Suggestions please for visiting England

Funny old world. He is in Scotland where we think the scenery etc is wonderful and he wants to come down to us.

Is it because its still midge season up there?

Anyone wanting to stay in Shrewsbury can I recommend the west mid showground, nice open spot but walking distance to town and reasonable price. Ok don't go for the facilities but still a much better location than the campsites

Its not easy to visit the shropshire hills in a motorhome, so for those without a scooter or car they run a shuttle bus around them at the weekends. You can get the train to Church Stretton from Shrewsbury or Ludlow.

They do take bus passes but maybe give them a donation anyway?

Slightly off beat suggestion - my home county of Kent.

  • Canterbury and the cathedral, buy food for dinner at the Goods Shed.
  • Whitstable - trendy seaside town with great shopping, restaurants & pubs
  • Faversham, Georgian market town with great walks out onto the marshes. Macknade Fine Foods for lunch or provisions.
  • Loads of lovely beaches
  • Weald of Kent, rolling countryside with weatherboarded houses & orchards
  • Some great pubs, especially the micro breweries, first one ever was in Kent.
  • Margate and the Turner gallery, lots of little shops in the old town, eat a posh nosh at Angela’s.
  • Vineyards everywhere, do a tour and a tasting. Cider too.
  • Deal - fishing boats on the beach, lovely old town
  • Walks on the Downs with great views
  • Dungeness - only “desert” in UK, very weird place, make sure to book a trip round the nuclear reactor. Then eat a fish taco from the fisherman’s hut or stay over at the Pilot and have fish and chips.
  • Get to Dungeness on the miniature train from Hythe.
  • Broadstairs, lovely seaside town, harbour, micro pubs, antiques shops, Dickens associations and festival. Folk festival in August.
  • And much more I’ve forgotten.
And if you get fed up, move west into Sussex. It won’t be as good though ;)

I keep meaning to do some of Kent but when I get close to Dover a big magnet switches on..............

This excellent thread has got me thinking...about something that has been suggested before.

We should have a forum section called "Local Knowledge" where locals in an area can add all sorts of interesting information that will help visiting Funsters to their town/county. Sort of tourist board info written by motorhomers for motorhomers.

Well they'll still post the question. How many times have we seen "where shall I go in Italy" in the last week ? I've worn out 2 keyboards typing that answer.

Maybe a button: "Use the &^&^^%$$ search engine you lazy git".

Or if you must "I say old boy, one's forum has a wizzo search engine".

Your first time abroad?

Shropshire without doubt... Craven Arms, Church Stretton, Long Mynd, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Clee Hill, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge... .. my favorite county even though l live in the South West.

Another vote (amongst many I see) for Shropshire with maybe a visit to Warwickshire on way to see Stratford on Avon and Warwick castle.

Jings, that was fast. Thanks all.
(I didn't mention Wales because (a) we've been there quite a lot and (b) I didn't know it was part of England)
rI
it's not part of England it's part of the United Kingdom.
I'm sure Shifty will have something to say about that.
But, yes, North Wales, Peak District both worth the effort.

Actually while on the subject I'm in Italy

Where's nice

Definitely another vote for Shropshire.

Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution with lots of interesting museums and sites of interest to explore.

Stunning countryside with the river Severn running through it and beautiful towns to visit.

Have I sold it to you yet? :)

:D

There's not a whole lot of Italy that's not nice. Good food, good wine and style. What more can you ask. And the language. The Spanish sound like they are spitting at you, the Italians sing an opera every time they open their mouths. "What time is it ?" ( "che ore sono ?" ) and the answer is an aria by Puccini.

You've probably had a sniff at Diano Marina by now. The coast from Portofino to La Spezia has an enviable reputation, you just have to find a way to get the van there, we didn't do too well. I would not miss Florence, climb the Duomo. Pisa, well, it's got a tower. Rome. Horrible capital city, like London but to stand in the Forum or Colosseum and think of who stood there before you, now that's a bit special.

Then there are the lakes on the way home. A special, quieter one, Lago di Caldonazza.

But take care on motorways around Genoa.

We have spent many happy years living in ‘hidden’ Shropshire. It looks as though our secret is out now!

Trouble is, how often do you end up not visiting the things on your doorstep? Especially sites!

I lived just outside Winchester for 9 years, never went to the cathedral once!

But it's still a good idea!
