Stops on A26 France

We stopped at the Aire below, it’s basically just a large car park with black waste. However it’s only 5 minutes walk from a couple of restaurants and cafes plus a lovely lakeside beach, I think it was around October when we stopped and all was open but not sure about February.

When you go makes such a difference. We are on a pleasant aire near the Loire at the moment but the village is shut. It may begin to re emerge in the spring.

We HAD to stop once on an Autoroute aire (pre motorhome) we were moved by the Gendarmes as it was ""TOOO Dangerouse"" and we were corralled under the lighted area near the shop along with 6 others and the Police patrol came round hourly
Apparently there were gangs of thieves targeting the Aires and robbing people when they were asleep

We now use a late train stop at the Auchan at Boulogne then drive next morning ending up between Le Man and Bordeaux using Search for Sites for a top and the French APP for fuel called Essence (loads on English phone as Petrol) give prices and works into Spain too

Thank you for your replies, we are actually looking for a stop just off the toll road halfway between Calais & Beaune. We know there is a good one in the centre of Beaune.

There is a good aire at Ay-Champagne, close to Epernay - about 300kms from Calais. The aire is beside the canal with space for six or seven ‘vans, possibly EHU. Ay-Champagne is a small village with one bistro and a boulangerie; it’s home to one of the grand marque champagne houses (I can’t remember which one). You come off the road through Champfleury (at Reims) where you can stock up at the massive Leclerc and then the next day can trundle back onto the A26 just North of Chalons.

Is that the one where the champagne van comes in on Friday evenings?

The first night in France of your trip - fish, chips and champagne from the van! What more could you want? And, it’s only €2 for the aire.

The champagne house in Ay-Champagne is Billecart Salmond. Maybe not one to wash down the fish and chips. I remember that the entrance was so posh that we were too intimidated to go in for a look around.

We’ve stopped in Beaune and thought it was well placed for a walk round the city and supermarket next door, the Aire is the basic car park type but would still recommend it.

Bollinger are also in Ay I recall. Had a great private tour with my daughter who was trying to be a sommelier and was sent there by her boss!
