Tam & co the great winter escape

Wonder if it's got an MOT, or the Greek equivalent? ;)
When we lived in Greece and I think it's still the same now, mot was every two years. Once took a small oil tanker(built onto the back of a Ford ranger) for a test knowing the left indicator was out at the rear. The guy told me to drive onto the rolling road go upto 30kph and then brake hard, which I did. He the signaled me to drive off and gave me a pass certificate.. Hmmmmm.

I don't want to start a thread drift but It does make one wonder why 'refugee's' would bypass Europe to come to the UK sometimes? Ready made houses and an opportunity to start a new community surrounded by ones own countryman & women?
There are many of these abandoned villages in Greece it's usually because an earthquake has destroyed the power and water supplies and no one (especially the utility companies) will repair or renew them. You often find a single family living there in very 3rd world conditions acting as the village guardian.

Any idea why it was abandoned?
It must feel creepy. Walking through the streets, in and out of empty houses. Are they still furnished ? Full of people's dead hopes and dreams maybe....

If the nearest test station is more than 50km away there is no requirement to have a test, so there are a lot of islands and some places on the mainland where vehicles are not tested at all, including two places where we visited this summer.

It's some beautiful and rugged countryside around there for sure Tam. The pictures are lovely, thanks for sharing them.
The dogs appear to be a happy pack but Milo must win all the prizes in the charm stakes.
Keep traveling and enjoying. Wishing you all a happy and fulfilling new year.

I love he scenery down here ....the weather is a bit wild though . Kind of like the Scottish highlands although unlike what my polar steps is showing it has been quite warm 17 -20° and while there has been a few heavy showers its mostly been dry too .... sunny and cloudy mixed.

Dogs all get on well together , ela can be a bit clumsy and not realise her own strength at times so poor milo has to tell her off often as she can be a bit rough.but they mostly sort it out themselves.

We have stopped at kotronas now for tonight parked up on the marina ...i couldn't stop here last year as it was wild but weather isnt bad today ...quite warm and with sunny spells .no rain at all today so far .

Is Ela back off the lead again Tam?

Is Ela back off the lead again Tam?
Hmmm well she was yesterday but i had a pure nightmare getting her in the van again ...she sat out im the rain for a good half hour before we finally got hold of her .its weird its like a switch flicks sometimes and shes back to how she was when i first met her , timid scared and wont come close enough.

I think i need to get her back on the lead way before i get near the van as she seems absolutely fine going in and out the van on the lead she jumps in first

But off the lead she wont go in its like she's scared.

That is a shame you are having problems getting Ela in Tam.
I think your plan of getting her back on the lead way, away from the van is a good one.I would add to that when ever you put her on the lead give her a treat (it need only be quite tiny but very tasty). And again whenever you take her in the van.
If you are on the beach try and make a game of putting her on tbe lead( using treats like liver or hard cheese but also including a tug toy or squeaky ball then let her go again and repeat.
It may be/wil be time consuming but the idea is that going on the lead does not necessarily signal to her the end of her freedom and fun.
You will probably need to teach her how to play with balls and tug toys, it won't come naturally but is well worth the effort as it will increase the relationship and bond between you. A tug toy (can be just a bit of knotted rope) is better than a ball for this Good luck Tam, be patient, she is worth it.

Its not getting her on the lead thats the problem really she's much better with that. Its just getting her to go in the van without the lead. So if we are somewhere that ive not had them on the lead jade and milo will jump straight in but ela seems scared to go in.

I already have her playing with a tug toy as i sleep with one under my pillow now otherwise i get chewed first thing in the morning...

Well, it takes all sorts Tam! I never once imagined you sleeping with a tug toy under your pillow! NOW THAT IS KINKY!!!!!
Its that or my ears nose and fingers get chewed by a rather large bored puppy first thing in the morning

Ok, next solution. Get her 3 or 4 squeaky toys, get her used to playing really exciting games chasing and killing them.
Keep them stored in a pocket in the hab door.
Each time you approach grab a squeaky toy and have a short, frenzied game with it ending with Ela being allowed to catch and worry it.
The ultimate goal is you sling it in the door and Ela dives in after it to "jackpot" of rewards..
Reality is : you have no idea what has happened to this little dog in its life before you, what horrors and beatings may have happened to her.
All you can do is love her lots and show her undying patience to match the undying love she will give you.
She wasn't born scared- some human moron made her that way!

Count your blessings that it's just in the morning Tam ... Minky likes chomping on my hands at any time but fortunately she has learned not to bite too hard now so I still have all my digits! :giggle:

Yep im aware of that 😁 and we will get there in time ...she will learn like the other 2 that she's landed on her feet and no one is going to hurt her here. ....not while im around anyway.

P.s she seems to be scared of squeeky toys ....and me sneezing apparently. Both result in her hiding in the cab

Oh she does it at other times too but i just stick either her own paw or her tail in her mouth and she soon realises it hurts 😁

Yeah, Minky ni bbles them without encouragement and seems to especially like biting her nails! :giggle:

Another useful toy is a "squeaky" toy secured to an 8 or10 foot length of cord, which in turn is attached to a fishing pole or stick cut from a tree or hedge, (do they have such things in Greece)?
The whole thing resembling a very basic fishing set-up.
Your job is to use the rod and line to cause the squeaky toy to move erratically along the ground, twitching and hopping past Ela. Her job is to catch and kill that squeaky toy.
In theory all this is done at ground level, but it is hard to contain ones enthusiasm as the squeaky is twitched and leaps away from death's jaws (aka Milo or Jade).
You will need to have great skill to play this with all three dogs joining in. The idea of keeping it at ground level is that the dogs don't get injured jumping, twisting and crashing into each-other in mid-air
When being hotly pursued by Ela, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the "squeaky" suddenly leap in through the hab doorway!

Hmm, being afraid of a squeaky could slow things down somewhat. but all things are still possible.
I once had a "rescue" Irish Setter that was terrified of walking on bare "lino" floors and would turn into a quivering heap if he heard a baby cry on the radio or tv.
He came from a "home" with young children......fill in the gaps.
I'm always a bit wary of seeing collies and terriers playing too enthusiastically with squeaky toys
