Stoke- on- trent dwellers.

Ah, the Potteries. Goldenhill, more pubs per mile than anywhere else in the country. Clay enders coming out of the pot banks looking like Homepride flour graders. Up Hanley for the monkey run. Oatcakes sold out of a sash window, straight onto the pavement. Potters fortnight, when you could buy the Sentinel and oatcakes in Rhyl, Talacre or Prestatyn delivered daily. Shelton bar steelworks, lighting up the night sky. Colliers changing shifts in the North Staffs coalfield. Two bed terraced houses at £250 each. All in my lifetime, but never to be seen again.

Leek was the most pubs per square mile in the potteries.
And you missed Towyn off the list of potters holiday resorts.
I was born and bred in the shadow of Chatterley Whitfield and still live overlooking the slag heaps and chimney.

I used to play in the abandoned buildings in the early 80's

Just love Towyn but had to leave last Monday due to corona virus.
Great memories of riding up and down Rhyl front by the Schooner pub with mates on our motorbikes in the 60s.

Is that near where the Black Bull pub was in Brindley Ford.

This is just lovely. Pleased people that people can reminisce. I'm from Cheddleton and lived near the mental assylum which in itself is a tremendous building and great to read about. No comments needed on the mental hospital. However, there were still patients free roaming. The hospital had a dance hall -cinema nights the cricket pavilion and patients at low lever risk helped maintain the grounds. My love for pubs must be because i went out nightly in Leek. Eek! I know love in Deal Kent and this place had nearly the same amount of boozers. Not a purposeful trend I promise.

First time I went to the big campsite at Talacre beach was during the Potters fortnight with the parents of my then girlfriend. There were aeroplane fuselages, garden sheds, old busses, nisan huts and all manner of things turned into holiday homes. A bit different now I hear.

Do you mean the Victoria Colliery as some called it The Bull.

Thats the one, just up the road from Cowlishaw Walkers.

St Edward's or Rampton is now housing estates

St Edward's. It sure is. Redrow housing. My parents still in the doctors houses at the back. It's still beautifully kept. Gone are my days roller skating through a hospital. If the village had a black out ...we never did because the generators would kick in for the hospital. So some benefit.

One of my earliest holiday memories was going to Palins just over the bridge in Towyn in potters fortnight.
It was like being at home.
Everyone from the Knave of Clubs and the British Legion club were there along with the natives from the Sperling and a few pubs from Smallthorne bank were there.
Happy times.

Yes Cowlishaw Walker manufactured underground machinery which I worked on as I was a fitter down the pit for 5 years, before I left to work in the gas industry.

I know it well. Worked at the Travellers Rest and the newsagents washed cars at the garage and worked also at Brittania. While in 6th form. Not on the posh side though, Kate. Most taken over by Capita now. Was the COOP for a short while. ?
