Staycation. What to expect.

Furlough isn't an employee option. If the establishment invite you off furlough and you refuse its a resignation. Employees do not have the option to stay on furlough until September.

I have absolutely no wish to eat (or drink) anywhere that price is promoted as their selling point e.g. Grubbyspoons, nor any establishments offering '2 For 1' or 'All you can eat' deals, nor any of the fast food troughs which will throw a 'Kentucky Bucket' of fat and salt at you for a couple of quid because I know that the food will be rubbish and the staff untrained and underpaid.

Delete the app that pings?
I haven't even got the app, I just take a photo of the qr code and delete when I'm sitting down. Not been asked to prove myself yet.
There ain't no way I'm queuing to get in a wetherspoons though, I'd rather sit indoors and drink cheap beer.

£100 a night, no handball, nice if you can get it.
How is that £100 a night. Everyone else does an 8 hr shift so it would be £72. Iif it was 12 hrs deduct break min 45 mins yes £101 less tax under £80

The hours said 10 a night at £12 an hour that would be £120 according to my reckoning, take a bit off for breaks would leave £100
Btw more than I ever made in a week.

No £9 an hour. More than you ever made in a week, haha. And they gave you all those tractors and Ian built your extension for nothing, I get it

I’ve been retired four years and on over double that each day whilst working, wouldn’t have turned out for that.

I usually eat out for social and gastronomic pleasure, not because I'm hungry.
I've been twice to a Grubbyspoons. Once inadvertently as I'd booked into The Three Tuns hotel at Thirsk on a motorbiking 'Herriot Country' tour without realising who owned it. I wanted to stay there as Herriot used to hang around in there for the farmers to pay their vet bills. The tables were dirty, the bored staff spent more time looking at their phones than being aware of the customers, the food that was microwaved was soggy and/or tasteless and that which was grilled was either dried out, burnt or semi-raw. A group of six tanked up rowdy boozers aged 20 to 30 were barging about around the eating tables with every other word an obscenity. Obviously attracted by the cheap booze.
The second time I took a terminally ill friend out for the day. She insisted on going to a 'Spoons to buy me their 'Two for One' lunch offer. She enjoyed it.
I've been in a McD's once, on a tour with biker pals just to get a break from the torrential rain and to use the loos. I'd only go again for the same reasons.

Yeah but I am on £125 a week now on state pension (y) :winky:

Seriously I am on more per week than I ever was working, and you get people complaining about the pension.

Yes I know black cab drivers only earn £80 a week so I guess you’re the same

A correction was on the cards for the casual dining sector before COVID. Too many chains and over supply.

Also Staycation is when you stay at HOME, otherwise it’s a UK holiday!

they keep saying theres a shortage of hgv drivers which isnt true theres only a shortage of those willing to work for the wages they are offering
advetise hgv drivers £30 an hour and prepare for the ques

the public wary of health risks or the “faff” of waring a mask to get to a table.
Normal here until food or drink arrives
bluetooth on the phones that are registered

Only time Bluetooth is turned on on mine is when travelling insane and synced to radio.
A bit rich for me
&me
Well if the income of the poorest goes up I'm all for it. T
That would be state pensioners with no other income then?

And stop them making drivers sign up for any 5 out of 7 working days so they don’t have to pay overtime for the weekend

Price either high or low is no indication of good or bad food. On our recent trip it was exactly the opposite - fish & chip takeaway was easily the best. The best burger I ate was in Burger King in the services on the M40 on the way home from North Wales - both of those were considerably cheaper than so called restaurants. The biggest problem at the moment is the lack of consistency of food eating out - eat in a restaurant one day and the food can be well cooked and appetising - go the next day and the whole experience has collapsed into what then becomes an unpleasant and therefore expensive disaster. To be honest I cannot give two hoots if these badly managed establishments fail - they be doing our stomachs and pockets a favour.

The last few months we've made a lot of trips around the uk. One of the things we've noticed is the number of pubs not opening and also those that do are suffering from staff shortages. Some are even closing at 9pm. Restaurants the same. It would appear that staff in the hospitality sector may have chosen an alternative career. Some furloughed staff may also be remaining on furlough until mid September. European staff may also have returned to their home countries. Also menus tend to be extremely basic and a little overpriced. Not everyone will be affected by this but I just thought i'd put it out there.
We’ve just had a walk around Kendal this afternoon/evening and very little open. Few pubs/restaurants but mainly takeaway.

Speaking to a friend who runs a cafe with his wife they are having problems getting staff, he thinks that quite a few are happy on furlough as they are receiving enough money and lots of others have found alternative employment doing something different, recently talking to a girl who has worked at a hotel we regularly go to for meals, she has left to join the prison service, nearly all the staff there have left whilst they have been shut.
Folks running cafes/restaurants/bars etc are having to face up to paying more if they want to attract staff now, all part of Boris’ grand new world. I’ve no problem with it, just seems to be taking a little time for the Tim Martin’s if this world to get their ahead around what it is they were championing!

Well they have had a good run of cheap labour, now they will have to pay a bit more and maybe not get a new Range Rover this year
I have just come back from Yorkshire where there are al lot of of tenant farmers who run sheep and store.cattle on small farmsThey do not make a fortune and are more likely to drive an old Landie or a ratty old pick up. Not all farmers are wealthy and those that have relied in eastern European labour in the past are still not attracting British workers at significantly higher wages. Brits simply too soft or too idle to do the work. So the wages will escalate, there will still be insufficient workers and food will continue to rot in the fields. Then there is the logistics problem of theHGV driver shortage, with supermarkets already experiencing shortages of perishable goods. So yes, employers can offer more wages but that will flow through to higher prices in the hospitality and food sector, so don"t complain about limited service or higher prices, and an increase inflation, because that is the consequence of our world post Brexit and covid and it will not be improving any time soon.

The thing is I’m not missing it !
We’ve not missed it at home but when we can get away, likes of now the spontaneity of being out for a walk, passing a nice pub or cafe where ordinarily you’d decide let’s stop for a beer/meal/tea&cake is gone when the first thing your asked is gave you booked…no…sorry….bookings only ☹️
On BBC South News last week the owner of several hotels and pubs said that due to the difficulty in getting staff he pays £100 to an existing staff member if they introduce a new member and another £100 after they've worked for 6 weeks.
It'll no doubt improve when furlough has finished.
Why, because those businesses retaining staff on furlough will immediately pay them off? The whole idea behind furlough is to help businesses continue, if they all go t@ts up when furlough stops what another government success that’ll have been ☹️

So are you saying lorry drivers have just got to work for low wages to keep you happy ?

Disgraceful wages for a qualified driver. No wonder there’s a shortage.

No , that is clearly not what I said. We have a dearth of HGV drivers, many of those that remain are older and will retire over the next decade. We used to have a great many European drivers who are now no longer working in this country. Logistics companies are offering more money but still can't get drivers, saying that young people dont dont want to do the work .This shortage will put upward pressure on wages which will filter through into higher costs for the consumer. This thread was reflecting people's discontent with higher prices in pubs and restaurants.
There, understand now?

Too much Boris Bashing for me in your contribution…wrong forum, and nothing to do with the OP

Best experience on our trips...West Runton. The village pub only did a limited menu and only at weekends, most nights it closed around 9pm. Went to local Social Club. The Pepperpot restaurant next door were only doing takeaways. What you could do was order from The Pepperpot and they would deliver to the Social Club who set the table for you and put the food on hot plates. Beautiful food. Ok a little more expensive than the hamburgers offered by the pub but as the club beer was £1.50 a pint cheaper you could easily make the difference up. Great arrangement.
