Thinking of buying an RV?

Only had issues once and that was on a private site in Cambridge, booked a lake front pitch only to be told that my van is to big when arriving!!
Said to the chap check your emails as I gave my van size when booking and I’m not driving back home…
Next thing he says is you can park up on the field part if you can get through the gate, mate you have caravans in there and a lot of them are 8ft wide like me so pretty sure I can get through🤔🤔
He then directed me to park next to a tag axle van longer than us that also had a toad on the back🤬🤬

Bit of Karma a bit later on as he got over run with “as you likeys“ and they had to shut the site down!

Done a fair few of the club sites and have always had a friendly welcome and nice time, maybe just lucky with that😁😁

Driven around Devon and Cornwall many times over the years, some roads are very narrow but if I have met someone coming the other way, we have always got passed each other somehow.
But you don't just blindly drive down any road you come across.
If the satnav says turn left/right and I don't like the look of it I keep going.

Heard and read that one loads of times but I don't buy it really, personally I wouldn't want my RV as scratched up as your average council recycle truck;)
Probably right! The LA's do employ some pretty crappy drivers.

We had similar at Burnham on sea Haven. We would have spent the whole weekend eating and drinking (a lot lol) on the site. Wildcamped in town instead, and had a great time. They missed out on so much money, in the nervous post-covid times.

And I'll never go again.

Those RV's are built for American roads & campsites. Not British ones . IMHO, 9M length on British roads for RV's / Motorhomes should be more than enough for anyone. Not jealousy - just practicality and the acceptance that this is not America.
I would say live and let live, who are we to tell other people what would be enough, if anyone wants to convert a 13/16/18 metre, why not, there is always a space out there just for you😎😎👍

So why aren't you tenting? After all a tent on your back and a stout pair of shoes should be enough for anyone.

I quite agree with "live and let live" but we all tend to look at other peoples life choices through our own eyes and requirements, some people might think our van is too big to use sensibly but for us it gives us just what we want in the smallest possible package, we know people with van much bigger than ours and wouldn't go there personally but as long as it fit's their criteria it is not up to us.

I have just made on offer on something around 8.5 metre long, I accept that there will always be places where we would have trouble but there are also places where a 6 metre van would be difficult, also not everyone’s driving skills are the same, I have a lot of class 1 and class 2 HGV experience and not from the motorway variety, so I am used to very big vehicles with sometimes less than an inch of space, but I can completely understand that people get nervous about driving bigger vehicles, driving a big MH is a big step up from most peoples car👍

A quality bit of kit I trust ;) I get the impression that you have a hankering for a truck based MH, I have no HGV experience but manage to get our 8.7 metres where I want it and usually with a couple of inches to spare.

Good luck with the offer.

Gosh it looks like you are well informed lol😇, I think we are ( nearly ) there.
Yes as you say, you get used to the size of the vehicle quick enough, you just need to get to grips with overhang, turning circle etc, if you don’t anticipate the back end swinging out you get into trouble real quick lol👍

A box? a box? when we were kids, we lived in a muddy hole in the middle of the road, you must have been posh lol

I’m intrigued now 😏

Thinking about my old damon....the race trailer I used to pull with it was longer than my current motorhome 🤣🤣

So is the real problem people or perception of a problem?

As I've heard before, if a dust cart can get there a RV can; but, it is a problem if the dust cart is coming in the other direction....

Is it really that big, some people just see big differently......

If you can plan and drive the world can be your oyster....

As we're all different......I loved our RV; but the missus said it had to go so....... such is life but I still get a cuddle 👍🏼

We have towed a Fifthwheel around for the last 7 years (just sold it) not really had any problems, but on one CCC site when I was setting up warden comes along and said what’s the real size I told him 7.6m, we set of walking and realised I had forgot my phone and went back guess who was there measuring the length I just burst out laughing as it was 7.6m.

So what your saying in effect is all vehicles over 9 m should it be on the uk highway as there to big ? 🤔🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ So that's all the LGV. Vehicles gone then 🤦‍♂️

ASFAICS the only issue with having an RV/larger motorhome is that you need to choose more carefully where you go to. Ive had years of slotting Artics down dubious lanes, just needs a bit of care.

Yes I agree with Peter and Julie , 1st judgement is does it look OK, 2nd, are there Wheely Bins or Bus Stops, 3, has someone you trust assured you its ok, 4 park it up and have a look.

That’s the one😉👍
Well done (y) cracking van.

We are very excited as you can imagine , it might be old , but it looks very well sorted , ticks most of our boxes, and the old clou’s have a good reputation, we got the impression that it has always been looked after very well, and we hope that it will brings us a lot of joy for a long time to come👍

Yes I would say very well looked after, no expense spared when our friends had it before Andy, then I am sure you know his background now so no worries there, old N+B are certainly well screwed together as jongood will tell you ;)

I read through all the old threads on here, great facility, it gives you a nice timeline of things, and yes I did the threads of everything with the word Clou in it, so I know about jongood Clou, very very nice indeed👍
