The last few months we've made a lot of trips around the uk. One of the things we've noticed is the number of pubs not opening and also those that do are suffering from staff shortages. Some are even closing at 9pm. Restaurants the same. It would appear that staff in the hospitality sector may have chosen an alternative career. Some furloughed staff may also be remaining on furlough until mid September. European staff may also have returned to their home countries. Also menus tend to be extremely basic and a little overpriced. Not everyone will be affected by this but I just thought i'd put it out there.

Can't say I have seen much evidence of this around here, every time a shop or other business closes, we have another Indian, coffee shop, weatherspoons, or some other eating or drinking establishment opening up.
Can't move for them, either eating places or charity shops is about all we have.

Speaking to a friend who runs a cafe with his wife they are having problems getting staff, he thinks that quite a few are happy on furlough as they are receiving enough money and lots of others have found alternative employment doing something different, recently talking to a girl who has worked at a hotel we regularly go to for meals, she has left to join the prison service, nearly all the staff there have left whilst they have been shut.

Its a lot more difficult to eat out now, can be harder to get in takes a lot longer to get served and you run the risk of being pinged and having to isolate.

Has me wondering how on earth young people are supposed to meet now? I'm hoping its not all internet from now on.

Exactly our findings in a recent North Wales trip. It as if they can't be bothered. I think furlough and government handouts needs to end sooner rather than later.

Not been in my local for 15 months, don’t want to book tables in a pub, I’ll wait until you can just walk in as normal, don’t have to register, don’t have to wear a mask, can go to the bar and get a drink and just act as normal, think it will be a long time yet.
Don’t mind booking in a restaurant and wearing a mask till seated but not in a pub !!

I went to Miller and Carter near me the other day and its normally good but the service was rubbish most of the staff seemed to be new so didn't really know what they doing and it did seem bloody expensive to what it was pre lock down

Gree with you entirely on this. May local is now only open outside and wine served in plastic glasses. Ordered a 175ml wine, took the glass home and it measured 150 ml but still charging the same price!
menu limited to about 4 different burgers.

Drove to Manchester at the weekend in the camper to see our youngest and sil, we all went to a restaurant on Saturday with all outside seating, Sunday came home, Tuesday the four of us get pinged, 7 day isolation.

Buy an old phone which can not be pinged

Had the staycation March to late June 2020, then holidayed at UK campsites when that was possible.

After the winter lockdown staycation, back to UK campsites. Just prepping to leave the Dagnall CL as I write this.

Staycation is when you stay at home - to decorate or just relax.

Pubs and restaurants will be many months away from normality. A reluctance to return by staff now employed elsewhere and a fair amount of the public wary of health risks or the “faff” of waring a mask to get to a table.

I always said that Ipswich is where the money is, I don’t know anybody else who can afford to go out in Manchester. Haha

Delete the app that pings?
My daughter did that and then reloaded the app, nolonger says to isolate, I didn't agree with that, and we won't do it with ours.
An old phone is no good as security made sure you scanned the NHS code as you entered the restaurant, no scan no going in.

Sorry I might be a bit old fashioned here but I am generally law abiding and believe that I have a responsibility to protect others from things I might do. The app said isolate, I have no idea if we were infectious and haven both taken two Lateral flow tests saying negative so its likely we aren't, but we will keep ourselves to ourselves till Wednesday to negate any chance of infecting others.

£120 4 pizza type meals, two bottles of wine and half cider, people were queueing to get in.

What's this pinging?
nhs covid app on your phone, tells you if you have been near an infected person and if you should isolate. lots of fors and againsts, including certain people reporting they are infected when they arent to get bars, pubs, places and people to be shut down/self isolate etc.

A week away from our two week staycation in Lincoln and Whitby. What happens if we are pinged by an NHS app the day before we leave? I am retired but my wife is working and taking holiday for the two weeks, would she get Covid Statuary Sick Pay for those two weeks?
Beginning to understand why folk do not use the app and give fake data at venue sigh in. It's not nice but human nature is what it is.

My thoughts too - but I suspect we could be waiting a long time.

We visited a Toby carvery yesterday and not a good experience with food no where near as good as usual the place had no atmosphere with no set tables and only a couple of diners.
Would rather cook my own as I then have a much better choice especially fish as most eateries give little or no choice of fish dishes.
When furlough finishes I’m sure those having a holiday will come out of the woodwork.

On BBC South News last week the owner of several hotels and pubs said that due to the difficulty in getting staff he pays £100 to an existing staff member if they introduce a new member and another £100 after they've worked for 6 weeks.
It'll no doubt improve when furlough has finished.
