Tam and Toby ~~ Hunting Zorba .....Take two.

I wouldn’t go any further till you’ve spoken with the man you spoke to originally.
Ask him to confirm that he is the owner and the seller, and the deal is with him and nobody els.
Also ask him to confirm the deal, that is half now and rest on delivery.
If he baulks at any of that,or if you smell a rat,get out of it pronto.

There will be other Varios.

Youve bought and sold enough vans to follow your gut feelin.

Yes unless you speak to the guy who you arranged delivery with I would hang fire, he said he was delivering it today and didn’t even inform you it wasn’t being delivered.
That’s really rude to start with, you have to ring up and find out what’s going on.

My FWIW thoughts is let it go - wait until you get home.
There will be another one.
I agree . Let it go as you really dont need this stress from a distance
Not so easy though as whilst i do agree with the sentiment of there will be another one they aren't actually that frequent ...at least not the style or price i want to pay. ....which creates the dilemma. The guy i spoke with the other day seemed fine as did the person in the eBay account that was dealing with me before and after the auction end.

I've called back and got the rottweiler again but this time i just kept it simple and asked that she have John call me back today and left my number.

At this time i dont believe he's a scammer or anything im just wary of paying for a vehicle in full and then trusting it to be delivered with all paperwork keys etc

Its a bit awkward a situation i guess as every other vehicle ive bought i paid cash or bank transfer on collection.

But the reason i bought it unseen in the first place was due to the fact that theres not many come up that fit my requirements at the right price etc

Catch 22 .....i just dont personally see how he could lose out accepting half the money now and half on delivery .

Im not even going to be there and its not like my 77 year old mother is going to mug him and steal the keys etc but she can at least take delivery phone me while they are there etc and make sure she has all paperwork keys etc and theres no obvious dents or damage on the bus etc .

Ive left a message for him to phone me so hopefully i can get him to discuss the situation and come to an amicable arrangement

In other news i phoned viamare today

To travel on 14/15 th march from patras to Ancona with the van in closed garage and me and the dogs in a pet cabin is €450 thats with minoan and it departs 6pm and arrives 3.30pm

Superfast in comparison is €642

The camper inclusive discount doesnt work for me as they base it on a 2 person cabin etc

That price is held for about a week to give me time to book etc

Also looked at Eurotunnel and the cheapest i can get booking now for the 20/21st is £128 plus 20 each for dogs
That seems to have gone up a bit as im sure the last time i booked it was £102 plus £18 each for dogs

Im unsure what date to book as its a long way from Ancona to calais and ive to factor in a vet stop on route and a PCR test which ive no idea where you get these done

What a bummer Tam. But my thoughts are the same as every one else. Walk away!
If there arent many about , and not at this price, why weren't more people bidding on it?? why did he let it go so cheaply?
It's not fair of you to put tbe irresponsibility of receiving it on your Mum, she would feel terrible if it turned out to be a wrong un.

Just spoke to john and he's not fussed about paypal fees so thats the only way i can do it.
For some reason he's not keen on me paying half now and half on delivery ...he prefers paypal which as he says is supposed to protect my payment.

Don't get the impression he's in any way up to out just a stubborn hen pecked yorkshireman

He might think he's being scammed -

Tell him to check you out on your thread here

I've bought 2 MH's blind off Ebay (y)
Yes from talking to him i get that impression ....its his daughters ebay account and he's never dealt with eBay before. He says he was happy with cash on collection but he can't keep it till end of march.

I guess paypal is the only option and i have quite a while to raise an item not as described action etc should anything happen during delivery.

I agreed to buy it unseen when i bid and ive no issue with that part ....im just aware that anythjng can happen between me paying for it and it being delivered and its harder to get money back than it is to not have paid it in the first place.

But i guess they have several valuable coaches in their yard should they try to rip me off lol.

I may be wrong, but I thought that Paypal protection doesn't include motor vehicles?

It's all about trust - you can tell a lot by the way a vehicle is described - and contact by email

Last van MOT expired but seller sounded honest - got it home - passed first go - no advisories (y)

Don't you know anyone near it to have a look first, or someone on here, if it's near Stoke , I'll have a look at it.

Yes the guy doesn't sound like he's hiding anything ...to be honest i think hevwas dissapointed at it selling so cheap ...from what he told me its had a lot of money spent on it with invoices etc.

Its quite a big company . LL travel mexborough from google looks quite a large outfit.

Its in mexborough south yorkshire.

Ive paid for it now anyway via PayPal. Certain level of risk but i cant see another option at present.

Would you let your daughter talk to a buyer like she has...? Could be a “chip off the old block” and he may just be calm about it...?

sounds too good to be true and he’s bending over backwards to get rid of it.... 🤔

I don’t think you need the hassle Tam and I’m afraid I’m with others, walk away... once your back and probably lockdown ended you can put a concerted effort in finding the right one for you, wether it’s in uk or Germany ... you know you need to find the right one to do what you want with it for conversion as it’ll probably be a keeper....👍🏼

Didn't they mention the Minoan Club you get 10% discount with that, you can apply online then just need to give Viamare the number. I know its still going just had an email from them.

Tam

OK decision and payment made. When will they deliver? Can you get a pal who knows motors to be at Mum's when it arrives to help her through the handover or maybe pay a local commercial garage to act on your behalf for a couple of chargeable hours, and saying you may use them for servicing. They will know what to check for on the V5c for transfer of registration.

That wasn't his daughter that answered the phone .... possibly his wife or business partner. Both the ebay account holder and him have been pleasant enough ...just the gorilla who answered phone earlier who needs taught manners in dealing with customers.

Its paid for now and being delivered tomorrow apparently.

Nothing in the description etc or the phone call i had with him sounds like hes desperate to get shot of it. My bid was only 100 quid more than the ither bidder who im sure would buy it if i didn't.

Going by other busses on eBay i reckon he hoped for more money for it and is quite happy just to relist it.

Time will tell when im home and see it in the flesh but im still happy with the price etc im just concerned about it being delivered and in the condition it was described as.

If i had been over 50 id have got discounts but us youngsters dont get them

One pov the Vario would need to be pretty bad to not be worth what you paid for it ? Its probably only got a range of absolute gift to fair price :)

I'm sure if when you see it, as you got it for a good price, if you decide it's not quite for you, you'll be able move it on for no loss
Yes thats what i was thinking too.

Yes i know it's hard for folk who haven't been following the market on these vans to know how hard it is to get good ones at good prices etc but that's my reasoning for taking the gamble ..

Panel vans are silly money unless real sheds ....many of the busses will always look like a bus and quite fugly so the theory of always being another one doesn't always work with every vehicle ....there may well be others but not necessarily better .

So its a gamble and ill feel better once its arrived etc but at the minute i still feel it is a good bus for the money.

Just from the conversation i had with him the other day regarding the full merc service history and the recent new tailgate thats only available from mercedes themselves at over £1k i get the impression that apart from the rust here and there on the body that its in pretty good condition and has been maintained.
I know that personally i wouldn't have maintained full dealer history on a 15 year old vehicle id likely have got a local commercial garage to do the work cheaper .....so that alone if correct tells me they dont scrimp on their maintenance. Its one of the things that convinced me to buy it blind.

Hopefully my assumptions are correct 😁

Thats a few examples of the german market ...the uk is even harder

The yellow 2007 is probably the closest to what i wanted but had sliding sude door and rear doors that i didnt want but as you can see its nearly 3 times the price before import costs and only 50k miles less

Makes one wonder why it was so 'cheap'?
Possibly because it was an auction with no reserve and possibly the mileage put some people off.

Most of the others are fixed price or classified adds

I would personally have paid up to 5k for this one because i compared it to what else was available but i know what i can do with it wheras others may have been restricted there.

When you look at the prices for the 3 panel vans currently available in the uk it was a good buy .

But like motorhomes everyone's tastes differ so if someone wanted rear doors etc then this one wouldnt have been as appealing.....i selected this one partly because of the lack of rear doors and the type and position of side door.
Ive a lot of work to do to it but not enough to put me off

Hopefully all the paperwork to back all this up will be with the bus when delivered.
