Staycation. What to expect.

So are you saying lorry drivers have just got to work for low wages to keep you happy ?
God, how I wish I was young and fit enough to go out at night to drive an air conditioned automatic vehicle, and get £10 an hour for the privilege, drive somewhere ,drop a trailer , pick another one up and go back again.
Some of the old time drivers must be turning in their grave.

Try 30k for a 3 to 4 shift working week. Starting Saturday 0300h finish Monday or early Tuesday. Just 4 applicants.

I have absolutely no wish to eat (or drink) anywhere that price is promoted as their selling point e.g. Grubbyspoons, nor any establishments offering '2 For 1' or 'All you can eat' deals, nor any of the fast food troughs which will throw a 'Kentucky Bucket' of fat and salt at you for a couple of quid because I know that the food will be rubbish and the staff untrained and underpaid.
If wetherspoons was consistently "grubbyspoons" it wouldn't be in business long 🤔 unless you think you have higher standards than everyone else.
I installed new coldrooms in the Leicester one and the kitchen is no different to any other decent pub kitchen.

McDonald's & Burger King pride themselves on consistency of product, they have modern clean kitchens (I've worked in them) and the worldwide good reputation speaks for itself.

We had an early 8.30am breakfast yesterday at the Weatherspoon’s on the M40 at Beaconsfield. Bacon roll with toast and marmalade, a couple of coffees all in pleasant surroundings and nice chatty staff. Just turn up and sit down. All at a price similar to home cooking. Well done Mr Timothy Randall Martin yours is a great product…… (y)

I’ve been retired four years and on over double that each day whilst working, wouldn’t have turned out for that.
By the way that was based on 365 days in the year, actually worked only approx 150 so equates to £500 per day.
And then add on the overtime !

I used to get more than that before the influx of cheaper drivers. They even used to pay o/t at the weekend then.

Now now, you cant go promoting businesses , be they world wide with tens of thousands of outlets , or UK based with a mere 1000 or so outlets. Clearly they are abject failures at what they do , with no clue as to customer needs or wants..

Times change, when I started in engineering it was always 1.5x for Saturday and 2x pay for Sunday, Felixstowe Dock went even higher if you worked after 01.00 Sunday morning.
I left in 88 and a year or two later they went to continental shifts, 7 day 24 hour working, all overtime rates gone.

Yes time do change, but also helped by the fact that they have access to cheaper people to fill in if the others don’t accept it. The balance of power swung dramatically the other way. Personally I am a down the middle more not dramatically to one side.

I doubt that my hygiene expectations are higher than others' but I eat out only every 5 or 6 weeks for social/gastronomic pleasure and not because I'm hungry.

My only experience of those chains/groups has been as a customer. Perhaps I should ask to have a table in their kitchens. ;)

Exactly, but they get away with it nevertheless, just like Hermes couriers, the DVLA and motorhome manufacturers. ;) ;)

(Maybe I've been unlucky).

I have just come back from Yorkshire where there are al lot of of tenant farmers who run sheep and store.cattle on small farmsThey do not make a fortune and are more likely to drive an old Landie or a ratty old pick up. Not all farmers are wealthy and those that have relied in eastern European labour in the past are still not attracting British workers at significantly higher wages. Brits simply too soft or too idle to do the work. So the wages will escalate, there will still be insufficient workers and food will continue to rot in the fields. Then there is the logistics problem of theHGV driver shortage, with supermarkets already experiencing shortages of perishable goods. So yes, employers can offer more wages but that will flow through to higher prices in the hospitality and food sector, so don"t complain about limited service or higher prices, and an increase inflation, because that is the consequence of our world post Brexit and covid and it will not be improving any time soon.

That's simply not true (especially the too soft or idle part). My wife was part of a gang of local women that used to be employed full time, picking cherries, apples, pears, asparagus etc. when in season, and pruning and packing etc. in the winter months, until the influx of cheap Eastern European economic migrants.
My wife and the rest of the full timers were laid off, and foreigners paid part of their wages to live in shoddy static caravans while doing the same jobs.
My wife and all of the rest of the team still work full time in different jobs.
British farmers got greedy, so serve them right if there's not enough cheap foreign labour to go round, they made their beds.

So why are they not attracting British pickers now the wages they are offering are higher?

We know a potato farmer who advertises his vacancies at the job centre. His experience is that is a British youngster starts he thinks he's done well if they are still there two hours later at tea break.
We have just advertised where I work. CVs coming in with no work for two years. Ring to offer an interview...no answer. If they do answer and you offer an interview 4 out of 5 fail to turn up for it

They are given too much, so why bother earning it?.
I had sod all so worked in the summer bailing, hard work and I got about £7 a day. Was early 80s

Suppose I was an exploited school boy 😏 didn't do me any harm. I saved it up and bought a ZX spectrum.

We stayed in early June at the Haven 'Beach Resort' in the Lake District. We managed to get just one 'drinking slot' in the whole week we were there, but this was at kiddy time when the costumed monkeys were on the stage miming to the American soundtrack! Couldn't get a meal at any time. Good job too as I found a receipt from the take away chippy on the loo floor and decided against it!
Two cod £14.00
One Lg chips £7.00
Gravy £1.00
Curry sauce £1.00
Two cokes £2.00

Total £25.00 !!!

BTW why would anyone put curry sauce or gravy on fish and chips?

I have two grandsons, one 7 and one 15, £10 to cut my grass, not interested its about 20x20 takes me 15mins.
Your right they don't have the work ethic, I had a paperround and did anything to earn money, neither my younger or older brother did. Work ethic is something you are born with I believe.

Does not suprise me. Used to run a very large call centre. Brit kids were flaky, frequently lazy and entitled. Always having personal dramas which precluded them turning up for work. We had some Eastern European young people working there and they were hard working, obliging and mature. They wanted to work, wanted to earn their money and were a delight to employ.
