Toll roads

You replied to

"Will taking the duty off of petrol and putting it on mileage be fairer or just the same. The result will be paying more, although driving less is always an option with good public transport that we have here in London."

'Taking duty off fuel' and 'putting it on mileage'

I think you are confused.

Geoff
It doesn’t take much these days I’m afraid Geoff😉👍👍

Thing is that electric cars actually cost more to run in the actual fuel cost. Most of the cost of running an ICE vehicle is tax. The gov had to drop the tax on electric vehicles otherwise they would not take off. Can you imagine many people going electric if told an electric car would be twice the price and cost 5 times as much per mile to run. In the future when electric cars are taxed, they will be a lot more expensive to run than ICE are now.

Now Doms power is waning our next prime minister, Sunak, has to get talked about but paye people and pensioners will pay the bill.

I like this statement:

He said the country needed an “imaginative solution”, highlighting a proposal he made in 2017 where drivers would be given an allowance of 3,000 miles per year – or more in rural areas – free of charge, and any mile over that would be subject to a fee.

We only do about 1500 in the car and less than a 1000 in the Motorhome in the UK. 90% of our mileage in the Motorhome is over the channel.

Swmbos car had done less than 3000 when she traded it in after 4 years. Unfortunately I do about 10,000 a year though less than 1000 in the UK in the motorhome, tunnel is only 60 miles away.

All so predictable. Said for ages toll roads will be part of the way to get some dosh back.
They will create some form of method to charge the foreigners, be it booths, vignette type thing.
Leccy prices WILL go up for cash to investment to make more coal fired power stations to make more Leccy for those cars.
And, only a fraction of the monies the robbers in Downing St take from motorists actually go into improving our roads and transport system.
Like the idea of 3k miles free.

I don’t know where you have been looking, there’s more foreign trucks on our roads than ever these days, we’ve had six trucks in here last week from Germany with Lithuanian hauliers!! Theres not many U.K. trucks go abroad, have a look next time you’re abroad see how many U.K. trucks you see.
Does it matter? One reason has been cheaper fuel in Europe meant it is cheaper to deliver the goods than to transfer the load to a UK one and at some point soon the lorries will be driverless all of which affects the price we pay for the end product.

Back in the day when fuel was much cheaper in Frogland and Spain hands up those that filled their tanks at the last petrol station before getting on the choo choo or boat back home🖐

I think it will be fine.

Politically they can’t charge much more than we pay now anyway and it’s just a different way of getting the tax.

Now if only Amazon et al had the same attitude.....

Like the idea of 3000 miles free.
I have 3 cars, 1 VW Caddy Van, 1 MotorHome. 2 Motorbikes......................and some cash to buy more.
Or could they say "Per Household"?????

They are just about to start charging the for the main road that goes from my area and joins to the M25. All done on the green, emissions BS. They drop the speed limit, put speed cameras up and then lights at the end. Traffic slows emissions go up, revenue goes up. They win.

I want my Defender back 😭 the only electrics were starter motor, lights and a fuel solenoid 😍
What like this. I used to refer to it as a glorified tractor. Now, most tractors are full of bells and whistles, much quieter and more comfortable . Still, I wouldn't be without it. u

Unfortunately it doesn't get much use these days. Still keep it MOT'd taxed and insured, for those moments I think lets take the old girl out for a run.

Why not make the lowest road fund licence £50 and go up from there not going to hurt anyone and would raise a lot of cash

Charging by distance used (£/per mile) is a far fairer system than the current system of changing by time (Annual VED tax), and by fuel used (fuel tax).

It also means bigger and heavier vehicles, that use more road space and cause more damage to the road surface pay more more per mile than small and light vehicles.

Automatic tolls also mean that tolls can alter depending on the time of the day

The real reason is EE hauliers slashing rates ,paying their drivers pennies and maybe not understanding legislation 😉this also affects professional EU hauliers fuel is a cost like tyres ,insurance wages etc but not always a deal breaker. Look at EU registered trailers with Ee tractor units pulling them @

I live opposite a school.
The catchment area for the school, has recently increased from 250m to 400m
The number of parents that drive to pick up their kids is shocking.

If there was a £5 toll every time you moved you car more than 50m from your home, in cities the number of journeys would decrease markedly.

If the tax on fuel was reduced considerably, meaning petrol would be in the order of 20-30p a litre, and road licencing bought down to around £10-20 per year, then paying an average of about £1 per mile for a small car would make sense.
As long as for a small car with a low annual mileage the annual overall cost was less.

A 5 tonne, 8m tag axel would of course pay more, but you are not clocking up 20,000 miles a year in a large motorhome normally

....and don't forget gas, I'd brim that and it would last till we went back again - that's free enterprise 🌝

No, I am not happy with the privacy issue. If you buy a new car you have no choice because you can't opt out. The T&Cs allow the built-in e-Call system to send usage data to the manufacturer all the time, whether you like it or not. What is the alternative in the short term, except to buy an older used car that doesn't have the e-Call safety feature, but in the end you won't have a choice when telematics as a basis for usage tax become compulsory in every car (and by extension, MHs).

I am pointing out the high probability that road usage based tax will be needed to replace fuel duty and VAT on fuel. Whether VED will be extended to apply to EVs is another issue. Raising new taxes on electricity as a replacement is a non-starter in my view.

I thought the e-Call system was only activated in case of an accident? So, although it could be used for tracking, it doesn’t actually do that (yet). On the other hand, all those using Google Maps navigation are being tracked, and that may be true of anyone using a smartphone anywhere. It’s not strictly personal data because it’s the device that’s being monitored and no individual may be assigned to it. If big brother wants to track us, he’s got a big job on hand. I don’t (think I) have anything to hide and would have had very limited and uninteresting catalogue of movements this year.

The country needs money to run. If it doesn’t find it one way, then it’ll have to do so another. I’d much rather there be fewer and simpler methods of collecting revenue than more. Fewer systems should be easier to police and less expensive to operate.

charging by use seems fairer than banging the cost on everyone.
So those driving ice vehicles would be paying roadtax, fuel tax & toll charges whilst the Itinerants in electric cars have free top ups , no income tax to pay if used for work, & would only have o pay tolls on mileage driven? I don't think so.
Nice idea but it won’t affect the foreign trucks coming into the country with full tanks from front axle to drive axle both sides, they don’t put any fuel duty into the coffers and hammer the roads all the same!
They pay already when they arrive.S much per day, I also try not to pay for expensive fuel to the extent I can rum through France without filling.

and what about our trucks going to Europe and beyond? Should they pay for each and every county they drive through
They do now. Don't get much choice as toll roads are required unless there is a reason ,like you are delivering, for you to be off them.
That’s a bargain compared to going thru France 🙄😁😁
Never costs me anything running through France .Use N roads & rarely need fuel.
Back in the day when fuel was much cheaper in Frogland and Spain
It is still cheaper here even than Luxembourg at the moment & has been for months.

They always agonised over removing VED & putting it on fuel duty. Many people wanted them to. What people do not realise is that it would cost 23p/litre increase just to maintain the status quo.

None of us know what the final scheme will be. I just think the principle of charging by use is worth exploring. Jumping up and down about itinerants is just a diversion.

I hope they charge foreigners too then?

Might even make the hull ferry more viable for me again👍😁😁
Then again the EU will do the same so we’ll be no better off abroad🤷‍♂️😞

l believe the Hull Ferry has gone or it’s going.

By looking at the various parts of your post can i assume the following:
1. you are quite happy with your every movement being monitored and tracked, I would consider this to be an invasion of privacy in a free and democratic country
2. you are ok with being charged for your fuel (electricity for charging), road useage / tolls, and a vehicle / road tax which will certainly be re-introduced once most cars are electric and that revenue stream dries up.
Faraday cage around the box ( just thick aluminium foil) would block out radio signals...Most control tower electrics are encased in such structures to block out unwanted signals, ,,,,

But what about the windows, sort of necessary when driving !!
