The Marrakesh Express

Day 16 to Morocco.
A long drive down to Monsaraz for our next stop. Beautiful old town within the castle walls with stunning views from the ramparts.
We booked an evening meal in the highly recommended Os Amigos restaurant - the food was excellent but the service was a bit rushed. The local wine made amends though!
A must see if you are in the area

Days 17 & 18 to Morocco.
Day 17 - we drove across Portugal to its west coast and found a great campsite at Zambujeira do Mar. Lots of choice of pitches, great facilities including a heated indoor pool, a bar/ cafe / restaurant and a site shop. It's 17 euros a day with ACSI discount and only 350 metres from the beaches, although one is only accessible via steep steps and the other is at the bottom of a steep hill. In 18 days of travelling, we have only spent 4 days on "proper" campsites, but needs must as we have a lot of laundry to do.
Day 18 will be devoted to doing the laundry, cleaning the inside of the van (still to find a car wash big enough to do the outside) and walking the dogs on the beach. And waiting for yet another forecasted storm to arrive ☹️

You may find motorhome wash places with a gantry at some motorway services, certainly I found some in Spain, failing that I'm pretty sure you'll find some lads that will wash it for you in Morocco for a small fee.

I looked at a couple of potential wash sites but they had overhead gantries and they were all too low.
In a way I'm glad I haven't wasted any money on washing it anyway as all we have done is drive into different storms! As I sit typing this and drinking a bottle of Super Bock stout, a gale force wind and rain squall are whistling past the windows ☹️🌬️⚡

So you saved money for more Super Bock, seems a good deal to me.

There's a private menagerie at Carvalhal, you can park upon the road next to. I think it's owned by of the massive produce suppliers locally.
Mike.

Day 19 to Morocco.
A short drive today to Alvor on the Algarve. We are on another campsite as the aire we were going to use closed for good earlier this week. Not surprisingly, this campsite is full. There are no fixed pitches - it's a lottery to find a space so we drove around twice before spotting a vacant area. Others who arrived after us haven't been so lucky. Lots of long-termers who try to occupy as much ground as possible by arranging furniture and fittings far from their vans, but as the site is unregulated they get away with it. Booked in for 2 days but may stay for longer as the weekend looms.

Day 20 to Morocco.
Great news today! A vets in Algeciras that we have been dealing with contacted us today asking for photographic evidence of the rabies booster jabs that our dogs had 17 days ago. We sent them photos of their respective passports showing the history of their rabies jabs to date and they got back to us saying that all was in order and they could do the titer tests on Monday! That's knocked a whole 10 days off of our waiting time and, as an added bonus, told us that they could get the titer certificates back to us within 7-10 working days 😁
So now we have to get to Algeciras by Sunday night - not a long haul but we will split it into 2 legs.
Has anyone stayed on the aire by the marina just outside Gibraltar recently? Was it full? That's were we are aiming for. Morocco has just got a whole lot closer 👍
Oh - and today's pictures taken in and around Alvor.
This is for sale on the campsite we are staying on.

Day 21 to Morocco.
Making our way from Alvor to Algeciras so the dogs can have their titer tests done on Monday, we stopped off at the free aire at Palma del Condado, just off the motorway. Expecting to be the only ones there, imagine our surprise at finding 24 other motorhomes already parked up in the 17 available spaces!
It's a great stop over and another 5 vans have arrived since we got here. There are 2 tiers - the top one hosts the most vans but does slope a bit, the lower one, that we are on, is nice and level. Even with 29 motorhomes on there is still room for more. It has 2 service bays with drinking water and black and grey waste disposal points. There is a big open space around the aire, ideal for dog walking, a Mercado supermarket less than a 5 mins walk away and a lovely town to explore. Not so much a hidden gem - just a gem 👍 Recommended.

As for the Gibraltar port aire there will always be space as they’ve opened up another big section and loads of room…👍🏼☀️😎
That's good news - thanks 👍

That is a brilliant campsite .One of our favourites

Day 22 to Morocco.
Posted a day late due to a late night drinking session in La Linea's many bars with a couple we met in the cafe / restaurant / bar on the marina. They have their yacht moored there.
Had a walk into Gibraltar, had a super roast beef Sunday lunch and got chatting to an English couple who live in the Loire Valley region of France. They have very kindly invited us to stay with them on our way back home. An offer we can't refuse at a price that's right (free)!

Day 23 to Morocco.
As I type this post we are sitting out yet another storm on a large, flat and free "holding area" for Morocco bound travellers. It is just around the corner from Carlos The Ticket Man's office, very close to a huge Carrefour hypermarket and a goodly selection of restaurants and fast food emporiums. We took the dogs to the vets in Los Barrios to get their serology blood samples taken and the plan was to then decamp to Tarifa, but the weather has been so atrocious today, with many local roads flooded, that we decided to stay put. The weather forecast looks more promising for tomorrow ☀️👍

Day 24 to Morocco.
A short drive to the aire in Tarifa town. It's a 5 mins walk to the beach, and a nice flat walk into town, which has a good choice of bars and restaurants. We really do like this place - it's got a great "vibe" to it and is a wonderful place to chill out. We stopped at a lovely beach bar on our way back from town and ended up staying for nearly 2 hours, watching the sail boarders doing their thing and the sun setting over Morocco.
