. And that it's no longer as stiff as it should be. So, although it's safe for general use. But may be more flexible than it should be and might be stressing other components with the movement, such as the habitation part of the vehicle. And it might not perform the same as the crash safety tests implied (although with a motorhome, all bets are off anyway). Ford are legally required to do something about it.

Quick update, I chased the dealership today. They said Ford have asked for more photos taken from a specific angle. It's going back in tomorrow for another photo shoot. I hope this isn't a cop-out on Fords' part.

Same, 'No Recall' I'm thankful to report. Whilst being sympathetic to those who have to go through this recall period of course.

I received a letter from Ford last week for my Autotrail Excel 690t. It is not a recall, but a field service action which is pretty much the same thing. As my nearest Ford dealer could not accommodate the vehicle I booked it in at a Ford Transit Centre, still only 30 minutes drive from home. It had its visual inspection today and fortunately has passed. The dealer has also sent photos to Ford for their approval so hopefully that will be the end of it.The van was first registered in September 2024 having been delivered to my dealer in July and has only covered 1100 miles, so I will always have a nagging doubt that problems could develop later. The service receptionist said that only a small proportion of vehicles have been affected.
I hope JoJo and anyone else with this problem have the issue properly sorted out to their satisfaction
