Thanks to all who advised Newhaven ferry

Just booked Dieppe to Newhaven return from 28/3 until 20/4 with 2 adults , 1 dog and a 7.5m Moho was £260 return, £110 less than tunnel plus less driving and £350 cheaper than Caen to Portsmouth. Did this route last year and was ok and easy for us visiting family on south coast from our home in southern Spain and will make a nice trip up through France again
I’ve never thought about this route despite having family nearby. How does it work with the dog onboard?

Dog stays in the van, which is locked while you go up on deck, your look at circa 5 hours on his own in the van, we shut the blinds, turn the music on and leave him With his toys and a snack and water. You can go down if you ask to check but our view is he better left alone than disturbing half way through the journey

Booked on this very route this Friday night. 8.8m tag axle MoHo 2 adults and a cabin both ways £257 return, slightly cheaper than the tunnel but we save time and money on the drive the other side

Is that single or return and what time of year as I could not find that price realise 20% off.
I'm out on the 15/5 back 1/7 £160.40 return. 4mx7m van. Out 5pm-10 pm, return 12pm - 3pm.

sltgapper See my post #24 here:
We've been Newhaven - Dieppe with the dog several times.
The dog stays in the vehicle and you go up to the passenger areas. Car deck access is locked at departure. You can only visit the dog very briefly by special arrangement at the Info/Recept desk once aboard. You can't take the dog out of the vehicle. A crew person has to accompany you to the dog. We found that our dog (a Westie, 12 yrs old now), fared better unvisited.
Bear in mind that with the loading etc the dog will be on its own for maybe 5 hours and there are a lot of noises; lorry engines, ramps clanking and creaking, ship's equipment warning dee-daahs going off etc. My son leaves his dog in his caravan with the blinds closed.

Tam stayed in the van with the dogs.
That's interesting Lenny HB . Did Tam 'hide' in the van? In all the many crossings I've made I'd no idea that was permitted. The T&C's say that visits to the dog must be arranged when on board and accompanied by a crew member. I guess one would be trapped on the car deck if the ship was in danger of sinking. (That's also been a worry to me if it was just the dog in the van).

He hid.

Just booked my crossing for Feb, well worth it, with a cabin it's still cheaper than Dover Calais. :giggle:

Return, booked it today. Late June. You have to ask for the 20% off at time of booking on the phone. Phone answered in French but passed on to English speaker, very helpful.
Who/what qualifies for the 20% discount?

Who/what qualifies for the 20% discount?
If the person making the booking is over 60 all passengers on the ticket get the discount (not on cabins), plus registered disabled persons and students. You must book by phone - not available online.

Hi Lenny how do you get the discount on the Newhaven ferry ? I have just booked a return ticket for 23rd April via C.M.C for £242.10 which was cheaper than booking online ?

You must book with DFDS by phone:
0330 5878787
You can find the regular cost by making a 'what if' booking online then book by phone to get the wrinklies discount.
The downside of booking via CAMC (apart from the cost as CAMC don't give the 20% discount) is that the CAMC cannot be reached by phone out of office hours or at weekends to make any changes.

To make changes your DFDS booking the number is:
0344 8486090

I’m about to book our summer crossing and Newhaven Dieppe is working out the cheapest route if all operators through CAMC with their discount. We’ve travelled with them a few times and it’s been excellent. It’s same distance for us as going from Dover but need to work in a route to avoid the M25 which was hell.

The last time I arrived in Dieppe I used the aire by the port and ended up moving at 1am due to gangs of immigrants creeping between vans and trying handles and bike racks. We watched them hiding in the bushes whenever anyone came out. Has anyone experienced anything like this recently at Dieppe? I know most port aires have similar issues.

The chap I spoke to was very helpful, he told me that the driver has to be over 60 to qualify for the discount, so if the passengers are under 60 you still get it.
I've just booked my return journey in March via Roscoff with Brittany Ferries. No discount via the CC club, their website directs you straight to Brittany ferries website. Offer on at the moment flex fare is the same as the standard. Could have got a cheaper crossing via Dover or the tunnel but as I live an hour from Plymouth it saves on the half day drive to get home, and less fuel.

I'm a CAMC member (for their CLs) and have found them dearer than a 20% discounted DFDS phone booking.
I've not stayed on the aire adjacent to the port but always at the large and popular one in town on the prom and not had any immigrant issues.

I understand that provision is made for foot passengers to take there dog on the upper deck of this ferry. So maybe one of the motorhome passengers could book as a foot passenger. This of couse could be hearsay.

I've used that crossing probably at least twice a year for the past 20 years and never seen a dog carried or on a lead on deck.

Edit - Out of interest and as it would suit me I've just spoken with DFDS who said that foot passengers' dogs must go in the ship's kennels and you must book by phone to check if a kennel is available.

I have read somewhere that this crossing does not take foot passengers but I could be wrong.

When we were there in September the Aire was full so we parked in the layby on the roundabout between the Aire and the Ferry with no problem. Walked into Dieppe to eat and walked back around 10 and didn't see any skulkers.

We are hopefully going this way instead of Dover. Are you allowed to overnight near the harbour as we will be travelling down the day before catching the ferry.
In car park £5 when I went to pay told as booked on next day ferry no charge

When we had our dogs and used Newhaven we just stayed the van until the doors started closing having given the dogs a good walk they would just lay on the bed and snooze before we left to go on deck. Found it was better not to visit them during the crossing as as soon as we appeared the dogs would assume we were going. They are in the van all night when we are on holiday so 5 hours doesn’t hurt no ideal but they get the benefit of coming on holiday with us rather than kennels

Thanks Spriddler & ChrisSue i think I’ll book the crossing that arrives late evening and stay on the aire then.

I’ve got a while until I can qualify for the wrinklies discount so dont you all go applying for it. Otherwise they may ho bust with all the money they’re knocking off before I can claim it! 🤣👍

You need to get out in deck more as they apparently have kennels and pee stations they also mention to clean up after your dog in their literature on google!🙂 thanks for info you posted on

Hmm, well I like to spend most of the crossings on deck as I'm an ex-sailor and like to watch the other ships and make sure it's going the right way. Besides, I can have a fag out there.
I've never seen a dog aboard so maybe the kennels and exercise area isn't on a deck but inside.

We had never considered Newhaven as a crossing to France until a couple of earlier threads hinted at a few advantages. Anyway, we always used the tunnel or Dover. After finding their phone number which was not obvious and is in France, we settled our crossing without any problems. Being now very old ie over 60, we got a price to beat our expectations with 20% off. Had we been less than 7M it would have been £160. Thank you for telling us of Newhaven.
I’d like to wind the clock back to 60! 🥴
