There was some mention in the pub last night that prior to the tree being felled, that someone had painted some "lines" around the trunk. I checked on the pic my son sent me on the morning of the incident (taken from an arb site) and there may indeed be some markings (cut here ?) or they may just be lichen growths ?
Doing my best "jumping to conclusions" process, I reckon someone has gone and marked the tree and then got the youngster to "cut along the dotted lines" ?
As mentioned by others, the hinge cut is non existent and there does appear to be a rudimentary "gob" cut to fell the tree away from the wall, but it, along with the poor hinge and the high winds acting against a fully leafed tree conspired to topple it backwards onto the wall ?
