The Blast From the Past Thread.

Views of Rotherham,
1. Doncaster Gate hospital - no longer there.
2. Typical miners bath time.
3. Waiting for the bus to Sheffield.
4. Town centre - now a pedestrian precinct and largely deserted.

LHD Sherpa conversion from the 70s bought in the early 90s when living in France for a few years.

Used most weekends across France (including a winter trip to Champagne region in -10°), almost entirely on beautiful, free stopovers, devoid of other campers!

Sold (for a profit) when I returned to UK 'cos, even then, it was too troublesome to find overnight places in Blighty...

The beautiful solid wood interior meant it may have been slightly over-weight.
I don't miss having to jump up out of my seat to get the brakes to work, or the need to 'take a run at it' when approaching any hill...

Not sure why it took me almost 30 years to find a replacement.

My summer vacation job in 1970 was working for Alpine RefrigeratedDeliveries[ARD] the delivery arm of Lyons Maid. I delivered Lyons Maid ice creams and Findus Frozen Foods to shops, Cafés, restaurants, works canteens and the various messes on military bases. My area covered Co. Durham and the old North Yorkshire, up to but not including Sunderland, down to but not including York, across to but not including Scarborough and west to places like Askrigg and St.John's Chapel, a different route on each week day. I started off on a rather battered KPW 921E before driving the Austin MGH 967D, no HGV in those days so I could drive the 7.5 tonnes lorries all with crash gearboxes, mastery of double-de clutching was essential. During the summer days the heat coming off the engine, which was next to you in

the cab, was substantial, fully loaded struggling up Sutton Bank eastward to Pickering was an experience to behold!

With some of the money earned driving for Lyons Maid in the summer of 1970 I bought my first car a Wolseley 15/50[leather seats and trafficators], here outside St. George's Church, a Saxon Church near

Trying to impress the future Mrs. Cooke I suggested we go for a spin in my new mode of transport, would she like to visit Blackpool as she had never been there – it was only 120 miles away. In June 1971 we set out for Blackpool. I tried to impress her again by somehow winning a purple Teddy Bear at the Fun Fair[it does not look purple in this B/W photo], then a street photographer offered to take our pictures[with the Teddy]. He gave me his card and I said I'd send him a cheque. Once at home I sent him a cheque and he duly returned two B/W photographs, the strange thing is he never cashed my cheque. The Teddy, named Dinsdale after our local railway station, survived many

years until he lost most of his stuffing!
