Today’s drama !

I think someone should start a mag to be up front with the real faults of these so called hand built sheds.
I agree , but, I doubt whether it would survive without advertising , trouble is then we are back in the pockets of manufactuers

I just love hearing the updates about the Hymer Pig.

What a great name. :xThumb:

Well you’re going to have to wait :xdoh:
The pig spent most of the day at the dealers which gave me a few hours to pull apart and examine all the crap Motorhomes waiting for potential victims to purchase :xangry::xrofl:
I am so pleased with the results of my day :xdoh:

Yes I think eventually the buying public will wise up to the second rate manufacture and the manufacturer will suffer by way of customers walking and voting with their feet and I for one will consider heaven forbid leaving the motorhome way of life which we love so much

I think a few people on here need to consider the self build route, design you own and get someone to build it to your exact spec. All the best fixtures and fittings, granite shower tray and worktops, inch thick solid wood doors and floor hatches, full works.

All on 3500kg chassis :xwink:

surely that’s a camper not a Motorhome on a silly little chassis like that :xrofl:

Granite shower tray 20 kg, not much really, proper solid wood floor hatches, not much weight, its not all about weight but the cheap patheticness of the materials used, lets be honest you could build them much better without a huge increase in weight, the only thing stopping them doing it is MONEY not weight. Get em put together as quick and as cheap as possible with cheap labour.
I have every sympathy with @Basildog. Its gone too far towards cheap, nasty build quality and the weight smokescreen is a complete red herring.

Compare a 1990,s Hymer for example to one from today, so much better build but still 3500kg

HYMER PIG update
Well the workshop boys have really stepped up their game or it’s April fools day :xdoh:
So in their wisdom they have sprayed the lower door catch with some form of industrial strength toffee sauce :xdoh:
Result the fookin bottom catch is now as sticky as fly paper so jams :xdoh:

Our motorhome experience to date.

Elddis Autoquest 320 decent motorhome for the money. No major problems but not particularly exciting.

Swift Royale. No problems at all. Recalled by Swift at two years old as some had suffered from water ingress at the swan neck (not ours). Collected by Swift, roof sealing renewed and returned with the previous two years “updates” fitted at no cost in compensation for loss of use.

Autosleeper Ravenna. Always wanted an A/S as considered to be good quality. Had 5 gas leaks, in different places, in a three month period. Lost confidence. Not the “quality” product I thought they were.

Traded in for a Swift Gazelle, (one of the last in the production run”).
, after 14 months. Lovely m/h. No problems experienced.

Traded in Gazelle for pre-owned caravan and cash in order to buy property in France.

Eight years later decided to try a return to motorhoming. Bought an 8 year old Siwift Sundance just to “get a toe back in the water”. Found it had the “rotten floor” syndrome. Repaired by dealer, under warranty.

Confirmed we preferred motorhoming to Caravanning so traded in for Swift Esprit with fixed bed. Ideal layout but over 3.5tonne. Absolutely no problems.

After 2 years, on approaching 70th Birthday, decided to “downsize” as Mrs. Maison didn’t like driving the coachbuilt. Traded for Swift Select PVC November, 2017. Since then covered 12500 miles with only two problems. Gas bottle locker door catch screws too short to hold door fully shut, and a Fridge problem. New screws fixed gas locker, software update has fixed Fridge fault. This one we will keep.

You will notice the “British” theme. Swifts bought because of the lack of problems . It’s not that we don’t like Continental units quality, but we haven’t found a layout that suits us. There are some very nice looking Continental m/hs but layout is all important to us.

It is becoming more and more obvious that all motorhome manufacturers have problems. Continental as well as British.

The above history covers some 47 years, so not as many changes as first appears.

Envy. A terrible affliction.:xgrin:
Hi there Dotties,
Envy eh, you’ve gotta be joking, I had one, the so called Flagship of Auto-trail, the
Grande Frontier, worst van I’ve ever owned, leaked like a sieve, would never buy another A-T, Oh, and whilst I am on the subject, every A-T owner I’ ever spoken to has had leaks in one place or another, even on brand new models, but they’ re fabulous vans whilst they own them, then they see the light and end up changing, then they admit,”the biggest heap of sh*te I’ve ever had”, envy, definitely not mate, wouldn’t have one as a gift.

Had mine, a Dakota, for four years (second hand, or as I prefer pre loved:D), now.
Admittedly, it’s my first so I’ve nothing to compare with, but up to this point I’ve been very pleased with it. Sod’s law says.......
No damp, or as some have had, a river runs through it, and other than base servicing has been a good van.
I do appreciate that there a lot of A Ts out there that haven’t been the best, but this one suits us.
Geoff

i always carry thick piano wire and make replacement springs myself repaired my door very quickly and still going strong.

Have to agree with the Grand Frontier being a spectacular pile of crap !
Glad I didn’t have one but I know someone who did :xrofl:

Are you persevering with the pig @Basildog or planning to swap it in the near future?

The Pig has now got a nice little list of presents that are being lovingly crafted to order :xrofl: by HYMER hopefully for delivery sometime in the next year or two :xangry:

Great to see you are sticking with it, essentially a good van and you may get water ingress but it wont do any lasting damage which is the main thing.

Must need our heads looking at spending the amount of money we do on an F.O.F

Yep, agreed , you're mad.:xgrin: We've looked around a few new Hymers recently on our travels and I'm still trying to establish why Hymer vans are so expensive.

We've not been in a van yet that deserves the price tag (IMO, that is).

Good luck with the Pig :xThumb:

Check out the new 2019 Swift kontiki prices if you want a good laugh :xrofl:

I saw them on Tuesday at Brownhills. If I recall correctly thr forecourt price was £97K for the new 9m van.

Which Hymer in your opinion would equate to the 9m-long Swift and how much would it cost.

Our Hymer Starline is looking after us well here in USA after 5 months and 15,000 miles .It's the unseen quality build I notice over the years.Still got silly things to fix and those are standard fittings in the industry such as blinds, etc.
All the campers here comment on the quality compared to theirs but American built do seem poor worse than our options .
