Towing with an A frame - Who does this?

That's fine if you have a motorbike licence otherwise you are restricted to 50 cc which is not that good for 2 people with a combined weight of 24stone. And at 70 I don't think I'd pass let olone the theory.

On our holiday earlier this year to Spain and Portugal one large parking area/aire type stop we were at had a load of MHs on (loads of room so space not an issue) and one chap had a large flat-bed trailer for his car and scooter but the trailer didn't just sit there idly biding it's time until it was needed again, oh no, the chap had a metal framework on it about 6ft high to which fitted awning type sides and a roof covering so he could use it as a 'stand alone' safari room next to his MH.

It was a very impressive sight and seemed to work very well as we saw him sitting in it quite a lot ... no extra space was taken up for the trailer than that which he would have used for his roll out awning so if this was done on a campsite he'd still be within his pitch and if necessary could just move his car to the car park ... I do have photos but unfortunately they're at home!

Glad that you have checked the GTW but don't forget that this will be comprised of the plated maximum weight of both motorhome and TOAD./QUOTE]

The train weight is the actual weight of the combination. Provide that total is less that the Plated Gross Train Weight, then all,is ok.

Offences of overloading are based on actual weights.

You cannot exceed the GVW (without Toad).
You cannot exceed the GTW (combination).

Also, there is a common misconception that the difference between the GTW and the GVW is the towing limit.

I towed a caravan for 31 years 4 years ago we changed to a motor home and have loved it we winter in Spain and have hired cars each year. This last year we decided to tow a car and have been really pleased with the decision we pull a VW Polo on an A frame from towbars2towcars and it is phenomenal it's technically superior to anything out there and comes with a certificate of compliance recognised throughout Europe and written in 5 languages

Need to replenish the popcorn again it goes on & on;););) better than watching the telly.

We have been motorhoming for about 10 years after caravanning for about the same time. Hooked up an a frame about seven years ago and wouldn't go anywhere in the uk without my Abarth 500 convertible as it's so much fun to drive, however, have wintered in France/Spain/Portugal and not found the need to take a car as the aire system and most sites have good access to cities, towns and villages so why incur the cost of towing anything.
Cheers

Sorry but it won't be recognised in Spain, in spite of what they told you.

We tow abroad on smart-tow A-frame, never had any issues, not taking to twin lakes this year, but last year there were 8 vans towing on A-frames, including us. and the same winter in Spain, loads of a-frames at Marjal campsite, on UK motors? the police don't seem to like A-frames with the overrun system, MORE POPCORN PLEASE:D:sneaky:

I've seen folk towing a car behind a motorhome, and I have to admit I'm completely baffled as to why they do this..

Why not just get a nice comfortable car and tow a caravan?

It will KICK OFF now,,BUSBY.

Can you carry a passenger on a 50 cc scooter if you haven't passed your motorcycle test ??? BUSBY.

Think I will be going for an A frame to tow in UK - although I'll carry on with research before a final decision (don't need this until next year).

Thanks to all for your help - it's been remarkable civil :)

Now, I'm thinking of adding a wood burning stove to the back of the van This will be used in transit as well, but won't be left unattended, as the Missus will be in the back whilst travelling.

She will be on a side facing seat, so no need for a seat belt making it an easy job to stoke the fire.

Thoughts :) :) :)

If the rider passed car test prior to 1997 then under grandfather rights they can ride up to 50cc and carry passengers without requiring a cbt certificate, over 50 cc requires cbt and can't carry passengers.

I've reverted back to an A frame, tried a trailer for our Smart car but it took far too much room on the drive - even though built for a Smart - still something to park. The other pain was strapping down the vehicle onto the trailer, quite a skill! We have had the reversing problem but this was still an issue with the trailer in the situations we came across. In the past we've used the A frame through France and into Italy towing a Toyota IQ with no issues.

Sorry @Northernraider you are correct I should have checked.
But i can still remember falling of Vespa 45 years ago so I bought 650cc BSA Gold flash with a sidecar which I could drive on L plates. But wish I had taken test on motorbike.

Over the past fifty years I have been driving all over the continent in wagons, coaches, motorcycles, car and Caravan, motorhome and motorhome and trailer. Not at the same time!
Quite a few of my 'Know all' friends laughed their socks off when I purchased a trailer to tow behind my motorhome to enable me to safely transport my car. Oh how they laughed. One year a few of our friends and ourselves caught the same ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, they with their A Frames and us with the car on the trailer. I was last off the ferry and on exiting the port were all of our friends parked up on the roadside. So I stopped, thought someone had an issue. Not at all, the all had an issue. The local gun totting constabulary were issuing fines to each motorhome as A Frames are illegal in Spain. Oh how I laughed. €200 each and then their other half had to follow on behind in their car. Oh how I laughed.

I only know as been there done that lol, I tried a 50cc scooter with a previous motorhome after towing the car didn't work out, it was handy for short journeys but useless for more than a few miles as with two up on a 50cc it struggled to do 20mph.
I later did my cbt and then full license so I can now ride any size of bike and just sold my 1250cc suzuki bandit.
I'm now looking for a 125-200 cc scooter for my garage

Oops, my previous post should have looked like this:
